Photos A Walk in Nature

Some day maybe I’ll get around to finishing these…

Have a grand day everyone. Keep your eyes open, your knife sharp, your stick sturdy, and your feet well planted.
Thank you Frank, we had a good day overall around here, just trying to adjust to the time change and the sun setting way too early.
Great advise too

For my sticks I fitted a piece of pipe on theirs ends and capped them with a rubber leg tip for chairs . In theory it would make it grippier however I have not used them that much in order to draw a valid conclusion.
One of the reason I made the sticks was that at the park where we used to take our little puppy for walks some big dogs were getting out of hand playing too rough so I needed a way to keep them at bay if need came.
On the handle part I put a piece of double sided carpet installation tape and covered with leather and stitched it up.

Keep us posted on how the shoe goo works.

Great patina on your BF knife Tim .

We went to a new spot - for us
Thanks for sharing about your new favorite place brother !
Great that you got to walk those trails again that hold a lot of meaning and good memories !
Keep up posted on the "chaga saga" :)

The first one on the left looks great Tom. It has that nice curve at the top and looks sturdy.
You can do this bro

CelloDan CelloDan - my goodness, is this normal..!?
How I wish it was normal everywhere !!! :)
It is "normal" only in a lake situated on a nature park in Quebec. Visitors can purchase food and feed the trout. They have grown to gigantic sizes !
I had visions and dreams of catching a few and cooking up a meal like no other by the shore lol :D

There's snow on the mountains here in Alberta. It was a windy day, on calm days you can see the mountains reflecting off the water. Also went fishing but didn't get any bites.
Wow Jeff, your are blessed to live close to such a breathtaking place ! So beautiful !
I have the same medium Case stockman with the square ends and pen blade instead of the spey. I really like it

I was originally planning on leaving today and camping 2 nights, but predicted high winds caused me to change my plans. Just a single night trip, then, but it’s better than nothing. I plan to visit Fort Frederick along the way, which dates originally from the French and Indian war, so I’m thinking a period-appropriate carry will be the way to go:

Glad you went to Fort Fredrick. Been there a couple times. Sure is a cool place.

That's some kinda handiwork on those sticks Dan. I don't have the patience to work up handles like those, but I really like what you did. Nice tips too.

My indoor nature project of late...

Putting the Redbone Cadet to work.

Walking in nature is good for one's health and sanity.

A new shipment of 4x6" to 5x7" Black mats (with backing boards and protective sleeves) arrived today. They really look more like a deep, dark, chocolate brown than black, but I like it much better anyway, so that's okay.

Once these are all matted, I'll decide which to frame and display in my Subterranean Grunge Gallery (aka the painted concrete basement wall with gallery lighting). Note the Redbone Case stock knife. That once rode regularly in my jeans pocket - maybe it's time once again??

72° F and overcast skies beckoned my attendance on the nature trail in late afternoon today.
Same trail as before, but a different stick and tree. Oh, and a different Buck knife too. 1995 Custom Elk Antler scaled 112 Ranger.
A friend carved the stick out of cedar and gifted it to me. Liberty is my regular trail partner most of the time.

.........it reminded me of how Koi Carp can behave, but have never seen that behaviour in the wild. The trout I go after here in UK always look the other way, reminds me of my teens 'chasing young women' - it didn't matter how you walked, stalked or tried - they never came to you.!

Lovely photos, really enjoy your posts, thank you

If that is an oak leaf I see on the deck it would mean that there is an oak tree nearby :)
I read that oak makes for good sticks although it may be a bit hard to work with.

Thank you Paul ! .... and thanks for the chuckle mi amigo :)

Wow, thanks for the glimpses into your man cave Frank and sharing some of your projects !
Love the pics of the eagles

I had to check the reference to Proverbs 3:23 inscribed in your walking stick:
"Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble"
Beautiful gift from your friend

A few more pics from our visit to Omega Park. I still have a few more for tomorrow, bear 🐻 with me :D

Lunch time

The park is huge. Visitors are required to stay inside their vehicle in areas where the bigger animals roam.
The park sells carrots to feed the animals along the 12 km car route.

An Arctic wolf had escaped their enclosure. A park employee was nearby in their vehicle monitoring the situation.

No big adventures today, just a couple hours walking through local parkland, and through a former municipal golf course they left go to seed:

I used the Fieldmaster to saw off another piece of that fallen beech I found a couple of weeks ago, long enough to make a walking stick out of this time. I already have 2 suitable sticks though, and I don’t even use a walking stick/hiking pole or whatever. I guess the little boy in me just can’t get enough cool sticks to play with…

Great stuff. Frankly, I'd like to see all golf courses re-wilded :D couldn't care less if I 'offend' golfers it's a pathetic game. As George Orwell said, it takes up huge tracts of beautiful countryside turning it into some suburban, manicured tundra using thousands of gallons of water, destroying wildlife just so the middle-aged/elderly and largely overweight can chase some little ball around a lawn:poop:o_O🤣

But it's a beautiful game, Will!
What do you think of curling?

Good eye . There is indeed a large White Oak across the back fence, in my neighbor’s yard. The branches are all crooked and gnarly, and it has yet to shed anything long enough to make a walking stick out of into my yard.

There was a bumper crop of acorns this year, for some reason.

I have never really shared the walkin sticks that I've made so I took some pics today.
Here's a few of they latest walkin sticks that I have worked on.
IMG_3265.JPG

I got interested in diamond willow several years ago and harvested sticks from all over Montana. Just like all willows they thrive near water. What I really liked is the natural beauty that I could never achieve by my poor carvings. So I just skin the bark and clean up the diamonds and smooth them out before sealing.
A few years ago I took a few Diamond Willows with me to the Oregon knife Show to surprise My Friend waynorth waynorth . At the time his SFO had a Diamond shield and I figured what better than a diamond willow? I hope Charlie comes along and shows us his collection of walking sticks! He has used the Diamond shield on a few of his SFO's!

The 3rd one from the left, with the antler cap, I got several years ago I didn't build that one but it reminded me of how they did them when I was a kid. There's a bunch of work in that stick! Even inlaid a Montana Agate in the top of the shed.

IMG_3272.JPG

The one with the dog whistle I put in is my regular dog walkin stick! I also put a rubber cane tip for better gription.

Most excellent work on yours CelloDan CelloDan !

But it's a beautiful game, Will!
What do you think of curling?
I don't want to contradict a man with taste- who knows a Dry Martini and a fine Bourbon- and who has fine taste in knives and who I respect, but we all have interesting flaws ;):D I think football (what you in US insist on calling 'soccer' for some odd reason...) is according to the Brazilians, The Beautiful Game, but Golf...er...💀

Curling?? What's that? Something to do with hairdressing??? 🤣 At least it's indoors...

OK now we get back on track, the real track of nature & knives
