A Pet Peeve

I see 'baught' here in Blade Forums, instead of bought.

Than, instead of then.

I was confused with vice and vise, but vise seems to be the American version of the English.

" Grammer school " ??? Sadly they don't teach grammer in schools [and not much else] .Check you local school district . My pet peeve is "co-conspirator" which is so often used it's now in the dictionary even though the proper term is just "conspirator"...I guess I should add that, for those who never went to "grammer school" it's spelled GRAMMAR !!

I can hear the future at Blade 2012:

"Well, his knives are absolutely abominable but he is positively Lowthian in his grammatical prowess. He possesses a veritable Churchillian rhetoric. I shall definitely be adding him to my collection this year." :D

You know Fitzo, that would be actually pretty pleasant. I imagine it more to be something like:

"OMG Dood! Look @ 'dis old geezerz knifes! Fuq'n Rad!"

Let's not even get started on misuse which coins new turns of phrase. I find that sales and marketing types tend to do this the most. I often wonder if it's cooincidental that these guys seemed to be the ones at the frat parties I never went to. :jerkit:

My two favorite gems from the business world:

"Incentivize"
"Pre-planning"

*sigh*

Here's a little story about grammar: :D

A mother took her young son to a dude ranch for vacation.
The first time they went walking around, the little boy said to his mother,
"Mom, look at them there bowlegged cowboys!"

The mother was appalled at his English, and said, "Young man, starting today, you're going to study Shakespeare until you can speak correctly!"

Well, the next day they went for a walk, and the boy said to his mother,

"Mother, what manner of men are these,
Who wear their pants in parentheses?"

I can't say as I would disagree with you, deker. The electronic BBS, txt msgn and Red Bull shall all be noted eventually as significant accelerants to linguistic drift. That said, "Corp-speak" and "Poli-speak" are also much at fault. One example that grates on me is the relatively recent word "efforting". The phrase "pre-driven automobile" is another.

I enjoy, face to face conversation, this is where humans use the nuance of body language and gesture. With a nod of your head or motion of your hand, a great deal can be related.

We do not have this option when conversing on line. I can not see when someone is LtAO. This makes the usage of proper punctuation important.

The ad, about the dropped calls on your cell phone, comes to mind here.
Where one caller does not hear what the other is saying and their imagination runs a muck. [I love that word]
Humans need subtlety and nuance in their conversation. It's how we extract the most from our encounters with each other.

May I finish by saying blah blah blah, yada yada yada, Fred

HOLY CRAP! I'm out trying to grind the perfect swedge and come back to find the Punctuation Police! I'll call Fred's "blah blah blah, yada yada yada" and raise it a "yackety schmackety":D s

But seriously, I agree some folks are just getting lazy wit da language, knowwhutImean Verne :)

Here's one that kind of "wierds me out".

It seems things have changed with some words since I was in school and then working in an office because now it seems the word "data" is handled differently.

We used to say, "Our data is reliable," for instance. Now they say, "Our data are reliable."

I looked it up in my old AP style book and it was a rare area of ambiguity. I don't know, it just sounds weird to me.

sorry guys thats me you all are talkign aobut

doesnt help that i type like i think just gettign it out
grammer never was a stronge point of mine i'm better to talk to tho

How bout this i'll work on it.

We used to say, "Our data is reliable," for instance. Now they say, "Our data are reliable."

Well, technically, a single item of data is a datum. Data refers to a collection of datum. That said, people don't use the word "datum", they use the word "data". This leads to a lot of confusion. I know it's not the "right" way, but I personally go with the "Our data is reliable" version. If anybody wants to pick a fight about it, I'll point out that whle "data" refers to a collection, it is used in a singular context due to the fact that "data" refers itself to the collection, not the members thereof....or something ;)

can i pick a fight with you about it just so you can prove it to the others?? :D ill pick a fight with you on it if it teaches other people even tho i agree with you fully on the matter.

all I can say deker is I wish I had a stick long enough to whack you with.
because of you I now have to stop posting so I won't offend you :o
I was one of the ones that fell through the cracks of learning
in the 50's because of teachers that thought they were and were not..
but what I lack in spelling I excelled in other ways..I hope you do too some day to two..take your pick

Naw I won't stop posting Maybe it will cause a bit of humility to go around..maybe

My dad is totally illiterate, he dropped out to go to work to help his family so now He pays for it in ways like this..
in comparison to him I'm a scholar .. with the help with spell check :o :)
but you'd never see me put him down for it, he's just about the smartest man over all that
I've ever known.. there are guys that grammar is all they Know, I wonder who's the smartest?

fred this is why I'm in trouble on here so much I can't type and,, no one can see me grit my teath :D :D :D or or rrrr  :p :D

I personally would be very sad if we caused so much as one person to feel embarassed to post because of their spelling or how well they could write a sentence.

What if that person knew a better way to do something? As long as I am able to understand what the person is saying, I want that information. And I am grateful, for maybe it was a terrible and embarassing experience for the person. Perhaps that person was willing to suffer some kind of shame for poor spelling and grammar, because he thought it important to share.

Important because he feels us his brother, and we are important to him.

Proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation are all well and good, but not nearly as important as what the person has to say.

Just my .02.

GEEEEEH!!!! What a bbunch of Scana"SSSSSS. HEHEHEHEHEE!!! Fatzo's is the Biggest too or is two?? In his case it is 3TH??? Or is it Turd????

Sorry Mike, gotta correct y'all:
Just my $0.02 worth.....(smile)

Seriously, deker and others make good points....and as a guy with 30+ years as a marketing guy..and one of the most technically oriented, analytical, contract managing folks in an office of some of the finest "marketeers" I have ever had the pleasure of working with (sorry about ending with a preposition), must say, there are fine ideas that may not be expressed, if we must be sucsinct (sp) in our wordage and punctuation.
May we add the appropriate utilization of the the words "effect" and "affect" to the list?
I'll try to do better, but fat fingers on the keyboard are definitely a problem...
Thanks Guys, this is a Neat Thread....posted on by a bunch of Good Guys in the Knifemaking Community!!!!
