A knife trade gone wrong. What to do?

As of now, my knife is less than a week late, so maybe I'm just jumping ahead too much. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it arrives.

This makes the whole deal suspect! On a trade, neither party should sell, trade, modify or even sharpen a knife they receive until the other party has received their knife and acknowledged approval of it's condition!

They never should have sold your knife before the trade was completed (you received the other knife and confirmed your satisfaction with it)

Did this trade happen here?

I made a trade here once and my end never made it
I kept the other partie's knife until it was clear mine had been lost. (We both agreed on this) Then I sent his back unused and filed a claim with the post office and got my money back. If I hadn't bought insurance, I still would have been responsible because only I can insure my end and collect. The guy waiting on my end cannot.

Let me play Devil’s advocate. Let’s say we agree on a way to reimburse me and I get some money from them. Then, later on, my trade finally shows up. Do I then contact them and now return the funds they sent? Also, what if we cannot agree on a fair value for the trade? I think it’s worth $x, but they think it’s worth $y.

This sucks all around.

If you cannot reach an agreement on value you are screwed. The only fair thing to do is share the loss. If it were me that sold the knife I would send you half the proceeds.

If you have been reimbursed then the knife shows up, you should contact the other party and return the reimbursement. That's only fair.

It does suck all around.

The party sending is responsible for delivery. Don't insure it's a risk they take. You took the same risk , but your package made it. Don't use insurance it's on the shipper and only the shipper can purchase insurance and collect on what they ship.
This ^^^^
If you don't buy insurance you are self insuring.

I’ve asked them about getting my knife back, but they’ve already sold it. I suppose I can ask them to compensate me for it, but I’d feel kind of like a jerk for asking that. It’s not their fault. I guess I just got unlucky this time.

Make clear to the guy that you expect to be compensated if the package doesn't arrive. Agree on how long you'll wait (same as the USPS makes one wait for filing a claim?) and also agree on the value of the knives lost.
If the package doesn't show up by the chosen date, contact him for compensation.
He's the one who should be taking the loss because the package was his responsibility. If he couldn't cover the loss he should have bought insurance.

Did the OP even get tracking numbers?

I was assuming both parties had tracking numbers and could see the packages moving through the system.

The other party probably just said that he sold the knife so he would not be left with nothing. Seems a little shady.

I would also speculate that some percentage of packages lost by USPS are due to poor packaging. Sometimes when I'm in the post office I notice how poorly people tape their boxes.

The mail does take some time. Teleportation is only for SciFi.

Winter and bad weather will slow it down even more if it has to travel any distance.

One more vote for sender is responsible.

Had the post office lose a red M390 para 2 that I sold last month. Sent a refund. It’s what you do.

Not exactly apples to apples, but I have had one order coming from overseas and 2 domestic order from Cabela's over the last 2-3 weeks that ALL were like this. They took FOREVER, but they did all arrive in the end. Weather has not been nice lately.
