Photos A Walk in Nature

Now we need a quick shot of that stick that followed you home.
Here it is:

It comes up to my shoulder, and I’m about 6’2”.

Ooh! My Buck would love to get at that bark. And it's about the perfect height too. By the way, I don't see a painter on that boat yet. Heh-Heh. I also don't see a Fieldmaster. Ahem... it is getting to be the Christmas (red & green) season after all. Yes, I've been accused of being too critical and demanding at times.

Haha :D:thumbsup: Consider me duly admonished.

The painter attachment point will probably have to wait until spring - I have limited free time, and it gets dark awfully early these days. In the meantime, here is the Fieldmaster:

Sorry about the lousy photo. Again, dark outside…

Not a thing wrong with that image Tom. Good lookin' Fieldmaster, nice pouch too. And is that the same stick you showed in the group of four earlier in this thread? It looks like a darker finish here. I really like what you have done with it. And yes, I do understand about the being busy part. I'm retired and am busier than I ever was when working. I was just funnin' ya about the painter anyway.

Shoe Goo Update:
I must admit I was a bit skeptical about the shoe goo however your are making a believer out me Frank :)

Good to see Green Heron again and at the same time a bit sad the season is over.

Now this is a topic I can get behind. Spent the day today hiking in my local national forest and had a nice picnic
Hiking + a couple of carbon steel traditional knives + delicious picnic = :)

Hi folks :)

Some of you may remember my Stag Grohmann #2 ( tagging Will Power Will Power lol :) )
I love this knife!

Over time I started to notice a green coloration taking hold and spreading/becoming more intense in the stag grooves.
At first I dismissed it. Ray noticed it a bit about a year ago when he came for our Rideau Adventure however I did not think anything of it.

On a recent visit to see the chickadees I was rather shocked to see how ugly it looked now in the pictures.
I deleted some of the pictures were that hideous green was showing way too much and thought I could get away sharing this two below.

This issue was now really bothering me .
I am not sure if it was the appropriate thing to do but I grabbed and old toothbrush, dish soap and warm water and gave it a thorough scrub.
It took a little while but eventually the green stuff came off. You could see it as in little pieces of a "film" type of substance.

It is very clean now :) and it looks A LOT better without the green however it has lost those dark/black accents it had when I first bought it and that I liked. The mark side is a bit "bland" now.
I am not sure I had a choice at this point though.

So I went back to see the chickadees :)
They approved

I think you had some mold on it Dan. Now that you've cleaned it off buff it with a coat of beeswax or your favorite oil finish.
People seem to like BLO but I prefer tung oil - being the Knut that I am.

Your photographs always impress! Of course your models are exquisitely photogenic. :)

Thanks, Dan.

And while we are on the subject of birds, here again is its namesake:

Your chickadee pictures always amaze me. I’d love to have wildlife eating out of my hand, but around here the only things you could train to do that would be grey squirrels, and I know better than to mess with those trouble-makers 🤣

I have never really shared the walkin sticks that I've made so I took some pics today.
Here's a few of they latest walkin sticks that I have worked on.

I got interested in diamond willow several years ago and harvested sticks from all over Montana. Just like all willows they thrive near water. What I really liked is the natural beauty that I could never achieve by my poor carvings. So I just skin the bark and clean up the diamonds and smooth them out before sealing.
A few years ago I took a few Diamond Willows with me to the Oregon knife Show to surprise My Friend waynorth waynorth . At the time his SFO had a Diamond shield and I figured what better than a diamond willow? I hope Charlie comes along and shows us his collection of walking sticks! He has used the Diamond shield on a few of his SFO's!

The 3rd one from the left, with the antler cap, I got several years ago I didn't build that one but it reminded me of how they did them when I was a kid. There's a bunch of work in that stick! Even inlaid a Montana Agate in the top of the shed.

The one with the dog whistle I put in is my regular dog walkin stick! I also put a rubber cane tip for better gription.

The one with the cross-fit handle, (which I cut and positioned!) Dave gave to me at Oregon, and has the most miles on it - used it quite a bit after I had a stroke!!

^^ Nice sticks!! I make sticks as well. Mostly for friends and family and kept 8 for myself.

Thanks!! Yours as well!! There is something magical about walking and hiking sticks; and is such a pleasure to use one!!

I have a fairly big accumulation of them!! As my friends get older, they know where they can find an interesting one!! 😁 Walk 1.jpgWalk 2.jpgWalk 3.jpg
I scored this Narwhal Tusk some time ago, and from time to time, I am tempted to make it into a hiking/walking stick, but I keep waiting for the right inspiration!!!Whale 1.jpgWhale 2.jpg

I see artisans at work in this thread. Those are some beauties waynorth. I only wish I could read what is on the upper stick - last photo.

Wow! You guys are putting me and my meager attempts to shame. All are beauties, but that #5 from the left... I'm a bit partial to the coloration and grain on that one.
That one is black locust (that I stained black). Black locust is a rare find in northern Illinois - this came from downed trees in a former farmstead where the black locusts were planted almost 100 years ago to control erosion. They are now starting to die off.
