The local outdoor club that I belong to was making a trek to the Adirondacks. Friends of mine have went every year for awhile. But, being fairly new to the club, this was my first trip tagging along.
We had 28 members go. Things are kept really open. The guy planning the trip says what hikes he is going on everyday, and you can go along, or not. Some are hard core hikers, some are casual hikers, and some go for drinking and having fun : ). Here is how the trip went for me.
I know some here are locals to this area. So, my trip my seem a bit touristy, but being my first time, I had to see some of the more popular stuff.
We stayed at Adirondack Loj on Heart Lake. You wake up to breakfast in the morning, and write down what sandwiches you want in your trail lunch. By the time you are ready to hit the trails in the morning, you have a paper bag lunch in hand. You get to go out and hike all day, and have dinner waiting for you at the lodge : ) I was staying in the loft, so it not super luxurious, but it was nice to not worry about food. The Loj is a great place, with a great staff, if any are interested.
All my hiking was day hiking. I planned to go a couple days backpacking, but will get to that. In some of the pics you will see folks with trekking poles. I brought mine intended to use them for my multiday pack only, and never did get them out. I prefer my hands free for lighter loads.
I carried a day pack with all the essential stuff. Extra layer, rain gear, food, water, survival kit, etc. Some of the mountain tops were extremely cold, so I had hat and gloves too. I also carried a base layer in case there was an unplanned night out in the bush. This actually almost happened to the group last year, but it is a long story : ) Long way of saying I carried much more than most out there, but better safe than sorry.
The real day there (Sunday) we did a break-in hike on Cascade Mountain. It is a 2.4 mile trek (one-way), with an ascent of 1940 ft, to a total height of 4098 ft. Here are some pics.
This is where we parked, and the mountain is in the background.
