I sold a knife, buyer tried to PayPal me the money. I got this email for PP. I haven't ever seen anything like this before. I will sit tight and not ship the knife until I hear from them but was just wondering if you guys have ever had a similar thing happen to you? Some of the details have been changed to protect the innocent but this is the meat of what PP sent me.

Hello Robert Thomason,

Curly Howard just sent you money with PayPal. To help protect you, we're reviewing this payment.

To know if your item is covered, check the 'Seller Protection' section of the 'Transaction Details' page and ensure that it states 'Eligible'.

You shouldn't ship the item until we let you know that the payment has cleared. We'll send you an email when we complete the review or you can check the Transaction History tab of your PayPal account.

It's legit. I had the same thing happen to me one time when I sold a knife and received a PayPal payment from a member in a country in southeast Asia: some combination of the person's location, payment method, transaction history, etc. must have caused it to be flagged by PayPal's suspicious transaction algorithm (e.g., as a possible fraudulent transaction).

It's nothing to worry about. In my case, I got an email from PayPal almost exactly 24 hours later saying that the transaction had been cleared, and the hold on the funds was removed. Chances are the exact same will happen in this case.

I'm waiting on something like this right now. My case is a transaction from someone in Australia who is sending me a Paypal "E-check". I don't even understand what means, except that it will take a few days to clear, and I'm fine with waiting.

I just sold something on fleabay and the buyer also did one of those Echeck things (who knew such oddities existed??) and it took almost 5 days to clear. I did wait to ship until it cleared and I kept the buyer informed of why I was waiting and when I shipped it. Anyway, it seems legit.

Just to avoid any confusion, the delay for a PayPal eCheck to clear and the delay for PayPal review are two different things. The former can take quite a while, especially if it's a cross-border transaction. Before I got a Gold Membership here, I sold a few knives I wasn't using on eBay and had a guy from Canada pay me via eCheck for one of them. It took nearly two weeks for it to clear. The latter is an internal PayPal review, and always takes 24 hours at most.

Thanks, Neuron. I figured it would be OK since the buyer has a good reputation here. We will probably be able to complete the deal in 24 hours.

Thomason, what a coincidence, I used to live in Rooster Poot, AR and knew Curly Howard quite well.

Any time something fishy comes up with paypal you can call their 800#
They have always been polite and followed through until I was satisfied.
I have never been disappointed with their explanations and results.

This way you get to talk to a human who finds out what is going on instead of an automated computer response.

Paypal completed their review in about 24 hours and emailed me that everything was OK. Just like they said they were going to do. All is well. Thanks for the responses.
