Here's one he took flying past Mt. Fuji on the way to bomb a aircraft factory. Check out the 20mm cannon sticking out of the tail of the nearest B-29.

I apologize! And I totally misread that! I thought he was saying the book in his picture was Civil War Era! Fresh outta literature. Will be patient😊

20mm. Had to look that one up. Wow! I thought they used 50 cals. I'll admit I know a bit more about the European planes like the B-17, B-24, or B-25. Hell of a picture right there.

20mm was only used in the tail. The rest of the guns were .50's. Grandpa was the central fire control gunner, he remotely controlled the two topside gun turrets, bringing to bear both on one target, for a total of 4, .50 cal guns.

He meant used in Europe. Here's the two top turrets with the 4 , .50 cal.

Exactly. My understanding is that the B-29 was never used in the European Theater, it came out too late. B-17s and B-24s where the big bombers used there. All of their guns and most guns used on all planes in Europe were 50 cal. Couple exceptions like the P-38 I think.

They needed the long range of the B-29 to reach Japan. A mission took 19 hours. Grandpa flew on 35. When they fire bombed Tokyo they were one of the last planes over the already burning city. The up draft from the fire at 10,000 feet, caused the plane to shoot up another mile, nearly crashing the plane.

Yes. There were no other bombers that could do it. Here is a print that has been in the family for a while. It is of the Doolittle raiders. B-25s off the deck of a carrier to reach Tokyo.

I know it wasn't requested but since we're on Naval Aircraft then here's a picture of a 20mm shell that was fired from a M61A1 from an F/A-18C next to a 40 cal. for size.

This last page or so has been awesome!

My Grandpa was in the military, but he never spoke about it. My entire family has no idea what he did, where he served, etc.. We just have a couple pictures that show him standing with what is obviously a military platoon.

We all wish we knew more about my Grandpa before he passed, but something tells us that he never wanted to relive the things he saw. He was one cold SOB, but he taught me a whole lot about life.
