hi everyone, I am currently looking for a new knife. I want to find the last knife I will ever need to buy. I am looking at the ka bar 1258 short black straight edge with kydex sheath, the sog seal pup and the cold steel srk. All are about the same price and are all in the smaller survival knife size. I want this knife to go in water, salt and fresh, backpacking, and everything in between.

what would you recommend?

Thanks a million

Since you said it's gonna go into fresh and salt water, I recommend the SRK because the steel (AUS-8A) is corrosion resistant. The seal pup is made of AUS-6, which is equally corrosion resistant but with lesser edge holding ability than the AUS-8. The Kabar is made of 1095 carbon steel, which by definition is NOT stainless. The Kabar will rust a whole lot faster than the other two if you take it swimming.

i recommend a Fällkniven S1 it's a little more expensive.. but for the last knife in you're life you can spend a little more :D

But if i must choose between srk, seal pup and short ka-bar

i would go with the Cold Steel SRK & i would put a nice convex edge on it.

I agree with all of this 100%. If you don't get the Fallkniven S1, make the SRK as S1 like as possible and convex the edge. I heard those things have thick edges.

I just noticed that the CS SRK is uncannily similar in design and dimension to Fallkniven A1. Cold Steel claims that the SRK is the official issue knife for Navy Seal BUD/S program, and I find it believable. It's cheap, it's lightweight for the size, it's made of decent but not expensive steel, it has simple & clean lines that doesn't make it prone to snagging on stuff, and it has good kydex-like sheath that doesn't absorb water. You got a knive with performance close to Fallkniven A1 at half the price! I say the SRK is a good deal.

What Suzuki said. I was going to recommend a Salt as well.
What (cutting chores) are you planning on using this for?

Here you go: Spyderco Aqua Salt. 4.7in blade. H1.

I am planning on mostly using it for backpacking and such. Nothing terribly out of the ordinary, I only threw in the salt water part because I am planning on joining the Coast Guard and wanted a knife I can take with me to use there.

Well out of those three, the SRK is your best bet if you're expecting to encounter wet/damp conditions... and if you're backpacking a lot, you will! As was already mentioned, 1095 carbon (Ka-Bar) won't handle it as well as AUS-8a or AUS-6.

You really should take a look at Fallkniven (F1, A1, S1), but if you're sticking with those three, go with the SRK.

Let us know what you decide! :)

Does the Coast Guard let you carry any knife you want?

I actually do not know about the coast guard and their rules on knives. I read another post about someone asking of these rules for the army and a very informed person said it depended on your CO and what not. So I am just thinking of being prepared for everything and if I can't bring it, then I still have a very nice knife for weekend outings to the mountains.

I would go with the SRK or seal pup. I have beat the crap out of my seal pup for years and it has been very durable. The SRK however i think would be a little more versatile. I have owned the Kabar short and I was not impressed.

s-1 or srk

If you want something that will deal with saltwater go with the Spyderco.
