I had an outstanding day today. Met up with some good people. Looked at some great knives and some super great knives. Played with a Junglas. Best day that I have had in quite a while.
Ha!
The thing that's really made me consider is his point that in the coast guard you get use your training and your MOS everyday at your job. Where in the other services you usually only get to use it when your deployed
Ok, total geek moment here.
So, I'm sitting here on Blade Forums messing around and I look up and notice on the TV is the move Transformers 2. I give it a second only to catch a glimpse f Megan Fox, when I notice something uncanny.
Did anyone ever notice that ALL the transformers have terrible aim? Blowing up everything other than the intended target? They reminded me of Stormtroopers...can't shoot for shite, and never hits a darn thing!
I'm going to hurt tomorrow -- first armored SCA event in over 10 years today -- I suspect I used some muscles I forgot I had...
Then start preparing now for the regular Coastie physical fitness testing.

The requirement list are the MINIMUMS required to pass the semi-annual tests. And for the 500M swim, 12 minutes is the absolute MAXIMUM allowed time for a passing score.
Then if you want to be a rescue swimmer...

it's an old joke - couldn't resist.
My grandfather was in the USCG in WWII -- on a destroyer, doing convoy escort and sub hunting off the coast of Africa.
I actually considered the USCG at one point, probably should have gone that route instead of the US Navy - same fields, same schools (USCG uses Navy schools for some of their ratings), different mission.
best of luck to your buddy, and yourself if you opt to go that route.
I think you would like it. The handle was big and more comfortable than the one on an RTAK II and it chopped through a branch in short order.
I enlisted in the reserves in high school, did split training (boot camp between jr & sr years, "A" school as soon as I graduated), started drilling while in high school - and got an abbreviated version of the GI bill - while continuing to drill with the reserves in college.

Snark control module must be a burn out.
