Photos A Walk in Nature

Beautiful Dan, we've got winter here for a minute too. The dumper of a few weeks ago has melted away and now we have another 3". Not much to do with it but shovel. Not fun but there you go Brother I get my exercise. Your transformation and self care is very impressive Dan. I am very happy for you and impressed too. You do look marveluuuuuus in your photos. 🥳

Haggis season is soon 😆

I used to work in a tourist shop in Inverness where we'd tell tourists about the wild haggis.
The northern haggis has left legs shorter than the right so they run anti-clockwise around mountains.
The southern haggis has shorter right legs so they run clockwise around the lowland hills 😆
In 2010 we saw a couple of those Wild Haggis on Ben Nevis , but I forget which direction they were going . Beautiful country you have my friend .

Cool knife, what material are the scales made of?

The view is beautiful and your K9 companions sure look to be enjoying themselves 😊

🤣 Ray !
See what you did? Now you have me looking at the Silky Gomboy 240 to bring aboard Serena ⛵

I put it in the wish list at the big river site pending just a bit more research.

There were a couple of times last summer that we made fires on the beach and something like it would have been VERY handy indeed.

For this summer we may go to a big lake in Quebec with lots of islands so we are looking forward to lots more fires 🔥 on the beach 😊

Nice Siren Dan! I have a Sage 17 myself, I trailered it from Florida to Lake Ontario last summer. That’s the nice thing about small boats, you can cozy right in to shore and step off. Beautiful picture!

I've had this old Hawkbill Barlow in my pocket and on the workbench for some time now. It was pretty rusted up when it arrived at my doorstep, but finally cleaned up (all by hand) pretty well. It still has one spot that the secondary blade binds slightly on closing, and I'll work on that some more. It's also not quite sharp yet, but since the river was frozen over and the sun was shining, I figured it was tme to vacate the basement workshop and see what was going on down at Lock & Dam 21. The old Hawkbill stayed snuggled up in my watch pocket on this day though. I had my hands full with camera and lens.

And what riverbank Photo-Walk in Nature would be complete without a Pod of Pelicans?

Fantastic pics!
Isn't this late in the year for pelicans? I thought they'd all be down south by now.

Thanks. The Pelicans always headed out from where I lived before in northern Illinois. But since I moved here a couple of years ago, I see they tend to hang around through the winter. I thought it unusual too.

Yes, I agree  We are holding onto our small little Siren as we enjoy travelling to and exploring different locations.
I had to check the Sage 17 !!! It's a beauty of a boat . I am in 😍...CLassic lines and such a pretty "salty" look ⛵

Ok folks, I kinda lose my mind every time people praise our beloved "Serena" 😍⛵ ... blame this post on D DaleS :D

Our Serena is indeed precious to us.
In 2022 it gave us the strength to carry on while Diana had her long fight with cancer.
We went out on most weekends, many times right after her chemo infusions. We took it easy and treasured our time together out in nature.

In May 2023 her treatments were completed and we took to sailing with renewed energies spending most every weekend of last season adventuring together on our Serena.

On this pic we were at anchor eating our lunch. I had left the rod on the holder with the lure in the water "Just in case" lol 😄. Suddenly the rod bend down and nature provided our next meal

Hi Dan, thanks for the kind words, oddly enough, the Sage 17 has a connection to the knife world. Sal and Gail Glesser, the owners of Spyderco built these boats in Colorado. They were avid Montgomery 17 sailors and decided to, along with Jerry Montgomery, update and improve the boat. The result was Sage Marine. It’s a great boat. I’m happy you and Diana were able to find solace in your Serena during those troubling times. Sailing is a great tonic for stress. Continued good health to you both!
Take care, Dale

Came across some pics from a holiday with the missus a wee while ago in Cyprus. We've only been the once, but would love to go again.

We went out of season, exceedingly bracing to swim in the hotel pool, but the walking was just brilliant as it wasn't too hot - and nicest of all, no other folk around  .!

Knife of choice was was an old 1515.....this was a pic in the hotel room, should've taken one out on the walks stuck in a log somewhere..!

Spectacular scenery, Paul!! Nice choice for the season, also!!
As an aside, what can you tell me about that 1515?? I know nothing about that marking!

- thank you.!

The 1515 is an old classic French knife, originating I believe in Thiers. For me it is typical of the flair and design ingenuity the French knife makers possess, its influence pervades much of France’s pocket knives to this day.

There are still many knives following this design available to buy today, some at eye watering prices but with fit, finish and exotic materials to match.

Interesting bit of history, Paul - do you know when it was made??

- sorry, no idea. Had always hankered after one like this - this came up on my forum in UK second-hand……..snapped it up - that was about 5yrs ago.

Howdy folks :)

We visited our little chickadee friends today ... and recorded it for the "Porch"

Bitter cold day today 🥶.
Last night the temperature went down to about -20 C ( -4 F ). My guess is that it was about - 14 C by the time we got to the bird sanctuary.
I hope you appreciate the frostbite on my bare hands endured for the Porch's sake😄
