A lot different than it started.

Man, I've got a 12" pseudo cutlass/bowie/abomination in 1/4" stock just sitting on the floor under the workbench 'cause I can't stand to see it, but also can't stand to waste that much steel:barf: I had the bright idea of putting a thumb ramp on it before I was skilled enough to grind without a flat spine (just like yours, but you didn't jack it all the F up like mine). It has no ricasso left and the friggin' handle was too short by design already. Truly an eyesore. I'd just grind it and heat treat for the hell of it, but I also can't stand to waste 4 or 5 good belts on such a POS. All in favor of the POS/Mistake forum say AYE!:D

Larry, I'm sure you can salvage that one. Pain in the ass though isn't it, especially after the HT?

Have a good weekend all, I'm off to see my family for the first time in I don't know how many months...

I'm not gonna give up I'm Too cheap LOL I will turn it into a skewer before it goes in the trash heap LOL

I would like to see the abomination send me a pic of it or post it here.
have a good week end with the family

In the interest of making other makers feel better and for comic relief, I will try to get to taking a pic of it when I get back next week. However, it may destroy the camera, so I can't promise anything.:D

Later,

Dave

Here it is... The FUGLIEST... ARrrrrr. I'm a pirate with a POS, fear me!

And just as an ego balance, something I did that I like. (if anyone can tell me what the hell this wood is I'd be much obliged)

Happy grinding,

I'd say Amboyna, although it's not so red so possibly Carpathian elm...

Cheers rody

I bought this wood the same time as another block that looks more like the birdseye amboina - a lot redder. I think it's some kind of burl, but who knows... Thanks Rody.

Regards,

Dave

I think it is able to be saved bud. there is still a lot to work with there.
either grind it thinner to start the Ricasso over or make some modificaitons.

I am sending a PM on where my knife is now and a pic for an idea for ya on the other.

Larry

A lot different than it started. But I am happy with the results of how it turned out.
Thanks to all that offered advice and ideas. I did move the Front Pin up using a Dremel and a carbide bit.

LOL I think that a area for mistakes could be its own Foum area. LOL You could have jokes bloopers and Mistakes. I bet the mistakes foum would win hands down. Everyone going to see what the others messed up on, and learn from each others mistakes. or just point and laugh. :D

AYE!
so who's going to be the first one off the plank?:D and are we going to ask someone to sticky it?

BTW Larry nice knife! I had a Puma Hunters Pal with similar lines when I was younger, carried it everywhered when I was camping until some !@#$%^&^%$%^$#W in San Diego stole it out of my car. nobody who had not read this thread would ever know you messed up anything

Nice solo dude, that F sharp was truly innovative! :D:D:D

Hey Larry, that knife looks great! I don't think I'll be trying anything without a good bit of flat back for a while. I screwed around the other day free-handing without a work rest and it was not pleasant:eek:. It's great to save 'em from the scrap bin. Very good work getting it back. I really like that blade shape.

Regards,

Dave

Hey general you could easily make that into a stick tang if you didn't like the handle lenght. You could make it longet that way.

As for the op's knife that's a good looking knife I agree no one would know you had problems with it if they didn't see the thread.

Yeah, I think that's the only way to go with it now. Maybe I'll jam it into a prosthetic and call it the Davy Jones's Sword Leg:D

I may come back to it in a while, but right now it will take me longer to fix that one than to make a new one, so it'll be a back-burner project. It is a good excuse to try a stick tang though. Thanks for the idea.

Dave

This knife started out as something totaly different than it is now.

Lmao, you've discovered the secret of knife making, Larry!!!!!!! :D
