A Monumental Experiment? To Carry the Same Knife Every Day for a Year

Haha, just re-read this thread and saw my post about carrying my new bermuda green peanut for the year. Well, that lasted about a week or two. Ended up carrying mainly my mini trapper, but rotating sometimes with my Case pen and a 15 I picked up mid year. Then came my two 14s in October, and those have been on a weekly rotation since, and probably will continue to be for a while. Curious how the original experiment worked out.

I really do like the corset shield. That's one of the reasons the 85 made the cut for next year.

But I'll admit, today when I grabbed the 78 and slipped it into my pocket, I had a moment where I was a little sentimental for all the times we shared. Probably too sentimental for just a pocket knife. But hey, here I am on New Years Eve posting about my knives on forum, so I guess I am a certified knife nut.

Happy New Years!

Never set out to do it, but I guess I carried my Alox Electrician every day this year. There were always one or two other knives in my RFP, and they got most of the attention, but I must have used the Electrician for something five or six times a week.

Henry - Even though the 78 smooth bone was with me throughout 2018, the alox electrician was my "knife of the year." On that one camping trip where the 78 was forgotten, the Electrician was the star, cracking open Coronas by the lake and cutting kids vegtables like a champ. It takes third place for the 2019 carry knife, just behind the stag 85 and my faithful 78.

Same here with my Vic Alox Cadet. It has been in my pocket or bag pretty much every day since I bought it. Too useful to leave behind.

You know what? I never even thought to count the Alox Cadet that's been in my left front pocket every single day for over two years. My preference for main edc blade can change from time to time, but the Cadet is always there. It's so slim that you hardly even notice it's there, so there's really no reason NOT to carry it.

I'm curious how L.H.S.'s experiment worked out. One of the reasons I started following BladeFroums was this particular thread that got me hooked.

I have carried the same 78 smooth white bone as L.H.S. every day in 2018 (save for 7 days - 6 when I was out of the country and 1 when I used an SAK while camping and just plain forgot the 78 in my tent).

Here's some pictures as 2018 progressed...

This knife has been on many, many adventures with me and will never leave my possession. I learned a lot about this pattern and about the adventures with having one "main" knife throughout the year. Of all the knives I accumulated in 2018, this 78 surpassed them all for my 2019 carry knife........ all but one....

For my daily carry in 2019, the 78 in smooth bone will be un-throned by the grail knife - the 85 in polished stag.

That's awesome!

I was a total failure in my experience, I carried it for a solid month, maybe a bit more. I actually ended up letting it go because I got a 78 in glitter gold at the Rendezvous. I probably should have kept it, but I don't really keep pattern duplicates.

However, I'm still glad to have attempted and made this thread if it got someone onto and excited about BladeForums!

Great post. I got an 85 and liked the shape a lot, which surprised me, but didn't keep it. I wonder if there are still any on dealer shelves...

Yours looks great!

That was how I planned to do my experiment. A main knife and others to complement it.

Ive had my trusty 98 texas camper on me for over a year.

Wow!!! That's a big EDC. I have over and pretty much only carry it camping, plus every now and then when I'm feeling froggy.

Sounds like I need to get a cadet. Of all the Swiss army knives I've had, I've never had or seen a cadet. But people seem to really like them.

I believe I carried my Victorinox Manager the entire year. It's on my key ring, so the only time I don't is if I stay home or go with my wife in her SUV when she's off work. If I take the keys to her car with me, I have a Victorinox Rally on that key ring. I have carried my Case Peanut every day in 2019 so far! :D

I'm planning to attempt a feat of will power this year. I will try to carry and use the same knife every day this year.

I got a single blade GEC #78 American Jack Spearpoint in Smooth White Bone in the last week of 2017. It came with some scratches on the blade and an almost proud tip, but after deciding not to return it and dropping the kick I have come to think it will be a great true every day carry. The spear blade is extremely utilitarian. It is a good size both for the hand and for typical use blade length. It is thin and easy to carry. The pull is smooth, snappy, and just right. The bone is very good looking and will age well.

I plan to start with January and see how it goes. If it's not enjoyable, I'll stop... but I think it'll be fun.

I will take a picture in hand in roughly the same position every day with the hopes of making an animation at the end of the experiment showing the patina and handle aging progression.

Here's a starter picture:

Let me know your thoughts!
I carried my first knife, an SAK Huntsman my dad gave me when I turned ten years old, until I was 17. It was the only folding knife I owned. I'd have carried it longer but it fell into the ocean by accident. (SAKs come from a landlocked country and are all anxious to experience salt water, no matter how bad it can be for them.)

After that one, I carried another SAK exclusively for years, adding a Tapio Wirkkala puukko from time to time, but relying on the SAK even then.

I'm a young 51 now and have dozens of knives and it is hard for me to pick one to carry for more than a couple of weeks at a time.

You'll enjoy the experience and learn everything there is to know about this knife of yours. Take a picture of it every day so you can see looking back how it changed.

I’m joining you with a copperhead 82. After carrying the sawcut red 77 since it came in the mail I can appreciate this line of thinking.

this is one of those experiments that is so harmful to the participants that they have to end it early as a matter of medical ethics. one knife for a year?! absurd!
