Sal, Mike, et al.,
I haven't joined the AKTI because they/you don't have a specific enough agenda (as far as I know). I know that's at least partially the fault of the members/prospective members. I'm waiting for AKTI to say that they're going to do A, B, and C. If I agree with these goals, and I most likely will, I'll join. The $15 is very reasonable but, from my point of view, it's the principle of spending it and not knowing what it's going to do that I don't like. I think alot of non-members feel the same way as I do.
To give an example, a few years ago (OK more like 5 or 10 years ago) there was an organization called the National Motorists Association (formerly known as the Citizens for Rational Traffic Laws) whose main goal was to increase the 55 mph national maximum speed limit. This organization was really focused/single minded. I gave money (more than just my annual dues), called politicians, wrote letters, whatever I could reasonably do ... and their plan worked.
Getting back to the AKTI, at this point in time, I don't feel like my knives/knife freedom are threatened enough for me to join. I know many people would disagree with me but, that's how I feel.
My suggestions for possible specific goals would be:
1) Get rid of that California law that makes some people carry tiny ass knives. I don't even know exactly what the law is (I don't live anywhere near California) but, I know it's got to be stupid and I don't want it where I live. If it's a law there, it could just be a matter of time before it spreads.
2) Legalize automatics. This is something I think alot of knife people would agree with. If you told someone (a knife person) that all they need to do was to pay $15, and the AKTI would try like hell to gets automatics legalized, most (knife) people would do it.
3) Do something about the FAA regs which keep you from carrying a big knife (over 3" blade?) on a plane or even a knife that looks "menacing". As I understand it, it isn't the FAA but the specific airline or security company that works the airport that makes the knife rules but, I would think the FAA has some leverage in the rulemaking. Even if you don't do anything to strike the part of the rule about large blades, getting rid of that "menacing" part would be a big win (to me). By the way, the knife I'm talking about is a fully serrated Spyderco Delica!
