The orange Farmer did yeoman's work this morning in repairing a 1" PVC pipe that had broken in my water system during the last freeze... It's saw cut the PVC pipe with ease to splice in new pipe...

I was skeptical of all of the " Farmer is the best " talk here on the forum , but a while ago I finally ordered one and I'm pleased I did .
I now own two :)
Over Christmas I went away on vacation and only took two knives , I went to a reasonably remote place where we stayed in basic , but comfortable surroundings . My knives were used constantly during this time for a wide variety of everyday camping tasks .
I was very happy with the way my selection handled everything they were presented with .
I found that the Farmer coupled with a large locking folder was a great combo .

Great report from the field Ken, sounds like a fun trip. What sort of tasks, anything challenging or unusal?

Great selection for such a trip.

It was great holiday that was over to soon , work this week is a struggle :)
There wasn't any out of the ordinary knife tasks , just the general everyday things that camping and outside activities put in front of you .
I found that the Farmer was used 99% for its tools .
The bottle opener ( it was Christmas remember :) ) was the most used .
The fine tip/screw driver on the can opener was handy to open up some small Phillips head screws on a number of occasions .
The Saw got its moment of glory cutting the top off a big thick plastic drum that we needed to convert into an open topped bucket .
The Blade really only got used maybe a couple of times on Christmas morning to open some presents .
The Big Spyderco Resilience really impressed me . I bought it second hand before leaving for the trip and didn't know what to expect knowing that it is from their cheap Chinese made line of knives .
I took it with me thinking that if it got lost , damaged or confiscated going through Customs at the airport then it would be no great lose .
I really like it and because it was always in my waistband and the ease and speed of the one handed opening meant that just about all the cutting tasks were done with it .
It seemed to keep an edge fairly well and wasn't babied in any way .
I did touch up the edge once but for the amount of work it got I don't think that's to bad and it only took a minute to get it shaving hair off my arm again .

I can't think of any other small tool that packs as much usefulness into 3 1/2 inches and 4 ounces of weight. A Vic farmer can open a UPS box, cut up makins' for a sandwich, then make a survival shelter in the woods or be useful on a construction site. The saw is a marvel of ounce for ounce versatility.

^^^^ Great review Ken. You were well prepared! The tools on my SAK's get more use than the blade also. Usually my other knife (ie; Stockman or Barlow, etc) is the "knife" and the SAK is a tool.

Yep, the Farmer is pretty hard to beat

Yep, the Farmer is the complete package; and to think some would have you believe a Opinel is better alternative...some people.

The Farmer is indeed an awesome SAK.

I personally don't find too much use for the saw so the thinner Pioneer is my one and only right now!

I'm just the opposite. The pioneer has been sitting in my nightstand basket for a couple of weeks while the Farmer is now seeing EDC.

My favourite SAK is the camper for the saw. Sadly I do not own any alox as my knife budget has been reduced to 0 till at least December of this year. :(

I use my Farmer all the time at work. A few weeks ago I used it to cut a 3" PVC vent to remove a blockage and some 2x4's for nailers. I was too lazy to run down and back up 4 floors to get my reciprocating saw. :D

It's all about the saw....

I wish that the Harvester came with a split key ring .
I would happily substitute the can opener for the pruner blade , but the split ring is an essential for me .
