I come from Sheffield, was taught how to make pocket folding knives at the age of 12 still do it as a hobby and among other things collect Sheffield folding silver fruits knives by maker pree 1900.
yesterday while wandering around an antique fair my wife grabbed my arm said “Dave you haven’t got one of these- what is it?”
well I have now and it’s a quill cutter . i don’t know much about them so any ideas?
Seriously, I cannot find anything on it at all so far.
any ideas or thoughts most welcome.

New to the site - how do I post pictures up on it? Help greatfully received.

Welcome!
Jack Black Jack Black is a good resource for Sheffield cutlery information - he may be able to help.

Here is how I post images. You do not need to be a paying member of BF or create an account with imgur for this to work:

Paste the code you just copied directly into the body of your message and it should show up.

Edit: I put all that in a collage, so it is not so much to have to scroll through in a thread…

Welcome to the forum Dave, hope you can post a pic :) I'm from Sheffield myself

When you get to step three (the first picture of the cucumbers) of J Just Tom. picture posting aid, just right click on the picture and select copy image then place your cursor where you want the picture to display and paste it in your post

That's how I got this picture in this post.

I have just got to work out how to do it. I have never seen a knife like this before, really interesting.I have already contacted Patricia Lovet who is probably one of the best calligraphers in the country as she probably knows a lot more about quill cutters than I do or she probably knows a man that does.

at the moment I am using an iPad and just don seem to be able to get pictures up.

I came from Atterclife originally and then spent my adolescence on Abbeydale Road.

The Imgur thing doesn’t work on iPads/iPhones. You need to do it from my computer. Looking forward to seeing the pictures though.

I tend to use the iPad most of the time now as I can have it and use it in my workshop garden etc. I think the last time I turned the big machine eon was several weeks ago.

if anybody wants to see pictures and gives me an email I will happily send them and then if you can just post them up.

It works from my iPad- that’s all I ever use, and where the screenshots are from.

Anyway it works for me, but the whole image-posting thing is pretty difficult on this site it seems, and I don’t doubt there is something about your operating system or location which makes it not work for you.

I put an address on your profile page. If you send me an image i will try to post it.

It sounds very interesting, I've seen quite a few quill cutters, including some with multiple blades, so interested to see it. I have a vague recollection of one being on display in one of the Sheffield museums a long time ago, and I also think I might have a book with an image of one. I'll have a look tomorrow.

Attercliffe on a Saturday morning was a sight to behold once :) I remember going for an interview at Hartley's printers as a teenager. Did you drink in the Broadfield after moving to Abbeydale Rd?

I use Imgur on my iPad, and on my Android phone. Seems to work fine. Not the only way you can post here of course 👍

No my dad did sometimes but mostly used the Robin Hood. Not really me, when not in the student bar at the poly I was usually in the black swan.

Ok, so the younger generation may mock our lack of tech-savvy, but we pulled it off - with an AOL email account, no less…

Thanks for that. I have never seen one of these before. Three blades are Brocken and there are 6 different blade profiles but if anybody has any ideas one this one please share.
no idea on the blade marks but all blades have half stops. This must have cost quite a bit in its time. When handling old knives like this you just wonder about the history don’t you.

Very interesting and bizarre piece. Seems to be Taylor's Eye witness? Scratted scales, And then coined liners and all those blades with sunk joints....possibly an exhibition or apprentice's item?

Others know more, I know I'm interested.

Thanks, Will
