A quick knife question, Ill post in general too.

I like the look of the Grohmann knives. They have a kind of unintimidating look as far non-knife people go, won't draw a ton of unwanted attention.

I think carbon steel is the way to go. I don't know if I'm turning into a knife snob or if I really see a performance advantage but I'm getting less and less impressed with my stainless blades.

On a side note, I have found that not all 420 steels are created equal, at least not heat treated equal. Don't try to benchmark the performance of that steel by your Buck knives, there's somthing special in the sauce at Buck that makes their steel perform better than most in my experience.

Great choice, I've got the #4 in stainless flat grind. You'll probably cut through the strap on the standard sheath pretty quickly; it's easy to draw the blade against it. If you don't want to go with kydex, Grohmann has both pouch and overlap style sheaths in leather.
While we're on Grohmanns, the #2 makes a great little neck knife.

I know what you mean, when before My grande father passed on, he gave a grohmann large skinner, and the strap was almost separated.

AUS-8 is pretty good steel, not the greatest edge holder but quite fine grained as far as stainless steels go. Takes a pretty good edge (if it is done right it take a very good edge).

My very personal $0.02: Decided never to buy 420HC again. Dissappointing steel in comparison to what else is out there. If you get it custom heat treated it might actually be a decent steel, but run of the mill as it is, no thank you.

I can respect your decision, For me its good only because I put by buck through very small amounts of abuse, general cutting, But then again, ordering the grohmann is going to give me what I was looking for. But the buck makes a beautiful addition to any collection, That I know any one will agree on ;)
