A new knife for a new home?

I found myself thinking what could be, a bizarre thought. One could say a treasonous thought.

All my life, my main pocket knife has been either a stockman or a peanut. These two gives have done the bulk of what knife duties I've performed outside of the kitchen. Oh yeah, I've carried a SAK or an Opinel, sometimes, and my Sardinian resolza has seen it's share of stuff. But for the most part, the stockman and peanut has been my mainstays.

But now, in the white dwarf stage of my life, and with the 98% certainty that I am moving to Texas, I find myself wondering if a 'new' knife is in order. I'm sure my peanut will do well at the BBQ, or fishing some quiet creeks or stretches of the Guadalupe river.

But…it's Texas. There's a certain something that comes with that. I won't be adapting a Stetson over my old khaki bucket hat, nor will I be abandoning my Keen's for boots. But I guess I'm thinking of maybe a change in cutlery may be in order. It's Texas.

So, I find myself wondering about a small Texas jack.

I may have to weigh a Texas jack against a peanut. I mean, just how many ounces difference can there be, or should the old retired grand high muckba just stick tout proudly with the peanut in the land of the Lone Star flag?
:D

The medium Texas Jack from Case, older ones, look really nice in red bone.

Another option to weigh is a Texas Toothpick.

I don't know...being Texas and all I think the 92 pattern large Texas jack is a bit more appropriate.

It's what....half an inch difference?:D

Not a bad idea Carl. I have made it something of a habit of buying a new knife when a major change in my life occurs. A move to Texas would certainly qualify.

And a small Texas Jack is just plain cool. Who really needs an excuse to get one of those little candies? 😊

Speaking of knives for major life changes that reminds me of my wedding knife purchased almost 3 years ago. It's a wonder how elegantly it has aged during it's tenure of fishing trips, edc, and whatnot.

New knives are a chance to build a masterpiece.

Carl, as you well know, we Texans carry everything from peanuts to large stockman down here! Bring along whatever suits you, and feel right at home, sir! Once you're here and settled, maybe a few of us Texas forumites (is that a real word?!?) can have a BBQ together!

Best Regards,
Ron

If you carry a Bowie you won't have to worry about the whole opening it up thing and you should fit right in. :)

Otherwise I'd say a stockman should serve you well there.

Maybe a Texas Jack to replace the peanut and a bigger stockman than you're carrying now. Definitely you should take the opportunity to buy at least one new knife.

What you need Carl, is one of them there Booey Knives! ;)

Case Texas Jack is a great knife in my opinion, a bit more for old hands to hang onto :) There's also the GEC Yellow Rose series of course ;)

Case's Small Texas Jack in Amber Bone CV is a nice knife. However, with the squared bolsters it's less pocket friendly than the rounded bolster Peanut.

I would suggest the '087 Jack pattern, but unfortunately it is not offered in CV nor bone handles currently (unless you want a Ford or John Deere logo on it).

Maybe a GEC 66 or 68, though as I recall you have problems opening knives recently and are looking for softer pulls than GEC is known for.

I have heard that the Trapper is king in Texas. Maybe a Case mini or a Moore Maker 3 7/8.

Jim

If I recall corrctly, please forgive me if I do not :), I seem to remember you having a one in one out philosophy. If so, I guess you have to ask if you are willing to let one go. Or, of course ,you could always just add one more to the fold to mark the move in your cutlery timeline. :D

Case Sowbelly Stockman or a stockman is where I would look. The Tx Jack is a fine knife, but I think a stockman is the way to go imo.

Good luck with the move

As far as the Stetson and boots... Careful, I said the same thing about my ball cap and sandals. Now, boots are my main footware and a while I don't wear a Stetson, the ball cap sits in the closet. If you do get a Stetson you have to share a pic for us. :D

All good suggestions. Ya just need to remember everything is bigger in Texas....including knife collections. So get one of each!

Come on down and carry what ever you want. If you need a reason to buy a Texas Jack, then, heck, do it. But most folks down here tend to carry larger knives like large trappers and you still see a lot of buck 110's worn on belts. Where are you going to be located?

Oddly enough, Bowie knives are illegal in Texas. No fixed blade over 5.5 inches.

Popular in Texas:Yellow handles, trappers, stockmen, lockbacks.
Case, Old Timer,
Moore Maker (because folks think they're made in Texas)

Not so popular: Camillus & Kutmaster (possibly because of the federal shields)

I'd recommend a Case mini-trapperlock in yellow, except San Antonio has a ban on locking blades under 5.5 inches. So, mini-trapper? They can be pinched open, so that might be a nice choice, and you could get one with a wharncliffe.

Whatever you choose, welcome to the Lone Star State!
