A riddle of steel

Great story & Pic's! Thanks for sharing!. Glad no one had their legs taken out from under them.

Send that Deere Slayer in and I will see what we can do. That is a heck of a story for sure. Glad no one happened to be driving down the road at just the wrong time.

Garth
This is why I love Busse Combat.

Great story, with a happy ending to be sure.

I once mowed over a $500 pair of prescription eyeglasses :mad: Drinking was not involved.

Actually, where it doesn't have chips and rolls, it WILL still kill. It isn't a stabber anymore, though. Purely slash. Mostly back near the grip, though.
And like several have mentioned, I'm REALLY glad no one got hurt.

Just to be sure they have everything they need to fix your knife, dont just send the BB13 in, send the mower blade in as well and just to be double sure send the contents of the top shelf of your liquor cabinet.

Thanks Garth. I'll be in touch tomorrow. I really appreciate anything that can be done. The BB13 has already taken up a special place in my stable of blades even before this. It is a great knife that I hope can be nursed back to health.

I am very happy that there was no person in the middle of that trajectory...particularly some kid. OTOH, your knife seems to have won the war with the mower deck.
p.s. My first, and only, brand new John Deere mower burned up so many very costly belts,...without any dealer sympathy, that I sold it within about three months at a huge loss.

This particular John Deere has been an unbelievable machine. I just put the third belt on it in its 12 year life span. It has been a good mower. It's been through hell. It actually caught on fire at one point, slagged the entire front end. Got the hood, headlights, some wiring, and a tire replaced, and it runs like a champ, even though it has taken to burning a lot of oil since the fire. This incident did about as much damage to it as anything. Moreso to the mower deck than the fire did.

Great story, with a happy ending to be sure.

Honestly, I was stone cold sober when this happened. I DID get quite drunk later in the evening, in mourning. About the time I originally posted, with all the misspellings and typos.

Too bad I can't afford good stuff, and JWB.

this is the kind of thread that will make me deeply rooted into busse even more

Mow over some SR101. Mow over some other brands/steels. Post comparison results to "Proof of Busse Superiority" thread. We'll set up a GoFundMe for a new mower, I promise.

LOL.... sure....

dogboye~ What model JD mower and deck size? With that I can give specs to rpm, blade speed and some math whiz here can quantify and demonstrate overall impact force with which it is highly unlikely any other blade on the planet could survive in as good a shape as yours did. I don't think just being called a fanboy would preclude the results from this test as plausible ONLY with a Busse.

LT150, approximately 2005 model, with 38" mower deck. At full throttle at impact. :D
Of note, it appeared on the mower blades that the left-side blade did partake of the impact, but only slightly. All of the major damage to the deck and blades was primarily on the right side of the deck.
Also, the plastic guard that is spring loaded to help keep rocks from coming out from under the deck at high speed was missing. Damaged irreparably prior to this, and removed for replacement. So nothing to even slow down the Busse.

Well, This could have been much worse for several reasons. First of all, your chopper could possibly be valued higher than the LT150 and secondly, it could have tweaked the deck out of shape putting the blades on different cutting planes by blunt force Busse trauma, re-aligning the spindle pockets. I can tell you the blades on this model, governed by ANSI guidelines were traveling at a speed of 12500 FPM measured at the blade tip (feet per minute=2.37 miles in 60 seconds) so I have that at 142 miles per hour, a piece of sharpened steel impacts your Busse with extreme malice and you got a couple chips? and cracks in the handle? Who's not impressed by that? .... :) But seriously, it worked out good no one was hurt. We could have read about some tragic event on the news and all this wouldn't be something to talk about in this light.

On another subject, I can't be the only one who had a lightbulb go off with "INFI Mower Blades???" did I?

Engineers have a term for this "Events performed outside design limitations"

Maybe they"ll make a "Chopatula" out of it for you!

This is exactly what you should ask for when you send it to Garth. Then mow over it again. Then ask for it to be turned into something else. After a few goes of this you will end up with something unique in the Busse world.

Yeah, I definitely can't chop anything hard enough to hit 142 mph for the entire swing until impact. o_O If that mower couldn't break one, neither can I.  Pretty much confirms what I already suspected! ;)

But he already has that... a mown & thrown BB13! o_O You know, spelled differently that might have more flushable connotation.

That's true. Maybe he should buy three BB13s and bolt them under the John Deere in place of blades and that would solve all his problems. Would be a hellava mower.

Sorry, been out of touch on this. Just got the blade back today. Sorry Garth, I've been out of town and the blade got held in the mail.
The blade looks like it was never even subjecte to this torture. They added INFI to the edge, reground it, re-coated it the same as before, and replaced the resciprene grip. It literally looks like a brand new blade, and no smaller or narrower than it was. It's like magic.

But seriously, it appears that Busse replaced it lock, stock, and barrel, with a brand new BB13CG. Unbelievable! I just can't believe this level of customer service. I couldn't have asked for anything more than what they did. I am humbled. And embarrassed even more now for what I let happen to my treasured BB13CG.

Excellent! I bet you're glad you gave the Busse warranty a chance now! ;) I know I was when I did!

Have fun with your new one and remember that the rumors are true! If you don't give your Busses a regular beating they will run away in search of a more abusive home!!:D

We had to chain your old one up because she kept trying to get back to your place! Apparently your John Deere and her have a "thing" now!:confused::cool:

Let's Drink!

Jerry :D
