A thread made for ONE thing......

I'm going on about 6 days with it on my right leg. I don't even know where I ran across it. I might have to brush up on my plant ID becasue I don't ever remember anything even close to what I thought it looked like. Lanacane is helping a lot but it's right where my shoe rubs on my foot near the ankle. Sucks.

I wasn't allergic as a youngster, but somewhere along the way from then i became allergic.

I got my 1st hard hit digging a water-line ditch in Kentucky - 3 weeks of itching misery!!! It started at my ankles and worked it's way up my legs before it finally subsided at my knees. Insatiable itching and blisters - what a horrible irritant. Now, i'm careful and on the lookout anytime in the outdoors during the warmer seasons and try to wear long pants if i'm going anywhere it's a possibility.

Ever diligent!!!

Get it every year mostly when trimming the front hedge. Tried getting rid of it but comes back, I think its seeds must be in bird droppings.

Wear gloves and wash and shower thoroughly afterwards but the stuff still manages to get on my forearms and itching drives me crazy.

Have tried all the over the counter remedies but nothing works. :(

I get it Every. Single. Year. I have gotten it so bad twice that I had to call off work or school. I'm going to post 2 pictures of how bad I got it on my ankles a few years ago. Do not click if you don't want to :barf:

I get it when I am in a patch of PI but it is mild. You all who are immune to it need to remember that you are bringing it back on you when you go through it so your family and friends can get a reaction by contact with you. Little kids especially could get a bad case after welcoming you home from a weekend adventure.

I'm immune to it :)

have walked through it with shorts and shirtless, rubbed it on my skin, you name it, never got it.

Same here. I can wallow in it without so much as an itch. OP, I hope it gets better soon. Keep it out of the blood.

Great fix for anyone that gets it is to run the hottest water you can stand over the area, the heat opens the pours for faster curing and reacts with the nerve receptors in your skin...feels great and relieves it for a few hours.

I've never seen it. Poison oak on the other hand is found everywhere around here. Thankfully I had a biology teacher who taught me "Leaflets three, let it be."

We don't have poison ivy over here but that's no help to me because I am allergic to ordinary ivy! :(

I too used to get it bad. I swear I spent half my childhood with it. The most uncomfy places I had it were mouth, eyelids(even inside the eyelid once or twice), between the fingers, and genitals. My fingers would swell so much I couldn't make a fist or the skin would split. Somehow it spread to my urethra once. Nothing like itching inside your penis and not being able to pee when you have to, to put a damper on your day. I used to go to the doc to get some kind of steroid shot. They gave me pills too but the pills take 2-3days to start working and the shot starts helping the first day.

Sometime in my late teens I developed a bit of an immunity to it. I can still get it but for the first time in my life my body fights it off on its own without meds. In fact my last visit was to the doc to get a shot for poison ivy about 17yrs ago...haven't needed the doc since then. Now when I get it its usually a pretty small patch and doesn't spread unless I scratch it.

Now I found our I'm allergic to asian ant species. One bite and I itch for weeks.

Having it in your urethra would SUCK. BAD >:(

The New Zealand variety is called ongaonga. I have a picture of it online. It is nasty stuff. Personally I don't notice it at the time of touch but I become itchy and red and painful over tens of minutes and I stay itchy and painful for two or three days.

There have been recorded deaths due to it, both animals and (I think) people. In one occasion a cavalry troop pushed their horses through it and one horse died. That's pretty hardcore.

wherever poison ivy grows so does jewelweed, which cures poison ivy
i usually boil some and freeze into icecubes to keep in the freezer so i can use it when jewelweed isnt in season

I have read that the oils from PI can last on unwashed clothing items, i.e packs and shoes, for up to a year. So you could have went through the stuff last year and get it this year just by touching the oils.

I'm glad one of you guys brought up jewelweed.... I was beginning to worry about W&SS... lol.

In my town, I'm know as the "Poison Ivy Guy" because I've helped so many folks get past poison ivy fear with jewelweed. The post office has a contact sheet up to "call Rick for the cure." Jewelweed is effective because it attacks urushiol at the molecular level and doesn't rely on doping up your body's immune systems.

Poison Ivy, Oak, Sumac and stinging nettle have nothing on Jewelweed. Look in shady, wet, sometimes rocky areas.

If you have a pet that goes outdoors, you can get it from them. The oil is active for 5 years on surfaces. A family member has claimed to have had immunity to it most of his life but eventually got it bad. The Doc told him the immunity wears off with frequent exposure to it.

If I remember correctly, you crush the stems of the Jewel-weed then rub it on?

The whole plant can be used. It is most effective, crushed and rubbed directly on the affected area.(OR AS A PREVENTATIVE URISHOL BLOCKER)

You can also steep it(not boil it) for 20 minutes to make a liquid treatment. In a spray bottle, it will keep for 7-9 days in the fridge. You can also freeze it in cubes. They will keep for several months but lose a bit of potency. I suggest freezing it in icecube trays, then transfering them into a bag so they don't evaporate. Once the plant is dry, it's useless so don't bother making dehydrated tea leaves.
