A Shot from the Snark-ebus

.308 is pricey to shoot as a plinker imho

an M39 Mosin is fantastic if you can get one.

or you can buy a known good barreled 91/30, or any good carbine (esp with bad wood), add the archangel stock and have a studly thing: bonuses: 10 round magazines, after-market ready bent bolts, ability the mount a "scout scope" by knocking out two pins on the original sights, and swap in - solid; AND you can then double your build costs by adding a Timney trigger group made for Mosins + get an additional safety.

trivia: Mosins have a perfectly good safety. most Mosin users have no idea how to use it. as well, there's some cool tricks to learn. good rifles. they suck to scope, but otherwise...

would love to get me a PRETTY sks, one of the clean teak ones. i'm very picky. all my Mosins are *exceptional* and in amazing condition. no bad wood there. two M39s. happy boy.

Ruger 10/22s. so many kinds. first time buyer? i'd suggest the take down model in polymer and stainless. easy peasy backpacker, very "safe" because you can break it down and more easily lock it up. stainless. no weather issues. ever. the new Ruger 25ish round magazines are quite good. scopeable. triggers can be upgraded. good kit.

for the money, pricey, but i want to own the "nordic" version of the 10/22. also known as the SR-22 ready to go. "tactical" lol... http://ruger.com/products/sr22Rifle/images/1236.jpg

or go 10/22 "ATI Destroyer Gray" :D http://ruger.com/products/1022DE/images/11113.jpg'

just stay away from hipoint :D

Got the gray ATI version of the 10/22 and like it very much. That's the one that has the threaded barrel and I'm waiting on my tax stamp for the Liberty Essence.

I did take my Chinese Type 53 and put an ATI stock on it and a pistol scope. Makes a decent, and absurdly cheap, scout rifle.

It could be a midlife crisis, but this is how I see it (mind you, this is my view yours is probably going to be different) your 40 hours job you realize you need it. It's the necessary evil so you put up with it. Your knife job while it's a lot of work it's what you love doing. It's your passion (at least how it seems). The job where you're helping your friend, you're helping your friend. You seem to be the type that will do anything you possibly can for someone. So the knife/truck shop more than make up for how frustrating your 40 hour job is.

Plus, you're friends with Murph so you're obviously a masochist.

I bolded what I think is the important part. Unless it's putting a strain on family, I'm not sure there's a problem.

Probably - that counts for a whole lot in a person's general well-being.

Work all three and save all your money until you just can't stand it anymore and/or your wife threatens to leave you for never being around... then quit the job you like least (and I bet I know which one that is). Life is way too freaking short to deal with people you despise every blankety-blankin' day.

I wish you guys knew my buddy Glen, Aside from talking to most of you fools here on BF Im fairly a reclusive person, Theres several here that know me well, Ethan, Bladite, Guyon, Moose, Silver, Psy, Cbear, yadda yadda yadda . I guess what strikes me strange, My buddy Glen, (who is trying hard to get me to work for him full time came to me today) He's like a brother to me, Ive been doing some killer work for him last couple weeks, its no big deal, its what I would expect from someone that employs me.)Anyway, I love music, and today he gives me a ipod that he took the time and uploaded some of my favorite tunes. Now keep in mind this is on top of the $20. bucks a hour he's paying me for my time. theres about 200 songs on the ipod that he paid for on top of the device let alone the time he invested in it. He nailed the music, he knows me better than I do. I guess Im just trying to figure out if Im putting to much thought in it. Glen is famous for doing good things, so am I playing to much into it? Or is he trying to butter me up. I'm ashamed that Im asking you guys, but I guess I'm just not used to somebody doing something nice for me without something in return.

you're doing fabrication work for a mere $20/hr. Sounds to me like you already did something in return. ;)
It's good to see a couple friends who can work out a deal where both are getting ahead and feel good about it on both sides.

We don't all live in high class New England. Remember this isn't really a job I wanted, just trying to help out a friend. not to bad for a part time gig!

Todd, I think hes just saying thank you, because he knows that your doing him a solid. 20 an hour is honestly probably about 1/4 of what the work your doing would cost, fair market value. I would say that he knows this, and is just trying to find a way to say thanks, that you wouldnt feel bad about accepting.

I think he's obviously attracted to you. Flowers will be next. Watch your step here big guy.

I guess what Im trying to get from you knuckleheads that your not seeing here is, I'm torn...... I think I have a opportunity to make a living doing what I know and love best. (metal working) But, who here is going to tell me Im a fool for leaving a fortune 500 company with untouchable seniority for something that's unknown and, that I will have to work my ass off for. I don't care to work hard. but its the uncertainty that scares me, Glen, however totally encourages my knife making and could possibly be a step closer to getting there full time.

Todd, your buddy obviously appreciates you helping him out. And if you are doing great work for him, of course he wants you to work for/with him on a more permanent basis. Say you did quit your day job and started on full time for your buddy, would he be able to match or supersede the benefits and pay of your current day job? Would working for him all the time ruin your friendship?

You have obviously made a mark on the knife industry, and in my estimation, you will be getting business as long as you keep making knives.

As far as I am concerned, if you and your family are happy the way things are going, go with it.

I MADE THE LIST!!!!

For real though, there is no reason to be ashamed to ask, no harm in a little camaraderie and discussion. The iPod thing, it could just be he wanted to do something nice.

Recession Indiana is VERY different than New England! The wages are not going to be similar.

Todd,

1: Would you be able to find a job easily with your work experience, history, and skill set, if you go to work for your buddy and it doesnt work out ?
2: Do you WANT to leave where you are, and go work for your friend?
3: Are you happy with things the way they are ?

Theres lots of other little questions, but those seem to be the big three for you right now. It also kinda boils down to, Is the thing thats scaring you realistic, and if it is, what is the solution to it ?

The question, for me, would be how close you are to getting some sort of vested retirement if you already have "untouchable seniority"? If you don't have to suffer much longer to lock in some retirement income for life, it would be worth staying. If you've got 10 or so years to go, then maybe not so much worth the headache.

Todd,

I don't think anybody here knows enough about your situation, finances, working conditions..etc. to give you any advice worth two dead flies. Way too personal and life changing to ask us idiots. Do the best you can to add up the positives and negatives, discuss it with your wife then flip a coin.

:D

Glen is in a real bind, thing is, Ive been in a real bind a few times in my life, and when I was, Glen always had a good paying job for me, My family has bought groceries on his bill more than a few times. I guess I just got to balls up and say F#*K it. I cant stand where I work, but I'd just hate to think that he's taking advantage of that, I honestly don't think he is. But when the well being of your whole family depends on it, Its hard to jump off the cliff.

This! The only other thing, while it isn't normally my advice knowing you I know it won't fall on deaf ears (har-har), pray about it.

he's going to show up with a couple cases of your favorite brews, and some whiskey, and you'll fire up that iPad and listen to brotherly music...

and in the morning your bumm will be sore :D

later, you'll find the iPod

even later, you'll be glad that it wasn't an iPad

One of Erik's camp chairs. Surprisingly comfy, and it takes up almost zero space once it's taken apart. Seatbelt and shoulder harness might be a good idea now that you mention it...

it also doubles as a nice cutting board :>

make a spare seat with a hole in it, for the trench crapper :>

Todd I will give you the best advice I have ever gotten for making a decision. One is heads and one is tails, once you throw that coin in the air Pick the answer that your hoping it comes up ..lol

My hog hunting buddy uses a .30-30, but I can't remember if it's a Marlin or a Browning BLR.

I've been using an AR in 300 Blackout that I built myself.

So can me and the Colonel come down and shoot some pigs? Serious question!
