I want to get my boyfriend. life for his birthday. He has a couple knives already, all are folding pocket knives. I’m pretty new to this whole thing and i wanna get him something that he’ll like a lot.

Welcome to the forums! If you answer a few questions we can probably help a lot more. About how much are you looking to spend? Are you wanting to get him a solid work knife that he won't be afraid to beat on? A fancier gentleman's knife that he can carry in a suit that might do well with a bit of engraving? A more traditional pocket knife like his father or grandfather might have carried? There are a ton of great options out there, so anything you can tell us to narrow things down will be helpful!

Howdy and welcome:)

What does your bf like to do? What is your budget? Plenty of folks here happy to help with just a bit more info.

That is very nice of you!

I would get him a gift card to somewhere like BladeHQ and let him pick out something he likes.

yeah, some folks are very particular
about what their like in a gift..
especially when there are thousands
of knives out thre to pick from!
however, true love is blind!
i belive if its a gift from the heart,
any gift will be treasued
as a keepsakes even if its
not up to usual expectations
of the loved one.
but never try an make a lasting impression
with lavisly expensive gifts if
you are not surev about a person's likes.
that's why gift certs and suxh
have been so wisely suggested
in the end its the thought that counts.
and good luck with the decision!

Would you be able to take a pic of his collection, part of it, or his favorites. Might give insight to his taste or preference.

Maybe cash/ gift card?

There is a lot to be said for giving him the actual knife rather than the gift card. One Christmas quite a few years ago, I woke up to find an accordion under the tree. It was a used Titano, not real expensive, but a beautiful objet in its own right. I am not musical, had never wanted an accordion, or even thought about wanting one.

It might have been the best gift I ever received. I signed up for lessons with the dean of local accordion players, and went for about a year, never getting very good, but I kept plugging away until a torn rotator cuff from a dirt bike tumble put an end to it.

Think of how flat that gift would have fallen had she just given me a gift card and said, “Merry Christmas, Sweetie. Why don’t you go pick yourself out a nice used accordion”.

Do a little sleuthing. Or not. Just get him a Benchmade or Spyderco, assuming your budget will allow it. I can’t imagine a Mini Griptilian or Delica would not hit the spot.

+1 for the gift card idea to Blade HQ
If you want to have an actual knife to present to him on his birthday, the Spyderco Tenacious is a good idea I think.
It won't break the bank as they are all around $50.00 and they have quite a few colors and blade combos to choose from.
Pick the one you think he'd like the best.
Finding him a Spyderco that you can afford is a good idea in general because I haven't seen too many people
not like a Spyderco I gifted them. They always comment on the comfort and sharpness during use when I see them again.

I don’t wanna spend more that 150-200 but he’s not too complicated, he’s a city guy, has a couple folding pocket ounces that he lies to fool around with. He’s pretty outdoorsy, but enjoys video games from time to time. He’s become quiet enamored by knives lately though.

I would go to knifeworks.com and get him a Spyderco Paramilitary or Manix 2 and have them engrave something on the blade. (tell them to not make it too small or too big). You can have his initials or his name put on the blade.

If you want a solid work knife that will serve him well a Spyderco Manix 2 would be an excellent choice. If you want something fancier and more sophisticated with a bit of a traditional twist, I would look at the CIVIVI Rustic Gentleman.

There are so many great knives out there in your price range and lower that it makes it hard to give a solid recommendation.

If you want to buy him an actual knife vs. a gift card it is extremely hard to argue against a Spyderco Delica 4. Just get the full flat grind in VG10 steel. This knife will serve him for years and will help him determine what he likes.
