a non-threatening EDC?

Carry the most outrageous knife you can legally carry and provoke dialog. Educate! Do we REALLY give a damn if someone is scared of our Leek? Hell NO! We secretly thrill at their idiocy and consider them inferior for not carrying a knife!
At what point do we draw the line between 'useful' and "acceptable to sheeple'?
At what point do we finish the downgrading of what we have a right to carry as not to draw comment?
If we bow to this pressure because we are uncomfortable with confrontation to the point carrying of vanishingly small Nerf tools, we have lost.
"Is that legal?" Why yes it is. Glad you asked. Know the knife laws for your state and city.
"Why do you carry that? What are you going to kill?" I carry it because it is a useful tool that been with mankind since the dawn of concious thought. It evolved from the tooth and claw through the sharp flake of stone to the high-tech tool you see before you today. Why don't YOU carry one?
Which brings me to the point, if you will. We each know many sheeple. Give them the unexpected gift. Everyone will be glad you did.

I'll put in another vote for a nice traditional looking slipjoint. Go with something from a manufacturer like Queen and you get a traditional looking, "safe", knife with a modern tool steel. If a small traditional knife such as a canoe with bone handles scares off someone, and you aren't doing anything illegal, just forget about them.

1. SAK of any kind
2. Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian w/yellow handle
3. Spyderco Calypso, Jr.

I'd say any 'traditional' pocket knife - there are lots of choices. One or more blades. Locking or not. And many choices of natural hanlde material that would be 'classy' for the office: bone, wood, stone, horn...

Swiss Army Knife is a good choice too. Everyone knows what they are, and the red-handles are definitely non-threatening (unless you've met OJ on a bad day).

Or get a different job. I doubt truck drivers, wilderness guides, or roughnecks have to worry about which pocketknife will match their office costume. :)

Best Wishes,
-Bob

What constitutes your daily cutting chores? If you need to pierce through material, then a blade with a point is important. If you trim and cut things, like leather on a bench, then a wharncliffe is what's required. Do you chance hitting hard material? Then an adqequate guard it required. Basically, let your chores be the deciding factor, not what appears threatening or not threatening in someone else's eyes. Otherwise, you'll chance having an EDC that does not suit your requirements.

No matter what you choose, some persons will see it as dangerous. At the same time minimising that number can be useful. The more comfortable you are with taking it out and using it the less attention it will draw, so get something that suits you.
I have had only mild reactions to a Fallkniven U2 or to a Jeff Angelo Fluted Folder.

SS Cricket, small, shiney, unusual non knife look, yet cuts like a razor.
Definately my sheeple knife of choice

Conversely, the most threatening EDC folder, non-auto, would be something with a metal skeletonized handle or black skeletonized handle and black blade. No lanyard, and if a sheath is used, synthetic is more frightening than leather.

"F" people. Pocket folders are legal and a valued tool. I carry a D2 Mini grip at work and a S30V full size on the weekends. Sure, people look and frown at the mall when I break it out, but when something needs cut, it needs cut. I love being out to dinner at a steak house and having my wife ask me for my knife. It's who I am and what makes me me. People come to me when something needs cutting. And so it will always be.

I carry a benchmade monochrome and don't get as many stares as my Spyderco
Endura!!!

Stay away from serrated edges. It screams weapon.

I was on a tiny island in the Indian ocean 2 days ago. Possibly one of the worlds most remote places. I was hanging with the environmental technician of a major oil company for the day and we were walking the beach cleaning up debris from passing ships. (In moments like that I always think of my daily rate and chuckle to myself - some sucker is paying me for this..heh heh. But I digress).

Buck 110's, Leathermans and the occasional Spydie are the norm at this place. We found some large sheets of plastic that needed cutting to smaller sizes for carrying out so I whipped out my Native and started slicing away.

'What are you carrying that dagger for?' asked one of the shiny bum management types who were visiting for the day from head office - sheesh

Don't let the sheeple dictate what you should carry. Carry what's legal in your area. I've had people make comments about my leatherman micra and squirt.

Cries in the wilderness.... Notice how our pleas for non-compliance to the will of the sheeple go ignored? I say the attitudes of our comrads in BF are already slipping to the Dark Side of Knife Fear. Soon we'll be seeing posts like 'The Nerfnife, Threat or Menace?', 'The Silicon Chip Chopper. Too Scary?' or 'Paper, the Sharpest Edge in the Workplace'.
By supporting the fear, y'all are allowing 'them' to win, just a little here and there to the point of landslide. I guess BF has all types and shades of knife lovers and blade carriers.
This attitude of trying to not scare sheeple and trying to be as invisible as possible makes me feel like you think we are doing something bad. No. We are within our legal rights to carry the knife we want, even if it is exactly within the letter of the law, verging on question and seemingly inviting comment. That is why we have laws AND can question those laws we feel are unjust. Maybe it IS rude and 'in your face' to use a knife that frightens some people and expect them to get over it just because it is legal. I will not apologize for being me though. I can and will take care of myself and be responsible for my actions. It's just not my business what other people think of me. I don't need to take ownership of their worries. I have enough of my own.
BTW I don't carry an 'edged tool' or a 'bladed tool' or a 'utility blade'. I carry and use a KNIFE.

Do I carry a non-threatening knife -- rather knives? Yes. Why?

I want to keep my SOCFK as sharp as possible and I don't feel the need to carry another full-sized knife. So I keep a Kershaw Scallion or Chive clipped on me somewhere.

I also keep a V'nox (usually a Tinker) in my left pocket in case I need to loan a knife -- not only do I not worry if that one gets broken, it has tools in case what someone really needs is a screwdriver or cap lifter.

90 percent of people aren't going to care much about either of those. The other 10 percent, there's no hope for.

Of course they'd be more shocked by the 1911 under my shirt, but am I carrying it to make them comfortable? No, it's to make me comfortable. Each of the knives in my EDC has been thought out and is on me for a reason, it just so happens that two of them are fairly non-threatening.

Indeed, we don't have to dictate what knife we carry by the sheeple, i just think its "smart" to carry along your big knife a small unobtrusive, innocent looking knife. My EDC, today, because going out of town, was a Benchmade Nimravus that i carry strong side IWB behind the hip, a Spyderco Civilian that i carry front left in a horizontal kydex sheath and a Spyderco SS cricket on my keychain. I was in the hospital today to visit my sick grandmother and had to cut the string around the flowers i brought, while the doctor, the headnurse, and a assisent doctor where in the room. Guess wich one i took to cut the string with. U have to "blend in the crowd" and people should look at u as non threat. They should only realise that you are armed the minute you deploy the big knife in a life or death situation. It is not necessary to show your assets untill u need them. :)

I carry a SOG Sculptura for use around the office. I usually have an 806D2, Ritter Grip or Kershaw Avalanche carried IWB though. A couple people at work know what I carry but they're gun/knife nuts just like me.

The EDC that I carry most is a Spyderco Native. Very sheeple friendly with a blade just under 3" but cuts like a bigger knife and you can find one for around $50 with the S30V blade. :)

Another plug for the native...
