A Man's Knives!

That's a wonderful remembrance, Charlie. It's sad that he never got to meet the baby, and watch him grow a little. Those are great knives, and tell a great story. However, I have always said that knives are just knives, it's the memories attached to them that are the real treasure.

Thank you for sharing this.

Charlie. Such a heartwarming story and sad too. It is wonderful that the boy will have you to take care of his G's knives. Sorry for your loss.

There are so many words, customs, faces, recipes and things I remember and cherish from my grandparents! I give whatever I can to my grandkids in memory.
What is more important??[/QUOTE]

Nothing!!
Charlie, thanks for sharing the story and knives, very touching.

Very kind words everyone! This really is a family here on BF!

It is indeed the memories that are important, Glenn!

My condolences for the loss of your loved family member Charlie.
The knives will make a wonderful inheritance.
Looking at them has reminded of why I like traditional pocket knives.
As was mentioned before they are purpose built working mans knives. Nothing fancy, they are made to be used and so they have.
Simple ,practical, almost unremarkable. Therein lies their true beauty, their honesty, the makers and the owners legacy.
cheers.

What a cool life ! I can imagine all the beauty that lives on in his World of Making. Still blossoming, growing, changing with the seasons...creating everlasting impressions on so many souls. Returning to his emmanation

So sorry for the loss of your family member Charlie. Those knives are great and tell the story of a man that worked with hid hands and simple tools to create something that was enjoyed by so many. Thanks for posting my friend though a sad post it is also uplifting.

My deepest condolences, Charlie.

My own father who also died of cancer never got to meet his grandson; but he knew my son was on the way, and found the knowledge a source of happiness. I would guess that such was the case with G. RIP.

Sorry for your loss. The nice thing about having those tools is that you will remember him every time you pick one of those up or smell garlic

Thanks for sharing Charlie, those are very interesting knives. The second one from the top appears to have been a favorite by the wear it shows on blade and covers. They're very well cared for and to be cherished by the family since they were a part of his daily life.

Great story, Charlie.

As I get old(er) I find myself thinking about my legacy. What are my kids, friends, old co workers going to remember me by? I was always a hell raiser. A 1960's hot rodder. Viet Nam vet. Marine. Long haul truck driver. Biker. Retired from the Dept of Corrections.

It's been a long hard road, with a lot of stitches & broken bones. I'm not at the end of it yet, but when I get there, I'll be able to turn around, look back & say, "That was a hell of a ride!"

My hope is that after I'm gone, all the important things that I've gathered over the years, like my guns, knives, tools, etc; will be used & bring back fond memories.

Edit: Wow! I don't know what brought that on, but I ain't changing anything.:)

Good eyes, Arizona! You are right on - the wood is worn way below the rivets, which are polished quite smooth, and the blade is very worn, but properly sharpened along the way.
The spring/tang intersection is worn, and the snap is getting weak, but the knife is still quite usable.
