Photos A Walk in Nature

I have never really shared the walkin sticks that I've made so I took some pics today.
Here's a few of they latest walkin sticks that I have worked on.

I got interested in diamond willow several years ago and harvested sticks from all over Montana. Just like all willows they thrive near water. What I really liked is the natural beauty that I could never achieve by my poor carvings. So I just skin the bark and clean up the diamonds and smooth them out before sealing.
A few years ago I took a few Diamond Willows with me to the Oregon knife Show to surprise My Friend @waynorth . At the time his SFO had a Diamond shield and I figured what better than a diamond willow? I hope Charlie comes along and shows us his collection of walking sticks! He has used the Diamond shield on a few of his SFO's!

The 3rd one from the left, with the antler cap, I got several years ago I didn't build that one but it reminded me of how they did them when I was a kid. There's a bunch of work in that stick! Even inlaid a Montana Agate in the top of the shed.

The one with the dog whistle I put in is my regular dog walkin stick! I also put a rubber cane tip for better gription.

Most excellent work on yours CelloDan CelloDan !

Those are all some great looking walking sticks Dave . That Diamond Willow is something that I would like to get hold of to do a few Sticks with . And the one with the Antler Top is just amazing . Use them in good health my friend .

Wow Dave, they are exquisite !
Thanks for sharing them !
I had no idea that sticks with those diamond shapes came from the diamond willow tree.

I am watching a couple of very interesting videos on youtube about how to harvest and make sticks with diamond willow

I hope Charlie comes along and shows us his collection of walking sticks!
Yes,me too

Curling?? What's that? Something to do with hairdressing??? 🤣 At least it's indoors...
Hey, we 🇨🇦 won the the gold 😁

CelloDan CelloDan not only fine pix but some great looking future knife handles on the heads of those noble beasts- deer and goat, maybe boar tusk too!

Thanks Will, a few more noble beasts today to wrap up our visit to the park :)
We had a wonderful time with the whole family.

I don't want to contradict a man with taste- who knows a Dry Martini and a fine Bourbon- and who has fine taste in knives and who I respect, but we all have interesting flaws ;):D I think football (what you in US insist on calling 'soccer' for some odd reason...) is according to the Brazilians, The Beautiful Game, but Golf...er...💀

Curling?? What's that? Something to do with hairdressing??? 🤣 At least it's indoors...

OK now we get back on track, the real track of nature & knives

That's the kind of jigging I dig! Beautiful knife, Will.

By the way, I love golf, though I can't play well. And futbol is beautiful, I agree. Probably the sport with the most fit players. I appreciate hockey (with fights!), American football, rugby, and baseball too. Now curling....not so much!

Wow! Those are some kinda handsome sticks. Diamond Willow??? I wonder if we have any of those around here.

It's as if I fell asleep these past few days. This thread is passing me by. Sticks for golf, sticks for curling, sticks for walking and maybe even a few sticks in the wrong place about the merit of different sports. 🤔 Dan teasing big and burly animals??? You guys are on a roll. Carry on - I'll catch up...

Here is an old Spanish friend amidst the Autumn leaves a few years ago ~

SNOWING TODAY :(
Such a beautiful knife, Ray. Do you know if José retired? Hope he is well.

Hi Vince - Last I heard from over there was from his son. José never replied personally after that to any of my emails. I can no longer find a web site and as far as I can tell what google comes up with are all from 2018/19.

I believe that his days of standing at the bench ended along with our relationship here on Bade Forums. :(

I had some good converstions with him, and will cherish the knife he made me.

A follow up here on some earlier posts and a tag to those of you who have been showing your walking sticks ~

My versions of WALKING STICK and CHAGA CHOPPA. I've been working on my walking stick for months and the Chaga Choppa this past week in response to my recent finds of some out of reach Chaga stashes. Not the 20+ feet high one but some more in the 8' to 10' zone that need a simple clunk or 2 to knock off.

Walking-Sticks.jpg

The one on the right is a true WALKING STICK - Gnarly red oak, dried for a year and epoxied as needed then sanded smooth and coated with pine tar finish.

The head has a multiple had position with a piece of deer antler as a hand rest/grip. That was an inspiration that has proven very comfortable and useful.

Walking-Stick-detail.jpg

The foot is a two toed affair.

Walking-stick-heads.jpg

THE CHAGA CHOPPA utilizes a Canadian made snow shovel handle with a SAMUEL STONER tomahawk head attached. The hawk head is intended to slip up from the bottom of the handle and lock in at the broader top of the handle but in this case the head needed to slide in over the top and be locked in by the thickness below. I'm working on a leather hood for it today.

Chaga-choppa-head-detail.jpg

The through bolt with the bottom edge of the washers on either side flattened to rest solidly on the hawk head is my way of securing it for action but also being able to easily remove the head to use as a conventional tomahawk.

The TURK's head knot makes for a comfortable hand stop as I carry the pole as a walking stick from chaga tree to chaga tree. :)

This will extend my reach and provide a very solid and sharp chaga retriever. Haven't tried it yes but very soon. Will provide photos then on those walk about.

Finishing touches ~

My Hawk now has a HOOD ~ Don't want people too aware that I am out on the trail searching for something to chop. ;)

Chaga-Choppa-hood.jpg

Already had a mask but the hood serves as camo and more protection. Slips off without the need to unlace completely.

Mask-&-hood-Chaga-Choppa.jpg

Here is a detail of the flat edge washer in place securing the head down. There is one on each end of the hex head bolt.
There are actually 2 washers per side - double stacked so as to bear more on the top face of the hawk and not eventually slip
into the margins between the head and the handle after some use.

Took a little stroll along the canal this morning, 9 miles or so in beautiful cool weather. Leaves are a little past peak color maybe, but still a treat for the eyes.

Yes Tom, a time out is good for one's soul. But I hate it when I'm out walking in nature, just trying to take a picture of my knife, and get stonewalled at every turn. Your images make me wish to be out. Maybe tomorrow.

Beautiful walk Tom.
The most Diana and I have walked in recent years is 7.5 miles ( 12 km ).
We plan to get back at it more regularly now.
Is that a knife I see on that wall ? ☺️

Don't that make you want to go ahead and get the Stag too Dan ?????
Yes Harvey, for sure.

I'll have to find me wall now to keep up with our new theme :)

That Chickadee will need a little suitcase to pack home all those toys ;)
I did not have any little suitcases however a couple of canoes will do just fine I figured .
They'll have even more room to carry away all the stuff 😁
