A question for Vec and others

That's kind of the idea I was going for with a short bit Trail Hawk, something with small haft and proportional head specifically for disposable throwing in a combat situation. It's just theory though, I've never thrown anything that small, let alone used it in a combat situation.

try the Rifleman's Hawk with a trimmed bear and poll on a 12 - 16" handle for that, brother - you will absolutley love it probably, as it is a great field tool in a small package, as well as a good thrower and secondary parying weapon. - if htings got sticky in a sword or long hawk fight, you could just casually toss the little Rifleman hpahazardly into the other guy's legs, and then finish him with your primary, for instance....

i just made one a while back for a B-Day gift, and i could barely let go of it - an unexpected pleasure to carry in the back of your belt.

Vec, I like the idea of a small hawk or hatchet sometimes in a certain so it does not stick out and in the right instance one good quick sot out of nowhere and the fight is over before they knew they where hurt. But there is also a place for longer handles like 30 inches give or take for more than just chopping but also hooking and closing up a situation, also parrying or countering an opponents strikes, also reach of a longer handle is like watching a boxing match with a short guy and a tall guy, a lot of the time the one with reach will scores hit(S) before the shorter one can move in. so it may come down to use what you got. Need to learn the feel of a tool even if you just whack off a few branches off a dead tree or snag and splits or sink the head of your hawk into some wood just to become more familiar with how it feels ain't trying to sexy this up cause I sure as hell don't wanna be pole axed

That's quite true but you could also do the same with a decent combat knife or dagger and it would be even easier to conceal.

One of my favorite moves I practice a lot is hooking the target with the beard of the hawk and pulling it into the knife I have in my left hand. After years of it and developing the muscle memory I've gotten to be quick at it. A good deal of what I've practiced is not using the tomahawk as a weapon much at all but rather a tool for parrying and hooking. It's similar in style to using a targe & dirk combination. IMO one of the short hafted tomahawks would be worthless for this. Longer handle = longer area to use for parrying and more reach to hook 'em and reel 'em in.

absolutley, brother - chopping is the least of what a proper hawk will do.

i like the short hawk i mentioned because it is massive. - it doesn't matter what end of it hits you - it's going to hurt, then you finish it.

- my main hawks are always long (at least until i perfect my Sectionals ), but you put an extendable lanyard on one of these short ones and they are going to make short work of the best hawker that retains his hawk in hand in a fight, when the little hawk/axe thingy is used with skill and determination in a mace or manriki mode.

we can't write off a weapon or an adversary, just because you wouldn't choose his weapons. - no fight is settled until it's over.

Reminds me of something I read about throwing knives (I don't remember who said it): that if you are going to throw a knife, throw it hard, so it hurts no matter what orientation it's in when it hits.

That short hawk lanyard idea sounds real interesting

Thanks for the input, Vec-I'm interested to hear your opinions on the newer Cold Steel hawks for this role, when they come out.

Vector could you tell us more on using lanyard ?

just about anything will do, but there are some cool simple little knots that you can do too, to make the lanyards retractable, like the one i do on my regular Mk V hawks. - but frankly, i don't know what the knots are called - kind of a prussik knot and a hangman's noose mixed together. - they seem to be pretty sturdy to me and ther is no hardware to break.

i'll try to do a quick video tutorial on my growing YouTube channel, brother (kindly see link in my new sig line) - give me a little while while i get all my new stuff up, and thanks in advance for the patience.

HTH.

just a quick thanks guys, this thread has proven to be better and more diverse in scope than I originally intended.
Keep the input coming
