A Kephart and me.....

Thanks I missed that ... but what a Christmas present they would make ... I am actually excited to see these ... not often a knife gets my mouth watering in anticipation anymore ... but this is almost like coming home ... I'll be ready as soon as I see them.
Been waiting for this one for some time. So glad it's now a reality.

Besides, if the Colclesser Brothers can make one by hand, and sell it for $2.00, surely KA-BAR can sell it for less, haha. :D
well, when Colclesser was selling knives for $2, Ford was selling cars for $265 -- shift the decimal 2 places, and you have the price of the last 3 new BKT knives -- and the price of a new car.
so yes, I REALLY hope KaBar can sell this one for less. ;)

OTOH - Colclesser knives were handmade, Mike's copy is handmade.........

I haven't read through all the comments yet. But I can honestly tell you that I WILL buy your version of the Kephart. Looking forward to it actually. Don't really need another woods knife, but when has that EVER stopped me? What is the blade length on the Kabar version? Did you say there will be two versions? I assume that means different blade lengths.

I have the Condor Kephart and was looking for something better. Hoping for a 5" more or less model. Was considering a custom, but put that off too. Now, I know what my Christmas knife will be!

I loved reading the Horace Kephart books. I guess my only criticism is that he seemed to dwell on the corn whisky still thing a bit too much. Learned some things too. I have always been really interested in the people of the Southern Appalachians, especially since I live here. I downloaded the Camping and Woodcraft book (free version) once and it was rather tedious to go through in that format. So, I bought one over at the Smoky Mt visitor center in Townsend. It is the kind of book you browse around in rather than simply reading page to page to the end.

Hope you are enjoying the West and not missing East Tennessee too much. Are you planning on attending the SMKW manufacturer days this year?

There is a reason Kephart liked to talk about corn whisky. The story includes how he met his death if you look into it.

I know he died in an auto accident. Have no idea if alcohol was involved.

Added: I haven't read the last book or acquired it yet. It will happen. Would prefer a Kindle version as I have gotten to the point I no longer want to keep piling up books on the shelf, unless it's some sort of reference book.

Need to watch the video. Bought it a while back and have not watched it yet.

What video?

A historical kind of video was produced kind of like the Civil War series that was on TV about Horace Kephart. They sell it at the various visitor centers near the park entrances. Believe they have it at the Cades Cove gift shop near the mill too. http://horacekephart.com/index.html

Added: I looked on the big river site (Kindle) and it said I already owned "Our Southern Highlanders" book. Funny. Will have to open it up. Not sure I read it yet but I looked on my tablet versus the actual kindle. I have read at least one of his books cover to cover, cruised through the camping and woodcraft book, and read part of the Indian book he wrote. I'll figure it out. :D
