Hey guys, well some of you know I just bought the buck vanguard. But as any other knife colletor, I want another. Now I've had my eye on the SOG Field pup for a while and I think I may go ahead and buy one. But What I was wondering is, I've neer had a Aus-8 blade before, and I was wondering If any knew how it compared to buck 420 HC.

thanks guys

Neither is considered "high-end" but I think if you're ok with one, you'd be ok with the other. Others will have more detailed info, I'm sure.

Oh yeah, I read a review on the ourdoors foum, or what ever it is and its supossedly wasn't that bad.

I have used "knives of Alaska's" aus8 with little to complain about. I will say that for the most part.... I prefer carbon steel for a true outdoor blade over ANY stainless steel that is. That said... it gets sharp, holds a good edge, and doesn't take the grinder to bring it back.... should be OK:thumbup: Just my $.02 of course;)

ok sounds good, I two like carbon steel for outdoor knives, But im having a hard time find a style I like for 60 dollars in canada. I've looked at many grohmann knives, but I really like the look of the field pup. I hope it'll work ok, It's mainly going to be used for cutting, and only batoning thin brachs.

I would recommend a Grohmann over SOG any day. Stainless or Carbon... IMHO you will get a better design for outdoors. Just my $.02 worth.

the seal field pup is great I use mine just for skinning deer since it is a little small for carrying. I prefer the SOG Tigershark or CS trailmaster bowie for carry.

I'll give Grohmann a second vote The flat grind makes for a much better general purpose blade, and is available in carbon by special order. The #3 in flat grind with micarta is a lot of knife at a light weight. I have models 1 through 4

well, I have to say I've had the survival model in the back of my mind for a while, and it also has the semi classic nessmuk look to it which I like. I'll read into that one a little bit more.

The Aus-8 steel has more carbon in it than the 420hc .Plus the aus -8 is better and will hold an edge longer! You can go to agrussell.com and look at their steel guide for more info.

The #4 "Survival" is a great alternative...I have that model in carbon with a flat-grind and it is "Nessmuk-esk" in design. Great skinner and battoning design. I need to get a better sheath, but it's been used on a few trips and I'm quite pleased with it. I also have the #1 and #3 in stainless steels...I haven't had any major issues, but I prefer carbon steel.

I have read only positive comments about the Field Pup and Aus 8 whilst not an "in" steel holds an edge fairly well, resists rust fairly well and is less prone to chipping than some other high end stainless steels.Aus 8 is also fairly easy to sharpen.
For a small all round knife I would say if you like it get it !!!

The Field Pup is sold by NewGraham at $37.72 !!!
It says out of stock just now but I am sure they would get you one in.I have found their service to be unbeatable !!!

well, I went ahead and ordered the russell #4, but it being christmas and every thing I doubt ill get it in the usual time frame. But when I recive it ill give you all some pictures, of course with the wetterlings, and my leatherman wave as usual. And claim again that I have finally found that right one ;)

"There can never be only one" :D Did you get the #4 with a flat-grind?

ROCK6

yes, but im just getting the normal grind. actually i dont know if its sabre or hollow ground, i think sabre.

I think you'll be very happy with your choice!
I have the #1 and #3, they're both awesome knives.

If you want to change from a leather sheath to kydex, contact Normark (On Scene Tactical) as I believe he does them for a #4.

Cheers!
