I just recently was able to get ahold of this fine, older S&W Model 34 Kit Gun. Of course, it's a .22, with a 4" barrel. This is my idea of a perfect little revolver to take along on a day hike, where it's allowed!

I have something similiar but it is a high standard 9 shot revolver with a 6" barrel,I purchased at a pawn shop for $65 and it shoots straigt and true.

Taurus also makes a fine 9 shot .22lr or a 8 shot .22 mag revolver. You can get them with 4 in barrels or 5 in but those are harder to come by.

I'm in black bear/cat country, so I want at least a .357! My choice is also one of the "kit guns".....S&W 360SC, scandium/titanium, 3 1/4" bbl. Thing only weighs 11 ounces!!!

I had one of those. It was the "Double Nine". Not very pretty but a lot of fun. The one I had came with the fake stag grips. One corner was broke off and much of the gun was painted as opposed to blued steel.
I've seen 'em at the local pawn shops and at G&K shows but I haven't picked another one up yet. One of these days I'll get another.

reconranger,

I have mountain lions, wolves and large hogs that frequent my property in Texas. I have a very good Ruger Flattop .44 and a S&W Model 22-4 to take care of such. I understand what it takes to handle dangerous game. What I'm talking about here is something to handle varmints and recalcitrant rattlesnakes when I'm out with my wife and grandkids.

:D great lil' pistol for farting around while camping /fishing...it is my trail gun while it is only a 22 caliber and I do own larger calibers revolvers &semi auto...my pistol depends on where I am going...if fishing it is just for snakes/ varmits/ or other non-friendly folks you bump into on river banks or trekking up creek channels...my HS 22 has brown plastic type grip, but the blueing on the gun is tough as nails and it has it's trail scars from being carried into some crazy location but it has yet to let me down.I am very pleased with it and the value. I just prefer packing a revolver over a semi-auto pistol for some reason and if I run across another HR revolver I would not hesitate to buy another if the $ was right !!

My grandpa used to have one just like that. It was always my favorite to shoot when I was a kid, it was really accurate. That should make a nice trail gun, and could put some little critters in the pot if need be.

Nice looking gun Ron, I've been looking into getting a .22 pistol for some time now, and to run across one like that would be a nice find.

I've got a Taurus clone in stainless steel, the Model 84. Nice .22 revolver but way too heavy to pack regularly. For that weight, I'd rather take a Glock 36 in .45 ACP.

batosai117,

I found mine on the Smith & Wesson Forum for sale. I owned one before, but let it get away from me in a trade. They're not cheap, but they're worth it, in my opinion.

CSG, if I need something bigger than my Kit Gun, I'll take my Model 22-4 .45ACP. I'm talking about something to use, as I stated before, for snakes and other small varmints, without waking up the countryside. I have nothing against medium and large-bore handguns...I shoot them all the time! But the original concept of what Smith & Wesson had in mind for a "Kit Gun" still holds true.

I've got one very similar, but its a .32. Man its sweet!

I have owned several "kit guns" in .22 over the years, and they are great! Good concept, J-frame and light, but with barrels longer than the 2" snubbies.

As I recall, last time I looked at the S&W site, a lot of the kit guns from the past are now gone.

I think I have to settle on a marlin papoose for my woods gun, not shabby but I would love to be allowed to carry a .22 handgun. (The noise alone would probably deter a lot of predators. I hope!)

I don't recall ever feeling the need to "dispatch" snakes and varmints on the trail but I have shot a few pack rats in our garage with it (snake shot) and a couple of otherwise harmless snakes that were tangling with our cats.

tony you and i have the same HS...the sentinal right? mine is hard chrome and cherry...i love it...4 inch barrel and shoots like a champ. i carry stingers in it and it loves them.

I use a Ruger Single Six for the trail gun purpose.
For larger animals, I tend to carry a rifle, so don't need the pistol to be a major caliber piece.

Ron53 - beautiful S&W.

I'm looking at getting a Ruger Bearcat eventually. I love my S&W Model 17, but it's a bit big top throw in a pack. The Ruger Bearcat would also be good to teach my boys on when they are old enough.
