I take my answer back. I would actually like to open a gift. Your knife gift budget is actually more that I expected.

My suggestion would be to check a few sites and sort by spyderco, benchmade or zero tolerance. Sort by low to high. And see what speaks to you. Something you choose feels more meaningful to me. And you have dozens of options.

I agree with Insipid Moniker about the Spyderco Manix 2. It falls in your price range and it’s a fantastic knife. It comes in a variety of steels like CTS-BD1, S30V, and S110V. Don’t worry too much about the steels for now. Any of those three will serve him well, although S30V and S110V will hold their edge longer.

The Spyderco Endura 4 is also a darling of mine. It’s a modest, non-tactical looking knife with a lot of blade and that’s not afraid of getting some work done. You can’t go wrong with this choice either.

Although a bit on the smaller side, the Spyderco Para 3 lightweight (LW) is also a magnificent choice. This one is more compact than the two already mentioned, but it’s also ergonomic, “slicey” thanks to the blade shape, and relatively inexpensive. I know I love my Para 3.

Finally, you said something about him being an outdoorsy guy. The folding knife I’d take with me camping is the Cold Steel Recon 1. It comes in three blade shapes, but the most practical of the three and what I recommend is the drop point or leaf-shaped blade. Arguably, because of its robust construction, the Recon 1 can take more punishment and generally outlast the Spydercos in moderate to hard-use applications. There are cons however: it’s bulkier than the Spydies and the lock is harder to disengage. For those reasons, I generally recommend Spydercos as gifts over anything else. You can’t go wrong with Spydercos.

My apologies for this drawn out post, but I hope it proves to be of some use. Whatever you decide on, you’re already an MVP for deciding to get him a blade. Any of us guys here would be overjoyed to receive a gracious gift from the woman that holds our hearts.

Go to the DLT Trading website: dlttrading.com. Search for the Benchmade Bugout. They have this knife in three colors from $127 to $144. Pick the color you think he'd like. DLT will engrave initials, etc. on the blade at no charge. DLT will ship the knife free to you (or him). DLT processes and ships their products very quickly. The Bugout is one of the most popular and best selling knives over the past two years. It's very lightweight, yet strong enough for everyday carry. It's also very non-threatening in a social type situation.....office carry, etc.

That's my best suggestion....aren't many knife folks around that aren't Benchmade Bugout fans. And good for you in thinking of something personal and useful for your boyfriend's birthday!
 
Are you in the US? Would he appreciate a US made knife? If so:
For a great all around user knife: Benchmade Mini Griptilian. Not fancy, Doesn't feel, at first, like a hundred dollar knife. But a classic for good reason, and the more you use it, the more you like it. Also available customized on Benchmade's website. (edit) I forgot about the Bugout. Almost a modern day Griptilian. Well worth consideration, and perhaps the best choice. I want one, too. Like the Grip, not fancy, until you've owned it a while.
For a fun, badass, tactical but useful, as seen on TV, fun to fiddle with knife: Zero Tolerance 0350. I like the tiger stripe. Not for sissies.
For a funny looking, but surprisingly useful, interesting, and fun to fiddle with knife: Spyderco Para 3.

If you're not in the US, or he wouldn't care, well, that's another post.
 
What he has already is a good place to start - no sense in getting him a duplicate.
Your budget offers lots of great options.

Not meaning to complicate things for you... but there's more to life, and knives, than folders. There are fixed blades, autos, and multi tools (and tomahawks). Personally, I prefer a fixed blade over modern folders... though I generally carry both, along with a traditional.
How old is he going to be? And when is his birthday?

I commend you for coming here to ask. I dislike when the people in my life try to give me knives - mainly because what they typically choose is nothing I would ever carry. While you'll get a variety of suggestions here, they'll all be decent knives.

This about him being outdoorsy makes me think... why not get him a fixed blade? Everyone who is into knives needs at least one, and you said that he only has folders. Something different than his norms could really hit the spot. Plus, that way there's no risk you'll get him a knife that he already has :D

Any guy will get excited to put his hands on something like Recon Tanto, SRK, BK9, or even something smaller like Esee 3 or Esee 4. We all have that inside ourselves :D

BTW Esee has no questions asked lifetime warranty (no receip ot box needed either). You send it in - they send you a new one.

Anyone will go camping/fishing sooner or later, and fixed blade camping knife is a tool I think anyone should have.

He also already has a great girlfriend who took her time and put her thoughts into making him happy, I'm sure he will appreciate whatever your choice is.

And I would also say that with a giftcard you lose some kind of personality that actual gift would have. It's different to just get card or money and to get actual gift.
All the best gifts I remember were actual things or places I was taken to ;)

I agree Smiling. You give gift cards to those relatives or nephews/nieces you see twice a year lmao. Actual gifts we give to those closest to our hearts.
 
I second the belt knife option. An Esee Izula would be a good one, and you could get it in his favorite color maybe.
 
If you have enough time before his bday, find a way to get him to go to this site, and within a couple of days he won't stop talking about the knives he wants.

+1 on checking what’s legal to carry in your state/country/city. This is a fairly important consideration that’s easily forgotten once the cursor hovers over Add to Cart lmao.
 
I say get him a Spyderco Delica 4 (available in several colours) and pick out two Swiss Army Victorinox Classic SDs (little 58mm keychain knives)--one for him and one for you. The Classics are super handy and come in a wide variety of designs/colours/themes.

I just can't think of anybody who would be unhappy with a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 as a gift. It would be such a sentimental gift to receive from a significant other as well.
 
Get him Swamp Rat Ratmandu. It's fixed blade that's tough as nails and can be found often here or on Fleabay. The brand has the best warranty and is a carry sized fixed blade.
