Photos A Walk in Nature

First snow of the season walk today. Not much of a snow fall but still pretty in it's restraint. ;)

I call this the backyard reptile root. Nice view up to the ledges. I've had many tree clearing burn sessions up here.

VIEW from one of the bridges I built on the abutting land trust trails ~

I wasn't the only one walking in the snow. Here with my BogdanS BogdanS FIREBUG PUUKKO ~

AND part of my mission today was to harvest a bit more chaga that I've been keeping an eye on. I came home with a few pounds. Later as I continued on home, I found this new little stash. Will be a good get in the spring. Must have walked past this tree 800 times and never noticed. The light just right today or was I in the zone? 🤔

Happy Trails folks....

Just about 11 miles along the canal today, carrying my usual Okapi in my pocket, and the Fieldmaster in a sheath on my belt. I ventured inside the beltway this time, where politicians and other such riffraff can be found, but turned around about 2 miles before actually entering the District.

I actually found a nice sycamore stick, in an area where it looked like the park service had been clearing out some dead trees. Here it is back at home:

I also saw a Belted Kingfisher, but couldn’t get a decent picture.

That's a beauty of a stick you rescued Tom. I recently began working up my Sycamore stick. I call it Patch, for obvious reasons, and it is some kinda hard wood - whew! Yours looks to be right about the same length as mine.

Gotten a lot colder and snowier here in Alberta. Still warmer than I'd expect for December, but it was a windy day. The knife fell into a snow bank a second after I took that picture, really got buried in the snow. Took me a few minutes to find it 🤣
Such beautiful scenery. And fishing an open-bladed knife out of a snowbank has to be interesting, to say the least.

That's why I like living on the Texas coast.
Love it Vince !!!

Great company Ray, that Puukko looks amazing.

Awesome Ray  ! Another nice find
Whenever you find chaga you probably feel how I do when I catch a nice fish LOL :)

Hey Tom, why did they mark the trail with stones like that ?

I actually found a nice sycamore stick
I wondered if it's a similar species of tree as the one in the bible that Zacchaeus climbed

Awesome vistas mi amigo !

Today was too nice a day to waste anywhere but up in the mountains.
More beautiful vistas !!!
How fortunate to live so close to the mountains in such beautiful settings.

Hey fellow nature walkers. some of you have referred to yours truly as "Dr Dolittle" in the past.

The thing is, I am afraid, I came to believe for real that I had some sort of special abilities to communicate with animals.

I now believe that I was likely hallucinating and delusional as the messages I am getting lately just don't make sense at all, it’s all garbled 😱

Just today I politely asked this chickadee to please pose for a picture with my Case Trapper.

What he replied back did not make any sense at all ... something along the lines of kissing his donkey 🫏 ? 🤔

Ok, sorry about that folks 🫢
I sometimes forget I am not 13 anymore 😊

On a more serious note here are the rest of the pics from this outing 👍😎

The trail is actually what once served as the towpath for the C&O canal. I assume they were useful reference markers for folks who worked and transported goods along it. Most of the old ones are gone, but there are newer concrete ones every mile still, and they make great reference points for recreational use:

I wondered the same thing when I scored my first Sycamore stick Dan. Nope. That was a Ficus sycomorus, as opposed to the Platanus, that is known as a Sycamore in North America, according to the New World Encyclopedia on line.

It's what I call "Urban Hiking". Those times I feel like getting out of the neighborhood afoot, yet I don't really feel like driving to a destination; when I go searching for nature in the city. I'm between Dragonfly/Damselfly/Butterfly season and Bald Eagles-gathering-at-the-dam season, so it's a good time just to saunter along and see what comes to mind.

On this day, I ended up wandering the fenceline behind the soccer fields and baseball diamond; one of my favorite Butterfly haunts. It seems the park district felt that the treeline needed some sanitizing. Wow! Is this a stick collector's dreamworld, or what? There goes the Butterfly hangout - so sad.

I knew that inside vest pocket would come in handy for something. Concealed carry permit not required. But Fisk can now travel with me through the residential areas, without drawing attention, only to emerge at the right time for harvest.

I scored some nice straight sticks this day. Note! No live trees were cut by me on this outing.
20231209_145044-DDS.jpg

No time remained to seal the ends properly by the time I returned home, so packing tape had to suffice. The stick on the far right is in straightening mode at present. I really don't know what I'm doing, so this is strictly experimental. The others in the photo range from rough-cut to finished.

"Morning Has Broken", and it's time to do it right. I'm not sure, but I believe these sticks may be Willow. They have some minor scars from being hacked down with one of those flail cutters, but those should work into the overall look okay.

As would happen, these arrived in the mail from my old friend the same day. Two Pakistans and one China (my friend is taken by the artsy look).

Since this bark removal process is such a gooey situation, I felt that Little Paky should begin earning keep around here.
20231211_143412-DDS.jpg

The process continues... Is that what they call "green wood"? Surprisingly, Little Paky did a right nice job of skinning on these.

Did I mention that this is a gooey activity? At least my Buck Ranger stayed clean this time.
The odd part of this though, is that neither, Goo Gone, WD-40, nor alcohol will remove this goo. But a simple 3 minute soaking in hot water and Dawn (blue) dissolves it completely. Who knew?

Time to head to the garage with the other two for a few months to dry. I like the look of this one best so far.
Bonus points awarded for how lightweight these are, even in the green stage.

Knives and Nature... they just blend so well.
More to follow at a later date.
