I'm not even sure how to start this....I'm so dang tired and depressed lately.
I apologise in advance to everyone for my seemingly short and somewhat terse responses lately. I havent felt well since catching a nasty bug well before the holidays and now that i've gotten thru most of it thanks to modern medicine, i'm just feeling a bit worn out.

Our little buddy, Marbles is having some serious problems and i think it's time we could use some smoke, prayer and positive thoughts.

So far the diagnosis is intravertabral disc disease. He is on pain meds and has been ordered to cage/bedrest for the next 6-8 weeks to see if his condition improves. If it does not, he will have to have spinal surgery.
This makes i and my family very nervous as a positive outcome is 50/50, even at an optimistic level. Then theres the cost of all this, which is something that is going to be hard to bear on our meager income. I will go into debt and do whatever is needed to bring this to a positive outcome.
Over the last week or so his backleg gait has worsened a bit, he has been having pain in the belly area and he is having problems with not being able to defacate and urinate. He also is unwilling to eat or drink much The last couple problems being attributed to the pain meds. We have to eyedropper him water and feed him from a spoon but at least he is getting something in him. We just have to keep working on getting enough. He may need to take valium in order to be able to go to the bathroom as the nerves in that area become compressed.
Hopefully with good care and plenty of rest, we can bring this around.
But it is hard being hopeful.
The good part is that we have one of the best vet clinics in the area to help us and marbles has been going to the Cornell University Veterinary Hosptal for Animals. Cornell will probably do the surgery, should it come to that. Both places are within 15 miles of us and know us well.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He is a Sweet little soul and all around good boy, who IMHO, shouldnt be having this happen to him.

Now, i've gotta get ready to take my human son to the dentist for a molar extraction......

Aw, man- I can only imagine how rough that must be. :(
Prayers and positive thoughts for hope and healing headed your way! :)

Ah, this story breaks my heart. It's eerily similar to what our greyhound went through a few years back. Marbles will be in my prayers.

Thanks Mac! Good To see you , Buddy !
Thank you amflud!
I hope i didnt bump anyones head when i moved this from the main forum.
I thought i was posting in the Cantina.

Smoke from Texas.

There's nothing better than the love you get from a dog.

Reminds me of an old poem....

Rags
We called him "Rags." He was just a cur,
But twice, on the western Line,
That little old bunch of faithful fur
Had offered his life for mine.
And all that he got was bones and bread,
Or the leavings of soldier grub,
But he'd give his heart for a pat on the head,
Or a friendly tickle and rub.
And Rags got home with the regiment,
And then, in the breaking away-
Well, whether they stole him, or whether he went,
I am not prepared to say.
But we mustered out, some to beer and gruel,
And some to sherry and shad,
And I went back to the Sawbones School,
Where I still was an undergrad.
One day they took us budding M.D.s
To one of those institutes
Where they demonstrate every new disease
By means of bisected brutes.
They had one animal tacked and tied
And slit like a full-dressed fish,
With his vitals pumping away inside
As pleasant as one might wish.
I stopped to look like the rest, of course,
And the beast's eyes leveled mine,
His short tail thumped with a feeble force,
And he uttered a tender whine.
It was Rags, yes, Rags! who was martyred there,
Who was quartered and crucified,
And he whined that whine which is a doggish prayer
And he licked my hand-and died.
And I was no better in part nor whole
Than the gang I was found among,
And his innocent blood was on the soul
Which he blessed with his dying tongue.
Well! I've seen men go to courageous death
In the air, on sea, on land!
But only a dog would spend his breath
In a kiss for his murderer's hand.
And if there's no heaven for love like that,
For such four-legged fealty-well!
If I have any choice, I tell you flat,
I'll take my chance in hell.

What a cute little fellar. Dachshund right? We have a dachshund and love him to death. My wife got him and at first I wasn't too excited. Then he grew on me and become my little buddy. They seem to be such loving dogs! I understand that back problems are common in this breed(probably because of the long back). I'll keep you and your dog in my prayers. I know how important dogs can be. They just become one of the kids. I also have a Staffordshire bull terrier that is getting old. It hurts me to see him aging. Best of luck and take care!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, Dachshund.
All my best friends are Dachs or dach mix.
We have marbles here, his brother from another mother named bean, a 21 year old dach/chiuaua mix named cassady after the grateful dead song and addy her daughter (named after the stripper who did my 38th b-day party), a mix from cassady and a beagle. Cassady had her when she was around 10 years old.
We're thinking that his back problems may be a congenital problem inherited from his parents.
Thanks Guys!

white sage will be burning as soon as i finish posting - my thoughts and prayers for Marbles and you all too.

Smoke and Prayers going up. It's hard not to worry ourselves sick over our furry family members.

Let us know if there is anything else we can do.

Circle made - four directions - prayers sent - guidance asked to all - both family and Doctors - strength and health to Marbles -

Peace and Strength and intuition be with Marbles you and your family and the Doctors

Circle is open but never broken - Ah ho

Sorry to hear about this.

I've always had a canine friend and am happy to offer up smoke and prayers for yours.

Karda,
Mate, I am so sorry to see your little family member lying there in pain, my dogs are part of my family as well, the latest girl ( in my avitar ) has literally had thousands spent on her, but what do you do?...if these little friends are in our care, we must do our best for them...if they could..they would die for us...and that is immeasurable.
I see in your words, and the way Marbles is cared for in his comfort that you love that little guy as much as you can-good on you!
All the best to your family, and to little Marbles, get well soon marbles matey!

Smoke sent on Marbles....

The relationships between human and animal is inseparable.

This reminded me of war dogs. Always helpful but deserted.

:(

Thank you all for the support, my friends!
I want you to know it means a heckuva lot to us right now.
When i made this post this morning i was fighting anger, frustration and tears, I woke up feeling kinda stressed.
If i could bear his disease and all his pain, i would gladly do it, rather than have him go thru this.....and duncan, if i had to, i would also die to save his life. Our animals live and love unselfishly, the least we can do is the same for them.
