A.G. Russell's Sowbelly in single blade versions

I like the look of the wharncliff version but aren't these the ones that weight a ton? Also I just won a AG Russell White Wharncliff in General Discussion so I should know soon if I like there knives. I have never own one but have always liked the style.

I hope you come back to this thread and post your thoughts on the knife. I bunch of folks seem to have them, but no one seems to use them.

I am still interested in the knife's practical aspect since I am not a collector.

The single blade versions of the sowbelly are lighter than the original two blade. The curved regular jack you won is a different frame and lighter than any of the sowbelly models.

Single blade sowbelly........4.2 oz.
Two blade sowbelly..........5.7 oz.
Curved regular jack..........2.9 oz.

I had one of the two-blade versions, and the looks, value and workmanship were excellent, but it was a bit too large and hefty for my needs. I also couldn't get past the feel of always having a protuberant closed blade under my fingers when using the other blade, but that's certainly not unique to this pattern, and the new versions solve the "problem." If I was in the market for a big, solidly-built single-blade slipjoint, I'd definitely consider one of these.

Ok thanks for the info.

Never heard back from Mr. Russell. And again, it was a knife that most people wouldn't blink twice at. I expected a lot and was disappointed. But I got my refund. Out some shipping. Don't think I'd buy a knife from A.G. Russell again. Rather buy an old knife on which no corners were cut.

That said, if you're not as anal as me, heck of a nice knife. For the money? Like I said, I'd look elsewhere. Neat design though...I really wanted to like it. Oh well.

LK,

Please send me an email with your name and address so that I can trace the knife that disappointed you. Many thanks, A. G.

Dan,

When I looked at the knife I could not find the problems that had upset you. From the things you had said I saw no point in discussing it. I doubted you would order again but left your account open so that you could.

If I could remember your name and address I would now mark you a Do Not Mail and not waste anymore money on catalogs.

all the best,

A. G.

I own a few Chinese-made AG Russell folders- the Beak, the large lockback and the large locking gunstock, they are all very well-made, especially for the price. I don't have the sowbelly though, it's a bit large for my taste in slipjoints. If it's anything like the others I do have (and I'm sure it is), it should be overbuilt- very beefy and tough, and well finished. The edge holding for the 8Cr13MoV steel is good, and it seems quite tough and shock-resistant. Similar to well heat-treated AUS-8, as others have noted in the past. The construction is solid, these knives seem made to last. The bolsters do seem soft, and will scratch and ding easily, but this isn't a big deal on a user knife.

I have the Cowboy (the large sodbuster pattern), and It is a solid knife for the money. The finish was better than knives costing 3-4 times as much.

Enough so, that I am planning on buying more (both of the large and small sodbuster style), and the other designs.

Gotta say, I'm a little surprised at your reaction. I said the problems were superficial. Small gap where epoxy showed through. Heck, I complimented the knife. It just wasn't up to what I was expecting based on what I read here - no doubt it is a fine knife for the price. I think I made it clear that I am anal about knives and that there was nothing "wrong" with it. Your return policy is clear. The knife was sent back to you unused, practically untouched...perfectly re-sellable. So, you lost nothing. I paid for the shipping both ways, so the only one who lost anything on this deal was me. But I'll save you some money on catalogues, too. Until I read this, I might very well have ordered from you again.

Check your PM's for my address.

Take care and good luck,

Dan

You said "Don't think I'd buy a knife from A.G. Russell again. Rather buy an old knife on which no corners were cut.
" to every one on Blade forums, I thought you meant what you said. Why would that surprise you?

Thanks for trying us.

Love mine. I think the spring should be a little stronger is all.

Gents,
Any further discussion between two of you of one particular knife should be taken to PM or email.

I have the two blade version and love it...I rounded the edges of the blade spines and it softened up the "feel" a bit, but with both blades open I REALLY like the feel...I have been holding off getting the single Warnie...but this thread I goading me on a bit :D I have carried mine pretty much exclusively in a Buck 112 sheath which fits it like a glove. When pocket carrying I don't find it uncomfortable, but I often carry a 112 in pocket, so take that with a grain of salt.

Just an update here. I am assuming this is allowed since it is not about the issue we were discussing before. I did indeed exchange emails with A.G. We were both reading each other wrong and we both apologized for any confusion. A.G. was a gentleman as I would have expected. So, we cleared the air and I felt good about it. As I have said, the knife I returned was very nice, it just had one minor flaw that a non knife freak would never notice in a million years. Slight line of epoxy between yellow scale and bolster.

Today, the doorbell rings and there is the postman. I'm not expecting any packages. Well, wouldn't you know, a brand new knife in cocobolo. Gorgeous. Fit and finish perfect. I am going to email A.G., and I debated writing this - I don't want anyone to take advantage, but that's not really anyone's style here - suffice to say, A.G. not only sells a heck of a nice knife, but he is a heck of a nice guy and a good businessman to boot.
