A very Important message. AKTI

AKTI will have a table at the Blade show. I have also asked the board for assistance in moderating an AKTI forum here on Bladeforums. I cannot moderate two forums alone. We're waiting on response now.

Keeping in mind that one thread is easily broken and a bunch of threads woven together is call a rope (or "line" for those that distinguish). Either is hard to break.

Sal, Mike, et al.,

I haven't joined the AKTI because they/you don't have a specific enough agenda (as far as I know). I know that's at least partially the fault of the members/prospective members. I'm waiting for AKTI to say that they're going to do A, B, and C. If I agree with these goals, and I most likely will, I'll join. The $15 is very reasonable but, from my point of view, it's the principle of spending it and not knowing what it's going to do that I don't like. I think alot of non-members feel the same way as I do.

To give an example, a few years ago (OK more like 5 or 10 years ago) there was an organization called the National Motorists Association (formerly known as the Citizens for Rational Traffic Laws) whose main goal was to increase the 55 mph national maximum speed limit. This organization was really focused/single minded. I gave money (more than just my annual dues), called politicians, wrote letters, whatever I could reasonably do ... and their plan worked.

Getting back to the AKTI, at this point in time, I don't feel like my knives/knife freedom are threatened enough for me to join. I know many people would disagree with me but, that's how I feel.

My suggestions for possible specific goals would be:

1) Get rid of that California law that makes some people carry tiny ass knives. I don't even know exactly what the law is (I don't live anywhere near California) but, I know it's got to be stupid and I don't want it where I live. If it's a law there, it could just be a matter of time before it spreads.

2) Legalize automatics. This is something I think alot of knife people would agree with. If you told someone (a knife person) that all they need to do was to pay $15, and the AKTI would try like hell to gets automatics legalized, most (knife) people would do it.

3) Do something about the FAA regs which keep you from carrying a big knife (over 3" blade?) on a plane or even a knife that looks "menacing". As I understand it, it isn't the FAA but the specific airline or security company that works the airport that makes the knife rules but, I would think the FAA has some leverage in the rulemaking. Even if you don't do anything to strike the part of the rule about large blades, getting rid of that "menacing" part would be a big win (to me). By the way, the knife I'm talking about is a fully serrated Spyderco Delica!

Mike,
Thanks for your great support of AKTI, encouraging everyone to join and to use the banner! Membership from the web site has really increased in the last week.

This is my first experience with a forum. Sal encouraged me to check it out and I'm quite impressed! Your suggestion of using the forum by AKTI as a storage for questions and archive of information would really save time and resources.

The decals will be available the end of next week and I plan to get them mailed a/o.

Jan - Welcome aboard. Let's get one or two more and we can moderate an AKTI site.

Sounds like a plan.

What ever we can do to help just let us know.

Also I own the server we are on and to help AKTI even further you can move your site to my server and there will be no hosting fees or costs. Hopefully this can save AKTI a few dollars and ever dollar counts. Let me know and we can move the site within a few minutes.

Mike,

Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention. This is indeed an important topic that we should all be aware of. You need only look at the threads on what kind of knives you can take to England to see one of the reasons.

While I think a forum for this topic won't get the traffic of something like Spyderco (for good reason

) it will definitely benefit from having it's own place seperate from the main forum.

Hopefully, AKTI will benefit from the added membership that this attention will bring.

Hoe would all you AKTI members like to have an AKTI icon and member # next to your forum name? I think this would encourage more to join. What so you all think??? -AR

Just a quick note to let everyone know that there was a printer goof with the AKTI decals. They will be mailed to current members shortly after the Blade show. There will be some available at Blade. Hope to meet some of you there!

And from the other side of the ocean...

Does AKTI also do it's missionary work in other countries. Since Europe has a far smaller base of knife-making companies, they seem to be far less effective in preventing "sheeple" laws.
The Netherlands for example have knife rules I can live with, but UK is allready so far over the top that I don't even dare to carry a multitool (with a locking blade) in public.

Greetings, Eelco

Eelco - We've had a number of requests from foreign countries to assist. At this time, we're still pulling together the USA "club". I imagine, once we know more about what were are doing, we'll be able to assist others.

First we have to adjust some thinking. Many question AKTI in the "what am I getting for my money", more like you would expect of a subscription to a magazine or similar.

Thinking here must be more like "this is a "club" that I get to join, be part of and help make a difference, like the Red Cross or United Way". It is not we join AKTI, it is us, you 'n me 'n those that for whatever reason enjoy knives. We are AKTI!
