Back home in Jersey, I lived on about 60 acres of forested land running along Big timber creek, a fairly good sized creek ripe with catfish, bass, pickrel, turtles, snakes and tons of other wildlife. We didn't own the land except for an acre of it, but I had the run of it and I played groundskeeper on about 30 acres of county parkland. Trimming trails, removing trash, feeding the birds, it was basically my part time job without pay. I guided some canoe and kayak tours on the creek for a bit of cash but for the most part, it was a labor of love.
Moving to Tx was bittersweet for me. There's alot more opportunity for outdoor adventure here, but I moved into a crowded Houston suburb from a beautiful wilderness area that I really loved. I live about 10 feet from my neighbors on either side instead of a hundred yards and there's little wild for miles, or so I thought.......
today, I decided to take a little hike, ok, more like a 10-15 mile hike but anyway, I found a treasure out there in suburbia. As I walked along a gas pipeline, I came onto a civil engineering failure of truely massive proportions.
I guess it was some kind of dam. It had a large valve shed next to it that was equally destroyed.
I had to very carefully cross this mess but what I found on the other side was well worth the peril.
An abandoned park. Playground equipment, a snack stand, a very large pond that runs all through the park with fishing docks throughout and literally miles of overgrown trails.
Tons of wildlife.
Those turtles are about 15" in diameter and there were hundreds of them.
Plenty of fish, and more proof that people suck.
Yea, perfectly good catfish, not filleted, just killed for no good reason.
Here's a shot of the otherside of the pond.
And my blade of choice for this little excursion, a DT RC-3. Had to add some blade porn.
So, I'm a happy camper. I wish it were a bit closer to home but I'll make the best of it. Now that I found a little refuge, I'm sure some developer will start work on a new shopping mall or something there but I'll enjoy it while it lasts.
