Photos A Walk in Nature

This thread has taken an interesting turn. I know that most of us head out to nature to find some peace and tranquility. From the stories shared it seems like we should at least be open to the possibility of occasionally finding a bit of excitement.

It would be peaceful if it weren't for all those ANIMALS!🤣

I was on a double-decker bus, heading to a lovely West Yorkshire market village, a dozen years ago, and an old lady said to her friend, "It'd be a lovely view if they'd only cut those trees down!" :D

More than thirty years ago, I was once forced to walk a very long way between the French towns of Calais and Boulogne, through the night, in the rain :( As I turned off the autoroute, at a place called Wimereux, on the outskirts of Boulogne, I passed a scrap-yard, and heard the sound of several snarling mutts heading in my direction  I pulled out my Mauser Officers Knife, and prepared to defend myself as best I could, and then heard the sound of the dogs reaching the end of their chains -ching! - I was considerably relieved!😧:D:thumbsup:
OK, since YOU started it… one more vicious animal story and then I promise I will shut up…

I was on the Outer Banks of North Carolina off season one year in my late teens (mid 1980s), and spent one night in a mostly deserted drive-in campground. A wind storm came up and blew my tent over in the middle of the night, so I decided to go for a walk, and wound up getting chased by a pack of local dogs. They didn’t pursue me past what I assume were the limits of their owner’s property, but my way back was cut off. I walked several miles to the Hatteras lighthouse to watch the sun rise, hoping they would be gone in the morning. No luck! I wound up leaving the road, going over a fence and through a completely overgrown cemetery, and eventually got back to the campground just fine.

To bring all this back to knives, I fairly sure I was carrying a knife just like this one at the time:

UocjmSB.jpg

It was one of just a few knives I owned at the time, and the original was with me until about ten years ago or so.

I was driving a 1967 Plymouth Valiant with the 170 cubic inch version of the slant six in it, for fans of that type of thing - clearly my tacky tastes extend to cars as well as knives…

About a month and a half ago I moved to the rain forest, and this thread is making me want to start lugging around my GEC Texas Camp Knife when I go for walks..
That's so cool   , share some pics when you get a chance and keep that GEC oiled :)
We are dreaming of one day going to Costa Rica to visit family ( brother in law ) there and going for walks in rainforest trails.
He is visiting us this summer with his family so we got to do likewise and go see them, perhaps next winter.

Occasional lurker, first-time poster here. I've been day-hiking some short sections of the Appalachian Trail this winter. Here are some highlights from the southern terminus to about 30 miles up the trail.
Beautiful pics my friend :)
We lived in Chattanooga for 2 years and I totally fell in love with the area. That was a long time ago. I would love a chance to walk those southern trails again.

You've convinced me. I think it's past time I placed an order for a fokos.

After a bit of a stressful day I enjoyed catching up with with the thread and the cool anecdotes and stories shared :)

I did a little google search and reading on the fokos or shepherd's axe as I did no know what it was.:cool:

My story
I got kicked in the stomach by a horse when I was about 10 years old while trying to cross a small fenced field ... and thinking it was safer to sneak behind it
It send me flying. When I got up and made it to safety I looked back to see my friends rolling with laughter :D

Thanks, Dan! Yes, I'm absolutely loving the trails through the foothills here. Your pics of Canada have convinced me I've got to visit at some point. 👍👍👍

Your camping trip doesn't sound like a lot of fun Tom! I think I've had it easy, I've never been anywhere the wildlife have regarded me as food! 😧 🤣

For the past several months my free time on weekends has been broken up by 2 trips to my elderly parents house each day, to feed them and clean up a little. I still have a window of about 5 hours to take care of my own errands, and hopefully get outdoors a little. Yesterday it rained, but today I got a couple of hours to go for a much-needed walk in the park near my house:

Brought this, hoping recent heavy rains and high winds might have brought down something interesting to cut and take home:

There is some old legends...probably Celtic in origin that claims the king of the forest is an old, large stag (whether we interpret stag to be a deer or an elk I am certainly not qualified to say)

Great pics Tom, I hope things get easier for you and your folks, and that you can get out for a hike more often

Awesome. This time of the year, you are fortunate to have seen him with the rack attached.

If I recall correctly, there was some sort of public right of way on footpaths which crossed though privately-owned fields all around my grandmother’s village in Hampshire, and there was a sort of step-over arrangement at all the fences. I visited there 2 or 3 times as a young man and walked for miles and miles - thankfully without encountering any enraged livestock 🤣.
Thats a Stile fence Tom something like these

many variations.

Just a little walk along the river again.its easy and I can get a coffee at the end from a choice of cafes.

I was standing on the bank watching a fisherman when, wham 2 beautiful glints of bluey silver flashed out from the bank under me to the other side of the river.

An absolute joy to see a pair of Kingfishers must be a nest nearby,it made my day, week year so far. 😍

No picture to fast, you will have to squint and imagine them...🤭

I have been going smaller and smaller with the outdoor carrys today I turned that around and took my Vic Farmer X which is the biggest Alox there is.

Its a pioneer with scissors and saw or a you could say a farmer with scissors ✂ 🤣

Great pics. Seeing the river & canal boats was a treat!
I‘m very interested in boats (aka boat head syndrome) and have been studying canal boats & lifestyle lately.
Good stuff. Thank you.
