I've got boonie hats, Columbia nylon hats, straw hats, a good felt cowboy hat with a wide flat brim (which is my second choice), and have tried the Tilley. This beats them all.

It's got a real stiff brim. I'm red headed and live in a sunny region.

My brother had a Tilley and I always had a dislike for them because he raved about it so much. Later, more styles came out and I bought an LTM5 AirFlo for my birthday. I have to say that it is a great hat. It is very comfortable, light, and looks OK. A little pricey, but it is a quality hat.

on another note, (and sorry for the hijack) anyone have tips on how to wear hats without getting hat hair?

Sure. Just don't take it off. :D

I wear a do rag (fitted bandana) under my motorcycle helmet for just this reason. It works pretty good. Plus the bandana is a lot easier to wash than the lining of my helmet, which is not removable.

My father has a Tilley hat. It's very well made. Short of throwing it into a camp fire or feeding it to a bear, I don't see it getting destroyed.

I have an REI Explorer hat. It's very similar to the Tilley and quite well made, but a bit cheaper.

Never had a Tilley but hear good things about them all the time.

I'm a fan of Filson Tin Cloth and use either a Tin Cloth Packer Hat, Tin Cloth baseball cap, or Shelter Cloth baseball cap. All are great in the rain, but do lead to a hot head on hot days.

Tilley has a new hat which is completely mesh on the crown,T10,T11 I believe, check the web site. Do not get the nylon hats,as they are hotter than the hubs of hell. I bought a mesh and wore it for the first time the other day and was it comfortable. Gazaati, sometimes the model dictates the colour. Khaki with the olive underbrim is my favourite. I also have a hemp in Mocha which I find cooler than the original. The original is basically waterproof as is. On really hot days I just soak my t3 and then have personal air conditioning.

For people who have Tilley hats, what color is best? I am about to order one but the pictures do not show the true colors.
They have:

khaki
olive
gray
natural

What color should i go for guy?

I have the natural (white). I like it. It's cool in the sun, but mine has stained around the brow area from sweat if that's a concern for you. (Yes, I wash it ocassionally.)

I can't seem to make one hat work for all conditions. I have a couple mesh crown hats for hot weather (Dorfman Pacific and Field & Stream), good fur felt hats for cooler but relatively dry weather (Rand and D Bar J Hat Companies), and waterproof hats (like OR Seattle Sombrero or Columbia's equivalent) for rainy weather. My people were mostly from Scandinavia and we evolved for sneaking up on English coastal villages on foggy nights. We don't do well in the sun unless we wear a hat ALL the time.

Thanks, I was thinking about olive, would the olive be hotter than the khaki for example?
Also, there is a model from tilley called airflo, it is nilon but with mesh, would that be good for hot country?

I've got the Tilley T3 in Olive and it hasn't been too hot for me, but then I live in the Pacific Northwest. :o

I do want to pick up the Khaki with Olive underbrim but am currently looking at a few of the models recommended by some of the posters in this thread.

It gets hot where I live, (90-100 degrees F), but it's dry, so I just soak the hat in water or throw a wet bandanna in the crown and benefit from the evaporative cooling effect.

Coolest to Hottest (IMO):
-White (natural)
-Tan/Khaki/Coyote, etc
-Olive Drab or Dark Brown
-Black

+1 for Watership.
I have a tilley, but the vineyard haven is a better hat - for me.

another :thumbup: for the Tilley , I've had mine for about 13 years and it's been all over the world with me; in the desert, arctic and jungle, and it still looks like new. I've taken out the light weight padding in the pocket (supposed to make it float) and it's much cooler...

If you are looking for a stiff brim, it's hard to beat the Akubra
