This is by far my favorite sub-forum on bladeforums.com and one of the great things about it is the sense of community and friendship engendered here.

With that in mind, a (albeit minor) pet peeve I have about many of the posts here is that folks seem reluctant to have their first name either in their bladeforums.com signature or appended to their posts here.

I'm all for anonymity generally on the web and certainly for protecting ourselves against intrusions such as spamming, phishing and the like.

That said, I don't think that anyone will put themselves or family at risk by signing their first names to their posts in an effort to foster that feeling of friendship and community.

It would be nice for us to address one another by name as opposed to just a forum "handle".

Just my opinion and in no way am I suggesting that you must do so if it makes you uncomfortable for folks to know your name.

Thanks for taking the time to give it consideration.

I for example have had folks PM me asking a question with no way of knowing a first name , and I for one, feel odd by not addressing the reply with a name! Maybe goes back to my early days, when I addressed elders as Mr. or Mrs, , uncles or aunts by Aunt (insert name) or Uncle (insert name) etc.

In a thread I am more likely to address someone using their screen name but it still feels odd to me.

Not a bad idea actually. Ever since I went from using my real name to this one, I try to put my first name at the end of the post. I can't believe I never thought to just use the signature line.

My name is Rob and I am a slipjointer.

Thank you for stepping up, brother Rob. I will say (on a personal level) that you've been missed, so I'm very glad to see you around again.

ahem... forget something? ;)

Don't take my ID name seriously. It is an enigma. :D

Gus Kalanzis (my joints are slippin', crackin' and popin' because I can not oil them like my knives.)

Crud. I sure did. I was hoping it would be in my sig line but I'm having trouble figuring it out. Until then....

I'll second that motion brother Elliott...

You know, I've never really thought about it before, but it is a good point.

I'm Corey.
I sit cross legged on the carpet and play with shiny metal objects.
Won't you be my neighbor?

I'll always answer PM, messages or e-mail with my name but haven't thought about doing it here? Ok then.

I'm Steve and I have a knife problem. Well, it's not really a problem because I can quit any time. Really, I can. Just wait until after my new knife comes in, then that's it. I'm done.

Thanks for stepping up, guys...

I think it's a lot more traditional to be able to address one another by an actual name and I believe that it nurtures respect for one another as well.

For me it provides more of a sense of the person behind the post (as opposed to an internet automaton) and in that vein I also think that it's harder to be intentionally rude to someone whose name you know.

In any case, I appreciate it.

I pretty much sign the post.It is helpful,to know the first name of the individual, rather than just his/her user name.IMO
Elliott it is really nice to see you in full swing here, you were missed.
