A Shot from the Snark-ebus

I'm looking at either a Mosin or a 10/22. I want a fun little plinker rifle. Something that isn't going to be terrible to shoot, or get me into trouble.

7.62x54r is a little more than .308 last I checked. I'd look for a mauser that's been converted to .308. They aren't hard to find but they are about twice as much as a Mosin. My M44 is fun to shoot. Big boom, but decently accurate. Trigger is mushy but light. If you get one with a stiff trigger they are easy to modify and lighten.

The 10/22 is pretty much the best all-around .22 rifle on the market. Accurate, reliable, durable, customize-able, and semi-automatic with 25 round mags is just plain fun.

I suppose I should get with the program. I've got two Yugo SKS's and no AK's. Just got 200 stripper clips in my last shipment o' gun stuff, but sold two packs of 20. Still, 160 stripper clips holds 1,600 rounds of ammo. That should last a while when the zombies attack. I have to confess, shooting the SKS is most fun I've had with my clothes on and not involving my wife in a very long time... A friend from work (former Army Ranger who blew out his knees on a jump..technically, it was the landing...) declared that the SKS is a "rifleman's rifle" for intermediate range.

Yeah. it's getting harder and harder to find decent "beater" guns and it doesn't help that a lot of people that don't know better think they can make them into an AK clone. End up spending more than what an AK costs to f**k up a perfectly good gun and make it a worthless hunk of crap.

AK's are a load of fun too. What I'd really like is a Mini-30 tactical.

The best of both worlds and then some but at the price of both put together.

PimpBiscuit, those sticks definitely live up to their name. But should be pretty good anyway. I've heard nothing but good things about the ugly stick. But like I've reiterated numerous times, I'm not a fisher for real. I might cast some bait, but I'm definitely not a master bait thrower or anything.
Are you implying that the Biscuit is a master baiter?
Implying? Insinuating? No, that looks like he just said it, flat out.
Your words! Not mine!!!
Nope....your words. (see the unedited text above for example)

I have that Mini 30 but in Stainless. I added a folding pistol grip buttstock also. I like it a lot.

Rigs are built. Just need to rid of this damn head cold and find some bait.

Nice set up! Fighting a big catfish is so much fun. Good luck!

A friend of mine is obsessed with cat fishing. He had a goal of catching the Colorado state record catfish. After a while of saying he was going to do it, he did it. Big catfish for Colorado. Around 39 Lbs I think it was. That was in 2010. His record stood for 4 months when it was beat by a 43 Lb cat from the same reservoir. The girl who caught it was trout fishing with worms and had previously only caught 2 fish in her life. My friend is more obsessed than ever and determined to reclaim his record.

Here is a video of my friend Daris after landing his record catfish. Its a crappy shaky video, he was alone landing and photographing it while out in his boat with a big adrenaline rush.

Thanks for the links. The beginner's luck thing totally sucks. :D

Both my AK's have good folders on them and it makes a nice compact gun. If I ever got a mini-30 I'd probably leave the factory stock on it since I already have the folders covered. Throw a 1-4x on it and do some damage.

I'd get with the guy at Cheatham Dam and scope out the big boys.

His name is probably Robert E. Lewis. :D
I need to call and see what current status is on fishing below the dams. Last year, there was a pitch battle between the Corps and TWRA on access.
Feds wanted to restrict it. TWRA said they wouldn't enforce it. I think federal legislation made it all a moot point, but I want to be sure.

my do-all mid-range rifle is a Marlin 336 in .30-30. love it.

A friend of mine bought a 336w new at walmart back when they were only $265 or so. A few years later his wife was not far from cranking out their first kid so he sold it to me for $200 after only shooting one box through it. I think I had it for a few years and only shot one or two boxes through it and decided I didn't have much use for it and sold it for $275. I really wish I hadn't done that. I'm kinda digging the 336 youth model, nice and compact. I think I'll just keep my eye out for a used .30-30 at the shops that I cruise. What self-respecting gun guy doesn't have a .30-30 lever action?

Love the 30, just wish I could find one. :( Also the problem with the cartridge is finding decent brass ammo. I know it's out there, but nowhere near as plentiful as say 5.56... and I'm not interested in putting steel cased ammo through a semi-high cost rifle.

I do have a couple 14s, though. :)

I'll have to get a couple vids up of the wife shooting it. I taught her how to shoot this passed year. She went from being afraid of guns(her reaction to her first shot fired is hilarious) to having a lot of fun. Good stuff. :)

My dad picked one of these up a little while back. The cool thing is walmart's, for whatever reason, comes with the laminated wood stock which normally is sold with the higher end models. It's a really good deal.

I thought they were fit with birch instead of walnut, and that was how they kept the cost down.
At this point I'd expect laminates to cost less than a solid block of good wood.
For quite awhile I drooled over the XLR version, but still wanted a shorter barrel - no more than .22". In the end I went used, and amazingly my rifle cravings subsided enough to be ignored for awhile.

...

I picked up a couple of Russian Mosin 91/30's and they kick like mules. Not fun at all. Oddly enough, the Chinese Type 53 (which is a clone of the M44...the Russians shipped machine tools to China rather than giving them the plans) that I got at the same time was very pleasant. My assumption is the shorter barreled carbine generates less muzzle velocity and therefore less recoil...but it's only a theory. I need to get a second one or an M44 to verify....

And there is no arguing that the 10/22 is a ton of fun. I've got one with a threaded barrel and only have about 7-8 months more to wait for my tax stamp to pick up a suppressor for it.

this was the case a while ago.

apparently they're being blown out below cost? tempting to get a couple sets. cheaper than Ethan can get/sell them :D

then again, how many of the same kitchen knives does one need?
I'm trying to decide if I need to order another set. Since my set got stolen  :grumpy::thumbdn:

The whole not really working much thing makes it hard to rationalize though as well.
Oh, and the Esee warranty does NOT cover theft. I figured as much but decided I might as well ask :D
