hey every one i need to upgrade my headlamp so does any one have any good led headlamp recommendations?

Princeton Tec. Pick a model that meets what you want in battery size and you won't be disappointed.

+1  on the Princeton Tec. Check out their EOS model. I thought it was a bit pricey at about $35-40 but since the first time I brought it out, I have had no second thoughts.

Zebralight all the way man. I love mine. Very versitle piece of gear, and very high quality.

I have a Princeton Tec Quad and a Black Diamond Ion. I reccomend both as they are excellent lights.

I have to admit, the Zebralights looks pretty damn cool. I have other stuff that works off 123s, but in the end, I like something that can interchange batteries with my other gear. Spare batteries of multiple types is just one less thing I have to bring.

Of course I'm going to put a link to a review I did...

but I really love my Tikka XP headlamp from petzl. I still use it all the time, and it is really easy to adjust

dork review here.

Hey Joe,

Can you use lithiums in that model? I like the looks of Petzl, but most state specifically to NOT use lithiums. It may not seem like a big deal, but when winter camping is when lithiums really shine. It is a MUST for any light for me, because I do not have to worry about keeping things warm to work.

I am assuming that model is not recommended for lithiums, but that you will know more about that specific one than me.

Lookm at petzl light too! I have a tikka+. Its great. Long life brightness adjust, comfortable in extended wear.

I have both the AA and the 123 zebralight. I prefer the cr123a one b/c it shares the same betteries as my RA twisty, and has a tailcap switch as opposed to the twist on and off.

The AA is great though. Bombproof, and takes a common battery available everywhere.

The headbands are quality, and they remove from the bracket and come with another bracket on a neck lanyard, and another bracket with a pocket/belt clip. Too cool. Worth every penny. The brackets and tailswitch also glow in the dark.

From the Petzl website:

Due to recent advances in the performance characteristics of Lithium batteries (especially their higher output during discharge), they can cause the lamp to overheat and possibly damage the LEDs.

Do not use Lithium batteries with the following lamps

* TIKKA / ZIPKA range: TIKKINA / TIKKA / ZIPKA / TACTIKKA / TIKKA PLUS / ZIPKA PLUS / TACTIKKA PLUS / TIKKA XP / TACTIKKA XP / TIKKA XP ATEX / TIKKA XP HAZLOC.

If cold weather performance is a consideration, I would stay away from Petzl all together.....which was the original reason that forced me from Petzl to Princeton Tec. PT has no issue recommending lithiums.

Make sure you get the 50 lumen model, and make sure it has the frosty lens.

Lithium compatible
2x the runtime
warm LED that's great outside
floody easy to use beam
waterproof

I use this one constantly w/ rechargeable AAAs. It sits in my coat pocket.

On the Zebralight h50, you have to partially unscrew the tailcap, and then screw it back it to change light levels - a little bit of a pain, but worth it for the more common/cheaper batteries IMO. I pair it with a Fenix L1D or L2D - plenty of extra light options & common batteries.

I've thought about picking up the 123 model to pair with my P2D, but I've been trying to keep my 123-type lights to a minimum.

I've got a few other headlamps - PT Eos, PT Aurora, etc..., but the Zebralight is my favorite.

I've got some little Princeton (forget the model) but I find they bug me wearing them after awhile. Useful though. However, as I don't tend to do overnights away from the van, mine is sitting in the closet these days.

However, what I have done is to toss my old Nite Ize Mini-Mag flashlight headband into one of my packs. While it's designed to hold a Mini-Mag, those are too heavy. Turns out the elastic loop will hold my Fenix E01 securely so if I need a headlamp, that's the way I'm going these days. It doesn't have the same adjustability as a proper headlamp but it's one less item to carry and is adjustable enough so that I can read by it.
