A pleasant surprise this morning.

Nobody here willing to be honest?

Those slabs are not worthy of the Custom Shop. Compared to the first one (which is excellent, I have one just like it) the wood looks like bleached out crapwood.

Whatever it is, it shouldn't be called KOA.

The Plumber needs to send it back.

:thumbdn:

Agree that is not a good piece of wood and the CS should not have sent that out!!! Especially to Dave who is a preferred customer or should be be!

Here is a 112 that I put KOA on. This is what Dave's knife should look like

The problem is that flatlanders custom shop seems to be closed. :(

That's a beautiful piece of wood Gordon!

I actually like the wood in my older one better than this one. I sorta wish I'd gone with the rivets also, but since I already had one with them, I didn't. They're both nice, just different.

I see BG-42 written on your "older" one and the wood like you said looks nicer on the one you already had. So may I ask what makes this new knife a custom. Surely not just the abscence of rivets. JUST WONDERING

Seems that the depth of field on your camera caught the rivet one in clear focus and the forward one is slightly soft. Would be nice to see the custom in sharp focus.

I see custom stamped on the tang of the riveted knife. Am I missing something or is it that they are both customs and the one with no rivets is your new custom one?? Also I see Bos with his trademark flame on the new one along with S30V, that is a big plus. But unless I understand wrong or thinking of something else is not BG-42 superior over S30V in hardness at least. What are all the differences between the new (no rivet one) and the one with BG-42 and rivets??

Simply the fact that they both came out of Buck's custom shop. The one with the rivets and BG-42 is an older offering, the S30V model just came.

Here's three of mine that came out of flatlander1963's "custom shop".

WOW Dave, those flatlander customs are fantastic! Thats whats great about wood, though, each is different, and you never know what your gonna get! I sure am glad we all dont like the same type of woman ;) LOL I like both of your KOA's but for different reasons. They are both beautiful and unique in their own way. I am sure Buck being as big as they are doesnt go through and find the choicest pieces of wood, or for that matter even know what each customer prefers. A smaller "custom shop" that produces far fewer knives, probably has tighter control than a larger company. (IMHO) Just my .02 worth ;) I'll take either one LOL ;)

Now both of the larger Bucks here have beautiful scales. What is the center one. Is that blade a modified blade from a traditional Buck knife or is it I have never seen this type of Buck?? Or is it a buck at all? I like them all but if you want to give me one I will take the top one. :D :p

The center knife is a Buck 701 that Gordon rehandled using smooth buffalo horn. It's a great knife and is one that I carry much of the time. If you want the top one, you will have to contact my heirs after I kick the bucket. Those are three that I'll never part with as long as I'm alive and kickin'.:D

The center knife is a Buck 701 Mustang. It came out in the early 80's along with several others smaller versions with the intent to replace Camillus made 300 series stockman and its siblings. Although the 700 series was a superior knife it didn't catch on and was eventually canceled.

Dave gave me a elk handled 701 so I rehandled my 701 with smooth buffalo and gave it to him. Btw, that is a natural white mark in the horn but kind of gives it a unusual perspective.

Dave, thanks for the kind words and showing off my work again. gw

I know that sometimes your plate gets too full to do what you enjoy, and sometimes you just get burned out. What ever the case just enjoy life, and if ever you decide to do more custom work put me on the waiting list. You do some beautiful and detailed work.

It is true I haven't rehandled any knives in well over a year or more. But I haven't officially called it quits on the hobby for sure.
I hope that whatever the reason you are not doing your custom work gets better. I know sometimes your plate seems too full and sometimes you just get burned out. Whenever you decide to do more custom work please put me on your waiting list. You certainly do some beautiful and detailed work.

Beautiful work Gordon. I see your point now. By comparison your Koa is in an entirely different league.

Yes, and we should expect excellence from Buck, especially the Custom Shop.......not crappy washed-out wood.

Somebody said:

That's totally bogus. They damned well know that we all expect especially good wood in a Custom. In the Custom Shop all components should be chosen for excellence. The crap wood on Plumber's 110 should have been rejected.

End of story.

Plumb, Everyone has already looked but , poking my nose in your business...boosted light a little......also about the bad wood selection, if you turn knife up a little rather than being flat does the lines they are expecting to see in Koa show up better. If so might retake photos with a little piece of something under knife to make it angle a littlle.......or not.....I humbley step away......300

The knife looks like the Shoppe was wishing and hoping somebody would accept those slabs. Naturally they'd rather sell them than throw them in the garbage (which is where they should be).

The reason I think it should go back is that if knives like that are accepted by the buyer......they'll be thinking they can palm off stuff like that on the rest of us.

I sure don't want to get sub-standard wood and have to go through the trouble of sending it back.

Standards go down as low as the customer will accept......and on this one the standards went too low.

Very good knives.
I like the wood on a handle too.
Sorry what does it mean: I sorta..... ?
