Photos A Walk in Nature

I’m headed out for a much-needed vacation this morning. My itinerary is not fixed in stone due to an iffy weather report, but I hope to ride my bike from Brunswick to Fort Frederick and back, over the course of 4 days.

There are plenty of places to camp and fish along the way, and I plan to ride into Shepherdstown at some point. I want to give myself time to explore and goof off, and if I don’t make it as far as Fort Frederick I won’t be disappointed.

These are my knife choices for the trip:

The Mikov is to give away, in case I encounter some poor soul in need of a can opener, as happened last time.

I also have this in my bag:

I hope to find occasion to use it, but if not, it’s no big deal either.
Beautiful Country in that area!

Absolutely SPECTACULAR flowered landscape. Nothing like that around here - the abundance of trillium or the open decidous woods.
Heavenly!

Maybe some quiet day out there, lounging on my new bench, I can get some deer walking through photos. More as it/if it happens. Future postings will be called A SIT IN NATURE
Just don’t speak to any mysterious Dutchmen before napping on that bench. I don’t want to wait 20 years for Ray Van Winkle to wake up and give us un update on how it‘s holding up…

I did here some rumbling while I was out there - much like bowling pins being knocked over 🤔
Appreciate your concern Tom. 👍Though if you just wait 20 years naturally I might not have much to say anyway.

Gracias amigo.
We almost missed it this year as they don’t last too long once the canopy grows and the sun no longer shines on the forest floor.

My walk in nature these past few days has been purposeful - that is to say I was on a mission.
WOW 🤩 Ray !
Just great all around !
I enjoyed your endeavours out in nature my friend 👍
Keep us posted on any further projects 😎

I can see how a Puukko is the PERFECT knife to bring along for this project.

Another pic of the Trilliums with my “ out of focus” beloved Verijero 😊

Dan.

Have a great trip, Jack!! Read your posts in the Guardian thread about a lot being closed.:(
Thanks a lot guys, I'm very sorry for the slow reply :) I posted pics in the Guardians thread, but there's not too much nature I'm afraid

My wife being an archaeologist, we have been visiting as many old sites as possible. Near Holyhead we visited the remains of an Iron Age village. Very interesting.View attachment 2176969there were about a dozen of these but remains that I could find. We also visited the remains of a Neolithic burial chamber near Holyhead.

The previous post did not involve a lot of walking. We did get a couple of miles in along the coast to a reconstructed burial chamber.

My cell phone camera really doesn’t do justice to the scenery of the Welsh coastline.
It looks like you really made the most of your visit Dan
OK HERE GOES - LOTS OF PHOTOS 🤪 My walk in nature these past few days has been purposeful - that is to say I was on a mission. I had built a new trail in the neighboring Land Trust property that I have been using as a private trail going on my 3rd summer now. Change of management and new trail maps just coming out meant they weren't ready to change the status quo even as I had been given permission to cut in this trail. My wife and I are loving having our little private preserve in the midst of this 130+ acre preserved land trail system. We might open it to the public this fall.

THE BRIDGE I built several springs ago. Just Elaine and I and the deer and raccoons are using it - so far.

THIS WEEK -

I have wanted to build a sitting area on a knoll that has nice long views into the woods and swamp area pretty much in a 220° arc. In the winter the I have found deer beds on that knoll, and there are deer trails along either side of it the entire length of my own trail. Yesterday as I was working - with my back to them - I heard some stomping and deer grunts. Gone before I could turn to see. :(

Anyway, here is the project, with of course, some knives ever present. :)

DAY 1 - Was spent clearing the knoll of debris - lots of downed trees. Included taking down one widow maker that had hung up in the
red oak that ended up providing all the parts for the seat.

PRIMARY BENCH SUPPORT IN PLACE - with the tools of the trade ~

This support beam was from a dead on the stump dried spruce that still had plenty of structural integrity. Cut and solidly wedged
between the 2 standing trees.

TOOL DETAILS ~ Leather wrapped HELLE blade, Silky saw, folding handle draw knife and carving hatchet.

2nd Day - 12" Little logs on the big log makes for comfortable sitting. You can straddle, sit facing either direction, or even lounge with your back against one of the trees and your legs fully supported by the seat.

I started out with the idea of pinning the cross logs with wooden trunnels but after I pinned the first one, as all the wood was green, I woke up to realize that if I continued, these pieces would all be loose and wobbly by fall. Decided after all on double 5" long timber lock screws per log. I can then tighten as needed until everything settles down. That meant I had to swap out tools and carry in my battery powered drill and driver but in the long run a much more secure build and wayyyyyy faster too.

The spring cut red oak seat piece peeled nearly effortlessly. Was an easy part of the project.

An observant reader will see that I had changed out puukkos from one day to the next.
BOTH performed really well.

Finally the bench complete - for now. Will return in the fall after some drying and coat all with pine tar. Will blend into
the scene better and last much longer.

Taking photos of the views from the bench don't do justice. Looks like woods. ;)

This scene will give you a bit of the idea. Maybe some quiet day out there, lounging on my new bench, I can get some deer walking through photos. More as it/if it happens. Future postings will be called A SIT IN NATURE. :D

Well done! :)

Happy you and Diana are back on the Canal, Dan. Easy for me to imagine - my memories are amazingly vivid. I can warn you /remind you too that swimming at your supper landing could lead to you being supper for the fish. Didn't know about snakes too. Hope you find some sun.

Welcome back Jack

Power walking the trail this evening and I almost had a collision ~

We both stopped short and took a step back.

It was a cordial meeting and we were not unhappy for the few moments of company. :)

Look at the "hair" on this little guy. I'm sooooo jealous. Hey wait - no I'm not - my back looks a lot like that.
