A Girl's Journey to Becoming Survival Savy

I was just thinking that I may have made it look like I only have one knife, the Izula. However I have multiple blades, the Izula is my first fixed blade and I couldn't be more excited. I have a pink Spyderco Delica (my fav!), 2 pink KA-BAR Doziers (1 small, 1 big), Pink Chive, Silver Chive, purple Blade Tech Mouse Lite, Leatherman Knife (I am not sure of it's name however it is similar to the Leatherman C301, just plain edge), a Smith & Wesson Knife (again I do not know the model), Swiss Army Classic, Pink Swiss Army Keychain multi tool, and I may have more that I don't recall. So I have a lot! I am missing one knife that I want IMMENSELY which is the Pink Benchmade Griptilian Plain Edge, every time I see that knife I smile.

I had to share with other people at work today about my new adventure. I work at a domestic violence shelter with 99% women, and not one of them was anywhere near as excited as I was lol. Oh well, I love it!

i detect a theme here!

FYI, Spyderco has a Native in pink, and on the custom side, there's a Landi PSK in pink, with a pink sheath for sale in the exchange here.

and Light My Fire has a pink spork! :D

don't worry about the people at work not getting it, there are plenty of people out there who do.

for most tasks, there are many "right" ways to do them. as long as the way you're doing it is safe and works for you, don't worry if you're not doing it the way an article or video shows... if it works for you and achieves the goal, great.

welcome to W&SS. :D

In other words, males are intuitively bad at survival, and therefore must study it carefully :D

Decades ago, Dave Barry once wrote a piece about a Lord of the Flies scenario about kids on a deserted island.

He said in almost no time, the girls would have divided responsibilities, gathered firewood, obtained water, and formed shelter-building teams.

The boys would be pointing sticks at each other making gun noises, until they eventually started fighting over who had the best stick.

I remember that. Dave Barry's a funny man. He's also right, in this case. Welcome to the forums, Kristie. You'll learn a lot from the folks here, and likely teach us a few things as well.

Very cool and welcome! Keep us posted on your adventures, with pics please!

Welcome! My wife listens to what I read, but rarely includes her opinion here (outside of a giveaway or two). She goes with me wherever I travel outdoors. She has always loved camping but had limited experience until we got together. Our first camping trip she was solely responsible for the fire- started it with a firesteel and kept it going until we left 3 days later. We have found that if we plan a skill for our trips then we have more purpose and keep things interesting. My wife decided to make a BOB before she knew what one was, so therefore I knew she was the right one.

You are on the right track! Don't get discouraged, play in the dirt a lot, and keep posting here- I know I appreciate the company of women, and this place needs more company! Plus now you need a Kukuri, a machete, a Koyote, a Leuko, A Fiddleback, 8 different firesteels......

You need a good fixed blade. I think I still have pink g-10...

Welcome

My wife did not know much about knives when we married--in 2006

Now She has a whole box full:eek:

You will find your relationship getting stronger the more time you spend testing knives---and it's FUN too:thumbup::thumbup:

Do not fall into the trap of getting a knife for a girl

Get what fits your hand best..

Some of the knives Carol LOVES would have been too big for her(IMHO)--but after testing them--only she can tell me what works for her.

Again--Welcome:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Re: women in the wild. Yeah, they tend to be more of the organize the campsite types.

I think it comes down to that men are strategic thinkers and women are tactical thinkers. I.e. men inherently want to venture forth, find resources, claim and mark out territory and protect it. Women want to make the territory better once there.

The few women I got to go outdoors all fell right into this. I really didn't think about it at the time, but later it hit me. We'd go, establish a decent campsite near readily found water and such. She always wanted to hang out, get a fire going, pitch the tarps and make the place livable. After gathering a good amount of firewood, I always wanted to head out and see if there was better water available, what kind of edibles (plant and animal) were around, scout out the area, see if there was anyone around and such.

IMO Men an women are supposed to complement each other, not supplement each other -- the one is supposed to be good at the things the other one sucks at. Which is where the term "opposites attract" comes from.

Man you said it. Me and Lady, oil and water. But I was laughing about what you wrote, cause that's us to a tee. I get the grunt work done, setup, and I head out screaming and grunting into the woods. When I get back all dirty and sweaty, the place is clean, running, and she's sittin' by the fire drinking coffee. "Have fun?" she'll ask, "Yep" and then we commence to camp. Wonder if cavemen and cavewomen were the same way? Moose
