Back home in Jersey, I lived on about 60 acres of forested land running along Big timber creek, a fairly good sized creek ripe with catfish, bass, pickrel, turtles, snakes and tons of other wildlife. We didn't own the land except for an acre of it, but I had the run of it and I played groundskeeper on about 30 acres of county parkland. Trimming trails, removing trash, feeding the birds, it was basically my part time job without pay. I guided some canoe and kayak tours on the creek for a bit of cash but for the most part, it was a labor of love.

Moving to Tx was bittersweet for me. There's alot more opportunity for outdoor adventure here, but I moved into a crowded Houston suburb from a beautiful wilderness area that I really loved. I live about 10 feet from my neighbors on either side instead of a hundred yards and there's little wild for miles, or so I thought.......

today, I decided to take a little hike, ok, more like a 10-15 mile hike but anyway, I found a treasure out there in suburbia. As I walked along a gas pipeline, I came onto a civil engineering failure of truely massive proportions.

I guess it was some kind of dam. It had a large valve shed next to it that was equally destroyed.

I had to very carefully cross this mess but what I found on the other side was well worth the peril.

An abandoned park. Playground equipment, a snack stand, a very large pond that runs all through the park with fishing docks throughout and literally miles of overgrown trails.

Tons of wildlife.

Those turtles are about 15" in diameter and there were hundreds of them.

Plenty of fish, and more proof that people suck.

Yea, perfectly good catfish, not filleted, just killed for no good reason.

Here's a shot of the otherside of the pond.

And my blade of choice for this little excursion, a DT RC-3. Had to add some blade porn.

So, I'm a happy camper. I wish it were a bit closer to home but I'll make the best of it. Now that I found a little refuge, I'm sure some developer will start work on a new shopping mall or something there but I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

What an awesome find! Sounds like you'll be making more trips back there. It's a shame to see someone just leave those fish there to die. What a waste of life. And food too. Absolutely inexcusable. Great pics nonetheless. Hope so see some more if you get to do some more exploring.

Oh yea, I'll be spending as much time there as my family life allows. Three little ones takes it's toll on your play time.

Thats awesome Guns. I grew up in suburbia and moved OOT and on 10 acres surrounded by endless miles of cows and farmland. Got a river and 2 creeks all within immediate access of my backyard deck. I've always gone to the woods my whole life but living in them is something that I thank the good Lord for everyday and pray that it never changes.

What you found was just proof that mother nature is still hard at work undoing what Man does to screw up her perfection as soon as the lawnmower runs out of gas. Enjoy it while it lasts, and take your kids next time so they can enjoy it too.

thanks for the refreshing post.

Between land that I own and other family I have about 120 acres to play on. Add a couple of 150 acre farms around that I have a nice area to stroll in. My boys are getting old enough (5&7) now where we will start camping and getting them out there more. My oldest likes to walk with me when we go scouting and stuff.

I used to have 7-8 miles of 4 wheeler trials then one family clear cut a farm then my aunt did the same thing to about 50 acres :( ruined my trails.

Glad you found somewhere to unwind a little!!

Great post shotgunner! It's amazing what can be found if we just take the time to look for it. I live in suburbs on long island NY but I am far enough east (away from the city) that every once in a while I stumble upon a new "wild" area that I had no idea was there, and that brings me immense enjoyment. It's funny how sometimes things are right under our noses and we wind up overlooking them or not exploring them. I need to go out and find some nice places around here again soon. Again, appreciate the post and pics.

Nice post Shotgunner11! It's great that you have found somewhere to enjoy nature. I have been fortunate for years to be in the country surrounded by wildlife. God bless America!

people do suck sometimes. TEXAS is beautiful though, if you look in the right places.

Say shotgunner, that suburb of Houston wouldn't be Katy would it?

Na Bro, Northwest. I'm in Spring, about a half a mile from Tomball.

I drive a half a mile in the direction of the city and it's traffic and people everywhere.

I go the other direction and it's two farms and a few ranches.

I'm right on the edge.

Looks like a great find. Sometimes the hidden treasures are right under your nose. I frequent a prairie reserve that is 2 km from my suburban house and if you go there early in the morning, you have 100 acres all by your lonesome!

Great find, although that really sucks about the fish. What a waste of food :( It would have been better if you caught who was doing that to the fish, that is an awful thing to do.

At least you find a place to get out to.

Ahh. just wondering. My girlfriend and her family are from there. She wants to take me down there this summer.

nice pics....yeah some pple really do suck big time. total disregard for things.
definitely enjoy it while it lasts!!!

maybe this summer or so we can all get together... I am about 2hrs north of ya,I dont mind a short drive....

I just had a talk with my neighbor about the park I found.

He's lived here for 30+ years and knows all the area history.

He said that when the new highway went through, they sold the land on either side of it and accidentally land locked the park. So unless one of the property owners decides to purchace the land, and in this economy, who would, it should be sitting idle for quite some time.

Good news for me.
