A.G.Russell traditional folders - how are they?

Bob,
Nice knife! I can appreciate the feeling of being overwhelmed by the prices of the TCs and the rate at which they disappear.

Where in the handle do they hide this coil spring? Back around the lanyard hole or up between the bolsters?

Hi Mort, I think the coil spring must be near the lanyard hole in the rear. The spine ("backspacing") works just like the one on the Spyderco Delica. While the blade is opening, the rear part of the spine gets depressed, and then pops up when the blade is fully open.

Bob,
Thanks for the info!

Classy-looking knife John

Almost pulled the trigger on the Rancher in Rosewood just now but it's out of stock. :(

I've been an A. G. Russell customer for many years and have nothing but good experiences to report. The knives that I've purchased, under his label, have been in every way as well made as any of the regulars we see here everyday. ie Case, GEC, Queen, Canal Street etc. A.G.'s customer service is excellent and is surpassed by no one.

I've had my eye on a pinched peanut for ever. I need to just do it. All the pics and reports I've seen on that little knife have been glowing. Really nice looking and well photographed, John.

I have the chinese made Medium Gunstock lock back, and it has considerable blade play in every direction. It just sits in the drawer collecting dust. I did own a Rancher at one time and that was a decent knife.

I've never been let down by AGR. I've been a fan since 1990, or so. I grew up in NW Arkansas, and always made a point of stopping by his shop whenever I could. My oldest 2 knives were purchased directly from his shop, one from him, and another from his wife. I currently own more AGR knives than any other brand but KAI, and I've purchased a good number of those KAI offerings from either his online store, through a catalogue, or directly from the shop.

I currently rotate for EDC: the Cowboy in black, the Super Beak hawkbill, the A. G. Russell Gent's Linerlock in Titanium and Burlwood, and an old Damascus lockback with burl and NS handles. I keep a Woodswalker fixed blade at my desk at work, as well.

I recently brought in my Gent's linerlock to show off, and brag on, and A. G. checked it out, and took it upon himself to add a bit of oil to the joint to smooth out the action.

I'd let him know. I bet he can make it right.no knife manufacturer makes a perfect product. But I have seen AG Russell make people happy when problems arise. He has a great attitude about his profession (dare I say "calling".)

This is an A.G. Russell I'd like to get ahold of, the Premium Scout. Hard to find, it seems. I don't think they've made them for several years.

That premium scout is sweet - I tried to fine one but failed. The seem to show from time to time but they definitely are rare birds.

And yes AGR knives sell out fast - I was drooling over that wooly mammoth Peanut and now it is sold out.

The title says it all. I have browsed the knives that A.G.Russell makes and found a few very interesting ones - in particular the Pinched Peanut looks like a lovely little knife for EDC with exactly the blades I would like to have. Steel is VG-10 which with proper HT is a very good steel. Since the price is somewhat more than a comparably sized GEC (or similar would cost) - I would like to ask - how is the quality of these knives?

thank you

I have looked at a variety of AGR slipjoints in his shop. The ones made in Japan are the best. Often they are made by Moki. However, he usually advertises it when made by them. In my opinion, I like AGR designs better than GEC. The fact he uses a premium steel, that is stainless and GEC does not, puts AGR above GEC as well. The better design and steel makes them worth more than GEC. Their handle material is top notch as well, particularly on the Japanese made knives.

If you get it and don't like it, he's real easy on returns. No restocking fee and you can get your money back, unlike some GEC dealers. That type of service costs a little more as well but is worth it if you are picky.

In a thread about 3 years ago I told A.G. that a pinched peanut at 3.75" closed length would be about the ideal jackknife for me, and he said there was some thought to making one, but haven't heard anything else about it since then.

I attended a gun show recently and stumbled on this: new in box with tissue. Did a little negotiating and walked out with it. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1446600222.620268.jpg

I have a half dozen or so AG Russell knives - all have impressive fit, finish and action. His knives are, quite frankly, the only "Chinese " knives I'll purchase.

One feature I really like is an internal stop pin that prevents the blade from hitting the back spring when snapping closed. Absolutely brilliant! I have a Cowboy and a Folding Hunter with this feature, although I'm sure it's on other patterns as well. It's this kind of innovation, along with AG's quality and excellent customer service, that makes me want to buy more.
