Photos A Walk in Nature

All About Birds is my go-to site. I too, was amazed to read about the Red-tailed sound being associated with the Bald Eagle. However, we have a pair of Red-tailed hawks in our neighborhood, and they announce themselves quite vocally at times. It's almost as if they're yelling down at me from above, saying "Hey Frank, we're up here" "Pay attention". I still haven't located their nest though.
Hawks are plentiful around here. Most of the ones I see are red-tails. I generally recognize their call which doesn't sound anything like those Coopers. Bald eagles aren't necessarily common, but sightings aren't unusual either. Thinking about it, I don't know that I've ever heard them make any noise 🤔

Talking about birds and their calls I was reminded of our "quest" with fellow Porchster ( is that a word lol ) Sharp & Fiery Sharp & Fiery to identify a very peculiar bird :)

Coleman texted me with a video he took by the side of the road of this strange bird making some very interesting sounds, calls, and clicking its beak.
The bird was a bit far to clearly make it out in the video however the sounds were like nothing we had heard before.

We were able identify it with help from google and youtube

What a cool experience that was. Thanks for your google-fu, Dan!

When I was growing up, I never saw, or expected to ever see, a Bald Eagle on the Potomac. DDT was banned when I was still young, but the effects of the ban took a while to become apparent. Now I see Bald Eagles maybe once or twice a year, which is not bad when you consider I only ever get out on weekends, and not every weekend.

Well - blame it on the Captain CelloDan CelloDan , he requested updated trail photos of the new trail I'm clearing. :)

Have been at it now for 26 + hours. Some sections take a relatively few minutes (10 or 15) where as other short sections take hours. I still have at least 6 to 8 hours more to go for this one section - about a 25 minute walk in one direction. Lots more milage beyond that on the overall network. Other sections will be cleared later this season - hopefully between snow falls. Have been lucky so far as there is no snow cover but that will change Saturday night.

Anyway - here are a few shots of the WIP. Difficult to appreciate the beauty of this closed woods but it is a very nice section of our local trail network.

The blue/pink tape will all be replaced with proper blazes in the near future.

HERE , A BEFORE AND AFTER - look closely and you can identify the same trees. The one in the foreground just beyond the tape flag is the 3rd tree down on the right of the AFTER photo.

FINALLY one with the knife of the day. Knife blurred a bit in favor of the more clear trail in the distance ~

Wow Ray, you have been busy !!!
Those section are looking great now
Nice that you have the before and after photos to appreciate the work it takes !
Thanks for sharing mi amigo !!! :)

A nice "pocket worn" look on your companion.

I'm on to you, Dan: I know why the viper did not attack the chickadee--it knew the chickadee was just a lifeless toy!
LOL Vince, that's a really good one  😅

It is the Bestança river
Looks like a relaxing place to sit down and unwind José.

Today the ice trails FINALLY opened 😍
YES !!! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::)

I could not wait to log off work this afternoon and head out.
Our oldest daughter is not able able to skate this year due to her knee injury.
I invited our youngest daughter and Diana to come along but had no takers, apparently is "too cold" outside🥶 ☺️

So off I went on my own ... lest I succumb to the dreaded cabin fever

I did the 2.6 km loop three times for an almost 8 km total distance.
On the last loop I fired up my gps tracking app to see how I am doing in 2024 :)

I was SO HAPPY to see significant improvement from last year stats :)
I was finally able to break the 15 km/hr average speed "barrier" and registered 15.1 km/hr.
Last year the best I could do after many attempts was 14.9 km/hr.
My maximum speed went up even more from 18.3 up to 23 km/hr

The source of my new found strength soon become very clear to me. It had been riding in my pocket all along

Went on a Woods Wander yesterday and got the opportunity to give my new but still unfinished wander staff a real workout. The terrain was hilly and often loose. One stretch had been muddy when horses had passed thru and was now all frozen horse prints. A real ankle twister. The staff was indispensable, assisting with balance, moving thorny vines out of the way, testing frozen waters and fending off wild animals. Well, maybe not the wild animal part but it was a solid confidence builder that made the day more pleasurable.

Overall, it was a serene soul refreshing walk in beautiful woods that I am glad are accessible to me.

edit: Ooops, almost forgot knife content. The only cutlery I had with me on this walk was the minimalistic Victorinox Walker and my key-chain Rambler. Neither was called upon and they did not make it out of the pocket or pack. This Walker pic was taken on a previous hike. Both are great knives though.
