howdy,

on receipt of a new patrol machete, and the last generation of machax, i felt that the family should have a group shot... so... from the old to the new.

sorry for the lack of rotation, thunderstorm coming, and i'm in a hurry to get this done so i can be elsewhere. i might clean'er up later ;)

left to right:
o BK-?? -- Reinhardt BK&T "Kukri", Effingham, Illinois, USA - leather sheath
o BK-06 -- Patrol Machete, current camillus
o BK-01 -- Brute - Effingham, Illinois, USA - leather sheath
o BK-04 -- Machax, nickel-phosphate finish, Cincinnati - leather sheath
o BK-04 -- Machax, blued?, Cincinnati - combat sheath
o BK-04 -- Machax, no marks no nothing, smooth gray epoxy finish
o BK-04 -- Machax, last gen camillus
o BK-02 -- Campanion, current camillus
o BK-05 -- Magnum Camp, last gen camillus
o BK-09 -- Combat Bowie, current camillus
o BK-07 -- Combat Utility, current camillus
o BK-11 -- Becker Necker, current camillus

here's two more, effectively closer:

i have to say, the profile/edge grinds on the two cincinnati machax's is incredible, they're super super smooth, like razors, there's no sudden bump or crude convex like the epoxy coated one, which is worse than the last generation one, which features an edge more like the patrol machete. however, it does look like someone put a more convex chopping edge on the blued one, not unlike the current/last machax, somewhat a hybrid. the nickel-phosphate machax and reinhardt are more close in that regard.

the old style brute and the campanion also have similar profiles, and edges, thin and fairly sharp... compare to the CU7 which is almost like the patrol machete (sharp and tough), and the combat bowie which is thinner and very much like the magnum camp - thinner, sharp, but not as thin as the campanion. the necker came to me really sharp, and has a stout edge, this thing is a sleeper, for $30? a beck knife this robust? yow.

the style in sheaths is interesting too - i put those in the frame to get an impression of the changes too. they went from nice stitched leather in the olden days, to a funky combat sheath which i like a lot (lower right) (is that original to becker?) to this kydex stuff which i don't so much like. the patrol machete is in a sort of soft rubberized lined thing, doesn't have a kydex stiffener or inner protection - i should fix that if i carry it.

depends on what you're going to DO with it. certainly not prying, but it's a good chopper, thicker than the similar Ontario RTAK (which has a nicer sheath imho and a huge handle - wow).

an all purpose truck knife? get a brute, then forget about it :) "poor man's bussee", if you manage to break it, even if camillus doesn't refund you, you're still only 1/10th into the game :)

No can do!!! it's one of my favorites... If you like the campanion you will love the crewman! It will outcut it with much ease but wont outchop it due to the campanion not having a flat enough grind. The campanion is the only one that has a solid full tang though while the others have cutouts to reduce weight.

I really wish camillus would bring out more designs to the becker line. I really liked the older knives, mostly because of the variation.

Great pics!

they convinced me - I'm getting a BK9!

(already have the Necker)
I love the bk9. It's a fantastic knife that is easy to carry and mine is actually thicker than my bk2 even though the bk2 is supposed to be thicker my 9 has a thicker spine but is flatter ground allowing it to outcut the 2. If you dont have the 7 or 10 you will definately want to add these too.

OK...you know I'm standing at the edge of the pool...
and it's not gonna take too much to push me into the water! :)

Once I have the 9 I guess I'll need ;) the 7, the 10,

and now I'm eyeing the 1 also...

I must have been reading too much about Beckers............I just ordered a BK7 a couple days ago.

I think i started with the 7 and ended up with most of the line!

My first two Beckers are due to arrive today (bk7 and bk10). So excited...

Thanks for the recommendation Bladite.

Bladite,

Thanks for the great pictures of a great collection! I have a Cincinnati Machax and I love it, despite negative reviews I've read. I thought you may be interested in the following. It is an evaluation of the Machax by American Survival Guide magazine (now defunct). I don't have a scanner so I can't scan the page, but I typed it out and converted it to a Jpeg - hope it works, if not, and you want the Word document, email me and I'll send it to you.

Very nice collection!
I Really love my BK7. I grinded the lower part of the handle to a nice round economic one. So no more arguments about the uncomfortable lower handle grip for chopping. Very little work whit only 150 sandpaper.

But Bladite, I’m really missing the serrated Campanion. That military Issued one.
