I know this probably isn't the right place to post this but this is the only part of the forum I really visit so I hope maybe some of you fine fellows could help me.

Some of you will know I live in Northern Ireland and I've wanted to go to America for a long time so I'm heading out this September with a friend. We haven't everything finalised as of yet but we were probably gonna hit Texas. I'd love any advice on places to go, people to meet, anything.

We really just want to get an opportunity to do stuff that is really hard to do over here - shoot some amazing guns, see some amazing knives, buy a whole load of boots, see some great guitars too if we can :D.

Thanks very much and I'm really sorry if this is in the wrong place and feel free to move it :D

If you go to Texas I would stop and see Mike Snody if possible. He is the first that came to mind as far as Texas. Of course see the Alamo too.

What Kevin said.

If you don't get a lot of responses here it is not because folks don't want to help, it is because they are overwhelmed by the scope of the inquiry. And to add to what Kevin said, not only have I been all over this country to a million interesting places, but there are a million more i would like to see that I probably never will. Without knowing more . . . it's just impossible.

Maybe narrow it down to a couple of places you want to visit, and I'm sure folks would be glad to give you some suggestions.

So far I have a route worked out from San Antonio to New York, with stops in between at guitar factories, random luthiers, and fingers crossed jus running into stuff along the way.
Can people show up and shooting ranges and get a chance to fire what they want? And if anyone knows any good knife shops that would be great too :D

the route is

San antonio
Alamo
Austin
Dallas
Shreveport
Little Rock
Memphis
Nashville
Rugby, Virginia
Washington
Nazareth
New York

Phew - I'm tired :D

Well....

I'm Irish....and I know NYC well, although I live in CT now. The Metropolitan Museum has an AWESOME arms and armor exhibit - really worth checking out

Bill

IIRC aren't you a big Bagwell fan? Might want to give Bill a call and ask if you can stop by to visit.

From Shreveport to Little Rock you drive right through Texarkana.
Swing west about 15 miles and see the forge of James Black who forged the Rezin and James Bowie's knives.
As well, stop and see the American Bladesmith Society School and museum.

While in Memphis check out Rum Boogie Cafe. Not only do they have amazing BBQ and other fantastic southern favorites, hanging on their walls is one of the most mind-boggling collection of signed guitars anywhere! You will see guitars played and signed by everybody from Angus Young to ZZ Top ( A to Z!),and everyone in between!

Pootsy,
I live half an hour from Little Rock. Got some cool guns and some old strats.
I'll be offended if you don't come by and shoot some or play some loud music.
You're welcome any time.

Tad

Not really my geographical area of expertise, although I've been through all those areas multiple times. No shooting and no good knife shops (that I know of anyways) in New York or Washington DC. (If you were headed for the State I'd be happy to put you up and show you some guns, etc.)

There's some good bladesmiths in the AR, LA, Mississippi River valley area. You should have no trouble hooking up with some. ob Dozier's over that way, and so is AJ Russell.

Yea, a few of the spots I'm looking to see are the Alamo, Martin Guitar, Collings Guitar and the luthier Wayne Henderson. I would def visit the ABS so that's another one to add and the James Black forge too. Anything else along the route of interest like that would be great.
I've sent Mr Bagwell an email and sent Tad one this morning as well only to see he'd got a post on this, cheers Tad I would love to stop by.
I'd glady take any invitations, so thanks very much Eisman :D, and gladly return the favour if any of my fellow forumites were to visit my part of the world.
It was meant to be a friend and I but with University stuff and all for him he thinks it would be too much of a stretch so it looks like it'll be me flying solo, which is probably better as I can be very selfish on this holiday of a lifetime :D

If you like guitars and music and want to see a show ,Red Rocks in Jefferson, colorado is awesome venue.

The Knifemakers Guild Show will be held the weekend of September 20th in Louisville KY.

Don't know if you will be close by, but it would be worth a detour.

Take care

Charles

I've never been to Texas but always wanted to visit there. All I can say is have fun and damn I'm envious!

Shoot me an email when you're in Austin, and I'll make sure you get some great barbecue.
