A.G. Russell Hunter, Gunstock, Sowbelly Trapper

Today I rounded the spines on my Sowbelly, much more comfortable to hold in a tight grip for hard cutting now :)

Was easy and quick on the belt grinder with a slack belt. 80, 120 then 400 grit.

I'm never shy to modify a knife I know that I will likely have for ever. Love this knife.

Very nice work. One of those things that can make all the difference on an oft-used knife or tool.

My cocobolo gunstock jack from A. G. Russell arrived yesterday. Very quick shipping I thought.
I love this knife! The fit and finish are superb. The action is very smooth and the blade locks up in the open position like a vault door. Not a whiff of motion detected. Beautiful grain to the handles.
Everything about this knife says quality. I am much impressed. I've never bought an imported pocketknife before.
Now, I'm looking at that sowbelly trapper.

They are really nice looking knives - both the Gunstock & Hunter rucarta models will be added to my list of gets.

great mod, came out reeeally good if you ask me
I like the way you modded the clip, only the part that rises from the handles, you seem to know how to use a grinder
I need to get one too..damn!

Thanks Maxx, makes it a bit nicer to use :) The clip blade only needed it to there as you mentioned, I didn't want to do any more than needed on a nice knife, it makes me a little nervous!

I only got the grinder last year but am learning, there was a bit of luck to get it so neat, I'm not a natural that's for sure. I did make a blade yestersay for practice, will sart a thread soon!

Steve.

This thread really helped sell me on these.

I ordered a sowbelly and a gunstock, both in brown rucarta.
(Kinda wanted the yellow delrin on the gunstock but didn't feel like waiting for it to be back in stock)

I got my sowbelly and gunstock today. I am VERY impressed with the high quality. I have to look VERY hard to spot even the tinyest of tiny imperfections. Outstanding work, even the insides gleam. Between these and Spyderco's Byrd line i think it's time for everyone to stop turning up their nose at Chinese manufacturing.

I'm also surpsised by how much i like the gunstock. The ergonomics are very impressive. Despite the complete lack of a finger choil, thumb ramp or jimping it feels very secure in the hand. I think it has a lot to offer even to people who aren't into traditional. Other than the lack of a pocket clip i think anyone who carries a modern style folder could easily transition to this without a hitch. Heck it's even easily openable with one hand.

For those of you who wish to debate the merits of USA production vs. overseas (Chinese) production, you may find the posts which have been moved here.

That Texas Ranger knife is massive and gorgeous. That and the gunstock are really speaking to me.

I always like a clip too but didn't want to modify my Sowbelly permanently like that, at least not yet, so I cut and bent a small bit of Ti so I can hang the knife inside my pocket. Been EDCing for about a week, works even better than I had hoped:

I bought the AGR 2008 Texas Ranger Gunstock when it first came out and was very impressed with the knife and it's top quality sheath. When the 2009 Texas Ranger Large Folding Hunter appeared i could not resist knowing it would be of the same very high quality as the Gunstock. Recently i saw the 2 blade Sowbelly Trapper posted here in BF, and it's such a great looking folder with 2 superb blades, that i had to get one. Then a few weeks ago the 2010 Texas Ranger Large Sunfish became available and of course i really needed that one too.
So here there are, my 4 Big Boys: First in their sheaths, which you need for knives of this size.

These are big in every way. Lengths: Gunstock 4 1/4", Large Folding Hunter 5 5/8", Large Sunfish 4 5/8", and Sowbelly Trapper 4 1/4"

These are hefty solid knives as you can see from the thickness of the blade stock.

And open and Impressive.

I just realized that my Folding Hunter does not have a lanyard while the other 3 do. I'm not sure if this was an AGR oversight or if this one is a do-it-yourself lanyard.
I know all these appear numerous times in this thread but i just wanted to show them off because i really am so impressed with all four.
As an EDC, the 2008 Gunstock is hard to beat and it is such a pleasure to use.
I wonder what the 2011 Texas Ranger will be ? It must be quite a challenge to come up with another pattern as impressive as these.

Quote AGR "The working name is: Toothpick, Sub-hilt, Borong Blade. Does that give you a picture? "
No ! But i'm in. The "Sub-hilt" makes me think of a fixed blade. And i need to look up "Borong Blade". Certainly it will be unique and not a copy of any knife that i have, or likely have ever seen.
Any hints as to when it might be available ?

It was supposed to be in February, a month or so ago. I am hopeing for photo samples in two or three months. This will be the first Texas Ranger that is slipjoint rather than lockback.

JUst ordered me up a sowbelly Wanted the yellow derlin but they only had the coccbolo in stock. Stated it would be about a month before the yellow derlin came in.

Hope it gets here soon, pictures look great

Roland, on your last picture all of the knives (but especially the dogleg) look like the blades are too big to go in the frames! Talk about efficient use of space!?! I can hardly imagine a better rough usage knife than that dogleg in rucarta. Nice comparison shots, and thanks.

Got the Large Hunter in yellow for my birthday.

First thought: Crap, this thing is HUGE. I carry a standard 5 1/4" folding hunter fairly often, but there's something about this one that makes it feel much larger than the 3/8" would indicate.

Wish I'd grabbed a sheath for it, but maybe I can whip one up out of some leather I've around.
