A GEC passaround for you to get acquainted

Absolutely Morrow, thanks for linking the rules for everyone to read.

I just did a price check on usps.com and to ship in a small flat rate box with 500 insurance is $13.95

rockgolfer,
That's a deal at twice the price.
I wish I'd had this opportunity with so many knives in the past. It's hard to stay afloat with the buy and try routine.

I would really like to have the last person on the list send the knives back to me so that I can resharpen them and then forward them on to you.
Your call of course but I would really like to return them to you all set for service.

Knives arrived today and they've multiplied. Seven total now. First impression: The Boker "wire" ? knife....never seen one....interesting slip joint of sorts. The Farm and Fields will not get lost with the bright orange handles. The congress is cool....I've never messed with them in the past but I think this'll be the first I carry and use. The Viper is a must have for me. It's right up my alley. Single blade, thin w/ a med length. The two three bladers are thick and I like the blade set up on the shorter of the two, with the bone handle.

Let the coon fingerin, begin!

The congress has been carried and used for two days. 1) The handle feels very good in my hand. 2) I really like the main blade-It's got a nice length and is super sharp. 3) The secondary blade covers much of the main blade's long nail nick but with some coon fingering I can get it opened! 4) This is a Blade Fourums Trads knife..maybe two years ago? So, that makes it much cooler. 5) The congress frame, although the edges are rounded a bit, is still too square IMO and shows in my pocket.

Good stuff Randy. The smaller 3 blade is the #79 frame Montana whittler. They make a single spring/2 blade version on the frame as well ;)

I want to try a 62 easy pocket congress, the rounded bolsters look very comfy and pocket friendly.

Glad to see you are enjoying them

Still time for more people to sign up.

I will have my write up in soon, things have been Super hectic here with a career change going on and a 9 mo. old to take care of.

But, I grabbed that Boker Wire Jack for $10 with Plenty of life left, part of the factory edge was still showing. This is the rarer of the two types made, only difference between them being this has a larger stamped "Boker" tang stamp and the more common is an etched Boker tang mark. This was made between 1956-58 when the GEO Schrade family sold their company to Boker (todays Schrades brother George opened GEO Schrade after a fight between the two brothers, which closed up shop in '56 and sold to Boker who then closed up branch in '58)

I've carried the Viper for two days now and it's excellent. "The Viper is a must have for me. It's right up my alley. Single blade, thin w/ a med length." Just one issue; it's not a Viper. It's a Houndstooth. The wharny blade totally threw me off. Even when I had it in my hands I didn't realize what it is. I've never had either one but the Houndstooth is a little smaller than the Viper. Anyway, easy to carry and an excellent cutter. This is also very sharp. Maybe NJ Bill sharpened them all before sending them. The handles were re-done and they're super as well. I really like color and workmanship. It sits well in my pocket and almost disappears. I might have to seek an accord with Jeff on this one when we get done coon fingering them. (If he can part with it!)

I'm not a three blade guy because of the thickness of most of them but one has only two springs and is going to get some pocket time the next two days.......

I carried the 53 Ebony Stockman one day. Although it's a little thinner (because it has two springs vice three) than the Montana Whittler it's just too long for me. I kept hitting it in my pocket because of the length and way it sits in my pocket. So, the idea that it was a little thinner than the other three blade doesn't wash with the combined length for me.

I carried the Montana Whittler one day and even though it was a little thicker it's also shorter than the Stockman and carried much better IMO. This one has some super sharp blades also. The red jig bone grew on me and I came away actually liking this knife quite a bit. I much prefer the blade combo and blade style of this one as well.

I plan on carrying one of the F&F this weekend and then get the group in the mail on Monday.

Nice.

I abstained from this pass arround, because I have a handful of GEC already. Though, the patterns included here are ones I have not tried.

the cigar stockman is the pattern that most interested me.

I kind of jumped in to traditional a few years ago, I bought a handful. Some gec, and two Queen collaborations and a file and wire.

If I had the money again, I would have bought a whaler, and a cattle barron and one or two other GEC.

I have not purchased another traditional folder in years.

Bigfattyt,

That's the reason I got in on this. There are all of these knives I've never had an opportunity to put in my hands much the less carry and try out.

Your only cost is proper shipping!

I'd like to coon finger and chicken eye them all.

But, I'm not in a position to replace them all if something were to happen.

I have done pass around with knives of 1000 or more, but right now, I'm not where I used to be in petty cash.

I've had to sell off about 13 Busse, and pay taxes (Accountant screwed up major!) And medical bills!

If I don't have my knife fund ready to pay for the passarround, I am reluctant!

I love that knife. Not just the #79 Montana Whittler as a pattern, but that knife.

Jeff (Rockgolfer) was kind enough to share it with me for a time, to give it a go. I subsequently* located one of my own, which remains a favorite.

*Immediately, before having to send Jeff's back.

(A last picture with Jeff's knife, on which the bodacious jigging in deep red, complete with UN-X-LD shield, work so well.)

More here.

Thanks again, Jeff!

Glad you are enjoying them Randy

That houndstooth was a fantastic gift from fellow member Marksharp, I could never part with it.

BigT- the insurance covers the loss factor ;)

Sarah, was my pleasure :). The owl you let me borrow was the catalyst for my now blossomed single spring multi blade addiction, thanks :D. Hope all is well

Jeff

Alright, I carried and used the F&F this weekend and I really like it too. Nice and light but I think the handles are a bit thick for a single blade knife. I'd like to see them thinned down a little. The one I used was the uncommon one IMO. It's sharp and the blade gives you a nice point to use if needed. I also prefer the way it felt in my hand when opened compared to the sod buster style. The sod buster styled one had a rough edge to my hand from the liners when being held while open. So, I prefer the other one. Cool knives.

These are all getting boxed up and shipped tomorrow. Thanks for the opportunity to try all of these knives. I found a couple I didn't like, a couple I like and one I'll be searching for to have one of my own.

Yep, that knife has the "it" factor. The blade styles and combo is great and the length is manageable. I never imagined I'd like a thick three blade knife based upon my past preferences but that one's got me thinking different.
