A Pet Peeve

IG, I am not sure what you just posted....Heck, remember I only ride a Bic Lighter......
Or put it my way,"IG, Huh?"
Also, you forgot the "h" in thurd....third.....I think I misspelled something......Spellcheck...how do you get that to function on your computer?????

....May we add the appropriate utilization of the the words "effect" and "affect" to the list?

This is an interesting explanation of the differences:

"Affect1 and effect, each both noun and verb, share the sense of “influence,” and because of their similarity in pronunciation are sometimes confused in writing. As a verb affect1 means “to act on” or “to move” (His words affected the crowd so deeply that many wept); affect2 means “to pretend” or “to assume” (new students affecting a nonchalance they didn't feel). The verb effect means “to bring about, accomplish”: Her administration effected radical changes. The noun effect means “result, consequence”: the serious effects of the oil spill. The noun affect1 pronounced with the stress on the first syllable, is a technical term in psychology and psychiatry. Affect2 is not used as a noun."

Affect1 and affect2 are pronunciation differences.

Source is the Dictionary.com definition of "affect".

all I can say deker is I wish I had a stick long enough to whack you with.
because of you I now have to stop posting so I won't offend you :o

Don't worry Dan, I'm almost impossible to actually offend. :D In all seriouslness though, my intent wasn't to shame anybody or to make anybody feel badly enough to not post. My post was simply for me to stand up and rant for a second. I'm bothered by this on some days more than others. I got it off of my chest and I feel much better now. :) My original post was more directed towards folks who DO know better, but are just lazy about it. You ever notice how different posts from the same person sometimes look like they were written by two different people?

I was one of the ones that fell through the cracks of learning
in the 50's because of teachers that thought they were and were not..
but what I lack in spelling I excelled in other ways..I hope you do too some day to two..take your pick

Hey, if there's ever a post about people who suck at math, I'll proudly stand up and take my beating. I fell through the cracks in school in math class, so I understand what you're saying.

My dad is totally illiterate, he dropped out to go to work to help his family so now He pays for it in ways like this..
in comparison to him I'm a scholar .. with the help with spell check :o :)
but you'd never see me put him down for it, he's just about the smartest man over all that
I've ever known.. there are guys that grammar is all they Know, I wonder who's the smartest?

There are different types of "smart". One of the most smart guys I know has an 8th grade education. That "limitation" has never held him back. He's a very accomplished woodworker, blacksmith, machinist, ham radio operator, amateur astronomer, bee keeper, teacher, and all around great guy.

I'm a bit concerned about the youth of today though (says the old man...at 30 years of age...). By and in large, they have more opportunities for learning than any generation before them, but those opportunities are being squandered. Bad parents are, in my opinion, the root cause of it, and the "good parents" who are overprotective to the point of smothering are just as much at fault as the drunk, drugged out, worthless parents who just don't give a crap. Both groups, for their various reasons, expect TV, video games, and the Internet to babysit their children. I had TV and video games as a kid as well, but we still went outside, played, got dirty, and *gasp* sometimes got HURT! I'm not damaged, the boogyman didn't snatch me off of the street corner while I waited for the school bus, I played with BB guns, I did some stupid things as a kid, but I'd like to think I've turned out as a decent human being. I can see I'm straying a bit far from the original topic into an actual sore spot for me, so I'll shut up now. :D

In any event, don't quit posting, no matter how poor your grammar and spelling are, just because some two-bit, wannabe knifemaker whined at you. That would just be silly. :)

"When in Rome", you know! :) I am frequently and intentionally guilty of that, too. I believe it is called "writing to your audience". Sometimes it is all one can do. :o

By way of example, when one converses with IG the vulgate is distinctly preferable to the Queen's English. Indeed, it may well be argued mandatory. :D

Well, you do what you have to do to make sense to a Portagee! ;)

I couldn't agree more. :D

No intent of being some condescending prick, but it's awfully frustrating when you have to get out your decoder glasses to read somebody's post.

I like the use of the word "steward," in this thread. Knife makers that hang out online are indeed a viewing window into the community as a whole. It would be great if people didn't see a bunch of retarded apes. ;)

I get flack at work like, "dumb it down college boy, I'm not following you." Which is fine and all... I see no need to use a big, fancy $5 word when a simple one will do. HOWEVER, why not articulate yourself as well as you can?

Just the other day, a guy was talking and said, "I could care less about xyz..."

To which I said, "Really? Just HOW MUCH LESS could you care? Because personally, I could NOT care less, since I don't give a fukk."

;) :D

I think it's important for anyone to strive to speak and write well. (not 'good') How you express yourself to others, especially (not 'expecially') when meeting someone for the first time, will create that first impression. First impressions are very difficult to change. However, most of the members on this forum are not professional speakers or professional writers. Most of us are everyday working people, that are not required to speak or write well in our daily lives. Thus, the inaccuracies that I see in this type of a communicative setting do not really bother me too much.

I write technical papers and speak for a living, so it is imperative that I have a good grasp of language and writing, as well as, communication. If I make a mistake in a letter or during a speaking engagement, it can effect my company negatively. One word in the wrong place or a punctuation incorrectly used could lead to legal issues for myself and/or my company. On this forum, these issues are not nearly as important though.

Actually the misuse of punctuation, grammer and incorrect spellings will tell you a lot about the colorful personalities of our friends on this forum. Let's enjoy our differences and celebrate them!

Now, for my pet peeve:
My pet peeve is newspapers and magazine articles! For God's sake, they ARE professional writers! They also have proof readers, and yet the number of grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors is appalling.

Oh that's a good one!

It's especially rich when these errors show up in "Hit Pieces" designed to detail someone's "verbal slips" or otherwise infer that they are stupid.

Here are two actual signs that I saw last week while driving here in Albuquerque. Both were put up by our city government:

You drink, you drive, you loose.

Right lane closed ahead. Expect dalays.

Albuquergue has to be one of the weirdest spellings I have ever seen. It just doesn't look like it is correct, but it is! It's kind of .......quirky!

what's wrong with that?
when I drink I get pretty Loose too ;) :D

Part of the problem today is the fact that they spend so much time on parts of speech and whatnot that they forget that spelling is also important. Case in point, last semester we spent a whole 2 weeks on identifying gerunds, participles, and infinitives. How many of you know what those are without looking them up? More importantly, how many of you need to know what they are to use them correctly?
