A shout out to the Journeyman smiths!!!

Mace, if you want some really useful material on this topic, talk to a guy who tried real hard only to have failed. Miserably. In totally humiliating fashion. (I know a guy)

Derick,
Dont be so down on yourself! You think your the only one to not get the stamp the first time around?
It is my opinion that if you dont "pass" the JS test you have not failed. You only fail if you do not accept the guidance that is given and come back to try again. Does it suck to not make the grade and get your stamp? Hell yeah it does! I didn't get my stamp the first time I tried....made another set of knives the next year, but last minute decided not to test(on the suggestion of a few MS)....third set of knives I made it. If it was easy...everyone would have stamps. Not sure how Wheeler got his...but for the rest of us common folk...it aint easy!
Hope you try again my friend...your knives are great and I think you would make a hell of a Master some day.

Thanks all for the help! I think I have a good start for my lecture.
Hope to see you all there.
Mace

Bah, I'm just playin, Mace. Actually quite pleased with where I am with my knifemaking right now and wouldn't trade the learning experience of the JS testing process for a box full of ivory. Actually wait, on second thought...

In all seriousness, for me, it's not about the stamp, its about what I learn along the way. I know that sounds cliche but its true. What inspires and excites me about knifemaking is the constant challenge, both technical and artistic, that a maker faces with each knife. So, to those who offered advice and guidance I couldn't be more grateful. There will be many more challenges along the way and I will consider myself blessed to have such knowledgeable and talented craftsmen there to guide me as there are in the ABS. I'll most likely get the ball rolling again soon provided I can get enough time in the shop to bang out a new set of test knives, and as I do so I'm certain that I'll learn many new lessons, just as I did the first time around.

alright both of you stop getting sappy and patting each other on the butt. derek i know a guy that can get a box of ivory to trade everything you acquired to make knives. just shoot me an email ; )
