A hat?

Hard to find a hot weather hat that keeps your head cool w/o making you look dorkey. When I first got into hiking and backpacking big time my choice was a Tilley T3. I wore it until it practically disintegrated.

I haven't been very happy with the super-cool (thermally speaking), nylon, ventilated hiking hats I've been using lately. Sometimes the engineer in me looks only at technical factors and comes up with headgear that could make a corpse chuckle. Think I'll get another Tilley. :D

I love those Akubras. I may get one of those too for dress wear, but I would never take it out into the desert. Too fine for that.

I've been looking at Akubra hats. Shipping costs are rather unpalatable, though. The hats themselves are cheaper than Tilley, but I could go downtown and buy a Tilley from the store, while an Akubra has to be mailordered from Australia at $30 shipping. :P

I think you will find it cheaper to buy in Oz and pay the shipping than to buy here.

I know you will have a bigger selection.

I've got two hats from Ultimate Hat. Look a lot like the Tilley but I can't compare since I haven't owned a Tilley yet. One of them is in canvas, floats, and has lasted over 10 years. The other is ligherweight, made from some synthetic material, and is my goto hat when I'm working outside in the summer time. Both are quality.

Glad you brought that up. I was mistaken in my earlier post claiming my first hiking hat was a Tilley. It's been so long since it bit the dust that I forgot it was actually an Ultimate Hat. Here's the one I had:

I've owned a couple of Tilleys since the UH, and they are so similar it's easy to confuse them. Glad I found the UH website though, because I actually prefer some of their models to the Tilleys. Here's one I like:

The same model also comes in khaki.

Which models do you have?
